Horace Fredenburgh

Chenango American, September 11, 1856

Drowned, in the canal, in this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 4th inst., Horace [Fredenburgh], aged 8 years, 10 months and 21 days.

When the sun rises in splendor who may tell if the day shall be light, who knoweth the lurking places of the clouds which in a brief hour may obscure the sky?  If the plant bud, who can tell if it shall blossom?  Who can read in the eyes of a child, if he shall thread the dubious pathway of life up to manhood, or if in a few short years a little daisy sown surf shall be all that is left "of the little boy that died!"

To watch for death by the bedside of a sick child, to hold its little hand in yours, to listen to its words, to perform tenderly for it the last sad offices, when expectation of death has partially blinded the pang, is agonizing to a parent's heart, but how much more deplorable the event when unlooked for, unforeseen, when the beloved child, in full health, is suddenly called away, as in the case of our friends who have been called to mourn the loss of their child.

The deceased, though a child, possessed many of the qualities which are common to some of more mature years. General and obliging to his companions, kind and affectionate to his parents, he was a favorite with all.  Little did he think as he repaired to his boat, on the morning which he was drowned, that a ride in it would occasion his death, and so soon!  But such is life, in the midst of which we are in death.

How peaceful, how sweet, and how soothing the thought,

To the stricken and mourning, whose minds are full fraught,

With memories of loved ones, who here could not stay,

That in bright worlds above they're with Jesus always.

Sarah Gurnsey

Chenango American, September 18 & 25, 1856

In the village of Greene [Chenango Co., NY], on the 18th inst., at the residence of her son-in-law, C.A. Stevens, Mrs. Sarah Gurnsey, relict of Samuel Gurnsey of Oxford, deceased, aged 81 years.

She was sustained through a long an exceedingly painful illness, by Christian fortitude  The deceased may be considered one of the pioneers of the Chenango valley, having been a resident for nearly sixty years.  She was born in Saybrook, Conn., July 13, 1775 and removed to Oxford as early as 1797.

In the decease of this estimable lady, noticed in the obituary department of last week, something more would seem to be due than the slight reference therein given.  She had attained to advanced age and was one of the earliest pioneer settler of this valley.  As the writer of this sketch stood by the grave in which her mortal remains were to be deposited, a friend stood near him, whose memory of the deceased ran back through a period of over fifty years.  He spoke warmly of her noble qualities of character, which shone out even to the last of her mortal existence.  Through a very long portion of the closing years of her life, she had been a sufferer through pains and infirmities of body, but her intellect retained its clearness unbroken to the last.  She bore with meekness the chastening hand of God, but longed to depart to her home in Heaven.  Deep was the interest she felt and manifested in her spiritual welfare.  In her case age had not blunted those religious feelings and affections which look to Christ and the hopes that center in his cross.  Many and marked were the changes in social life, as well as in the aspect of the natural world in the progress of cultivation, which she had witnessed. She had seen most of those whom in this early home she had known as neighbors and friends pass away before her.  And the time had come to her, long before her departure, that she had realized the Force of the language of the Psalmist, "though men be so strong that they come to fourscore years, yet is their strength then but labor and sorrow."  Her spirit passed gently away beneath the roof of a kind and devoted daughter where every attention had been bestowed upon her that filial love could suggest.  The hoary head is a crown of glory if it is found in the way of righteousness.

The following is an extract of a letter written by Oscar Phelps, of this town [Greene, NY], now in Alexandria, Va., a member of the 27th Regiment.

Camp Franklin
Alexandria, Nov. 14, 1861

Friend V---, Once more as time (the old conqueror of all things) is passing rapidly away, I take the opportunity of writing a few lines in answer to your kind letter.  I received the books and those other necessaries you sent me, all safe, for which please accept my heartiest thanks and best wishes as a small tribute in return for your remembrance of one who thinks himself unworthy of such kindness; how they make a soldier think of kind ones at home.  I would not forget to mention that A---, gave me a large piece of that butter which I suppose was made by that good mother of yours.  O what should we do if there were none to remember us at home.  Little did I think when I lived at your house, that in so short a time this happy and peaceful country, the pride of nations, would be engaged in civil war, brother against brother, but such truly is now the case.  I think the army a dreadful place, and but to fight for my country and defend it against traitors, I should never have enlisted, as a military life has no charms for me.  I have never been homesick and never wish to return until all is restored to peace. Sometimes I think I would like to be at home for the purpose of attending school, but know very well I could not enjoy myself while the present crisis exists.

Today there has been a grand review of General Franklin's division (of which the 27th forms a part) by Geo. McClellan and staff; it was truly a magnificent sight even to soldiers.  I wish you could have been here and witnessed it.  I guess you would have tho't it quite an army, although there were only twelve regiments of infantry, three batteries of artillery and one regiment of cavalry. We got through in time to return in the rain.

My health is good and so is Albert's; I should be very lonesome at times were it not for him, as he is my best friend.  I think he aspires to a military life and advances daily in the estimation of his superior officers.

We may have no fires in our tents except we buy stoves or build fireplaces; my tent mates and I have built a fireplace in our tent so we are quite comfortable.

We may boast of hardships endured, of heroic deeds but there is a powerful incentive coming from those Northern homes that cheers us on to victory, when the sky is o'ercast with dark clouds, and the driving storm compels us to stay within our tents, what is it that clears away the gloom and makes everything cheerful?  It is the thoughts of home as well as that we are on the side of right.

We got our pay the 13th which of course was very acceptable.  Our Government pays clothes and feeds us well; in fact it is the best Government on the face of the globe, and he who would not stand up for its rights, is a traitor, and does not deserve the name of an American.

Write again, letters are our best society.  My love and best wishes to all lovers of the union.

Ray Lyon

Afton Enterprise, June 7, 1928

North Afton [Chenango Co., NY]:  This community was deeply saddened to earn of the death of Ray Lyon at the home of his mother, Mrs. H.D. Lyon on Monday evening of this week.  Ray was a former student of the Afton High School.  He tried several times to enlist in the army but was not accepted as he had a very weak heart. Ray had been working in Binghamton for some time.  The deep sympathy of the entire community goes out to Mrs. Lyon and family.  He is survived by his mother, a brother, Earl, of Cortland, a sister, Miss Blanche, a teacher in a Long Island school.

Gertrude (Bush) Miner

Norwich Sun, Jan. 4, 1910

Guilford [Chenango Co., NY]:  Mrs. Frank Miner after months of suffering passed away at her home at West Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] Monday night.  The funeral was attended from the home Thursday and the body was brought here for burial in the Guilford cemetery. The most of her married life had been spent here, where she had many friends.  Of her immediate family the husband and one daughter Bessie, survive her, also her mother, Mrs. Richard Bush besides a brother and sisters.

Lila Aldrich

Chenango Telegraph, Nov. 6, 1942

Mrs. Lila Aldrich, aged 71, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 4 at the Maple Park Home, Vernon Center [Oneida Co., NY], after a long illness.  She is survived by her husband, Lester Aldrich, one daughter, Mrs. Robert Patton of Oneonta, two sons, William Aldrich of Seneca Falls, Marshal Aldrich of Washington, D.C. and one brother, Jesses Norton of Norwich. The funeral will be held at The Maple Park Home at 1 p.m. Friday with burial in the White Store cemetery [Chenango Co., NY].

Nellie Miller

Died February 7, 1941, Guilford, NY

The funeral of Mrs. Nellie Miller wife of Fred Miller who died at the family home on Shumway Hill on Feb. 7th, was held from the late home last Monday afternoon, with burial at Mt. Upton [Chenango Co., NY].  Besides her husband, Mrs. Miller is survived by three sons, Arthur of Richfield Springs, and Harold and Robert of Mt. Upton, two grandsons, a brother, Charles Greene, of Guilford, and a sister, Mrs. Ward Pearsall of Mt. Upton.

Mary E. (Hill) Folts

Died March 24, 1939, Morris, NY

Mrs. Mary E. Folts, widow of William Folts, died at her home in Morris [Otsego Co., NY] at 4 o'clock Friday morning of cerebral hemorrhage. She had been in failing health for the past few months.  Mrs. Folts was born in the town of New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], Nov. 9, 1877, a daughter of the late Louis B. and Mary Babcock Hill. Surviving is one daughter, Mary, who has resided with her mother since the death of Mr. Folts several years ago. The funeral services were held at the residence on Monday at 1 o'clock with burial at New Berlin.

Nellie E. Morrell

Died April 12, 1941, South New Berlin, NY

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Mrs. Nellie E. Morrell, wife of Postmaster Harold Morrell of South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], died at the family home in that village Saturday night at 10 o'clock.  Mrs. Morrell had been in poor health for the last two years. She was born June 3, 1874, in the town of New Berlin.  For the last 30 years she had been a resident of South New Berlin and was prominent in community life.  She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and a former member of the Methodist church.  Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Ralph Morrell of Wolcott, Alson of South New Berlin and Earl of Sepauket, L.I.; three daughters, Mrs. Rexford Davis of Theresa, Mrs. Clifford Davis of Mt. Upton and Mrs. Lewis Perkins of New Berlin; three granddaughters;  three brothers, William and Warren Dyer of this city, and Arthur of Philadelphia, and two sisters, Mrs. Henry K. Mandeville and Mrs. Arthur S. Hemingway, both of this city.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist Church at South New Berlin.  The pastor, the Rev. C.H. Skinner, will officiate. Burial will be in South New Berlin.

May (Brennan) Mulligan

Died May 24, 1938, Norwich, NY

Funeral services for Mrs. May B. Mulligan, wife of Joseph P. Mulligan, will be held Friday morning at 9 o'clock from the family residence at 62 Rexford street [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] and at 9:30 from St. Paul's church.  Rev. Father Charles M. Coveney, pastor of St. Paul's, will officiate. Burial will be made in the family plot at St. Paul's cemetery [Norwich].  Mrs. Mulligan died Tuesday afternoon at the Chenango Memorial Hospital.  She was born in Hamilton [Madison Co., NY], March 11, 1886, the daughter of Thomas D., and the late Margaret Carroll Brennan.  For 50 years she had resided in Norwich. Educated in the Norwich schools she was graduated from the Norwich high school in the class of 1905 and the teachers' training class. For several years Mrs. Mulligan followed the teaching profession.  She was united in marriage with Joseph P. Mulligan December 28, 1909.  Mrs. Mulligan was esteemed as a woman of high Christian character.  She was a devoted mother and a neighbor who never failed in aiding those in need. Giving freely of her ability and energy Mrs. Mulligan served as a president of the Norwich Parent-Teacher Association. She was a member of the L.C.B.A., the League of the Sacred Heart and the Rosary Society of St. Paul's church. Besides a host of friends, there survive her husband and four children, Margaret M., of Sherburne; Mary A. of Oneonta; John J., a student of St. Michael's college at Toronto, Canada, and Eleanor T. of Norwich, also her father, Thomas D. Brennan of this city.

Phebe E. (Gager)  Morse

Died July 18, 1927

Monday evening, July 18, 1927, just as the sun was going down at the close of a beautiful day, mother fell asleep, surrounded by her loved ones.  Phebe Gager was born in the town of Gilbertsville [Otsego Co., NY], June 1854.  She was the oldest daughter of Gilbert and Elizabeth Gager.  While a child they moved to South New Berlin, where she lived until her marriage to Allan L. Morse, when they moved to Holmesville where they spent all their married life.  Unto them was born one daughter, Hattie, wife of Charles Annis.  Since the death of her husband she has lived with her daughter, who was very dear to her, and where she has been tenderly cared for in her last illness.  Always cheerful and patient, although gradually failing in health for a long time, she was not considered seriously ill until the past few weeks when in spite of all that loving hands and medical aid could do, she grew worse until the end. She will be sadly missed in the home she has left (that of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Annis, of New Hartford, N.Y.)  she leaves to mourn her passing, the daughter above mentioned, one granddaughter, Mrs. Paul Chandler, one great grandson Kenneth Chandler; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Mills, of Rockdale, Mrs. George Moran, of Sidney, Mrs. Chester Stratton, of Utica.  Her funeral was held at the church in Holmesville, Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock.  

Sleep, thee loved one, crowned with flowers, in the grave we made for thee,

Sing, sweet spirit, with the angels, floating o'er the crystal sea;

When our tears have ceased their flowing, and our hearts no longer beat,

We will meet and love forever at the blessed Saviour's feet.

Head Quarters People's Ellsworth

Regiment, Albany, N.Y. Oct. 4, 1861

We have a Colonel now, S.W. Stryker, who has acted as our Major since the organization of the Regiment, has been appointed our Colonel.  No appointment could have been made so satisfactory to the whole Regiment as this.  He is a competent officer and is worthy of his position.  If you had witnessed the enthusiasm prevalent at his reception you would have needed no other assurance of his popularity.  Our Lieut. Colonel is J.C. Rice, formerly Adjutant of the Garibaldi Guards.  Our Major is James McGowan, a man of experience and ability who was tested in the Mexican war.  our Adjutant, Knox, is the personification of activity.  He is the smallest, but not least officer of the staff.  He is every mon a military man.  The chaplain of the regiment is not yet appointed. The applicants for it are numerous.  Our staff officers so far, are men of merit, and no regiment has entered the field with superior commanders to those of the People's Ellsworth, the 44th.  As to Captain of Co. D, we wouldn't exchange him for any officer whoever he might be.  Nothing excites him; he is always calm and unmoved--a man of fine feelings but endowed with remarkable control over them.

The barracks are often set on the quivive by rumors of our departure and destination.  We have been receiving our fatigue dress and been going "next week" for a month,--sometime to Virginia and sometimes to Missouri.  This morning we are destined to Missouri, and are to start next Wednesday.  Tomorrow we shall be bound southward and leave in 20 days.  Thus it is--every one has his opinion of our future movements and after fostering it awhile it becomes a fixed fact and from idle gossip, rumors are not almost as unremarkable as the wind.

Albert R. Mundy

Died February 22, 1934, Smyrna, NY

Albert R. Mundy of Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], 61, former resident of the town of Norwich, died at his home in Smyrna Thursday noon.  He resided on Tanner Hill until about three years ago when he sold his property there and moved to Smyrna.  Mr. Mundy had been a victim of heart attacks and Wednesday night was again stricken.  He did not survive the attack and passed away about noon Thursday. There survive his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Rowland Hamm. Funeral services are to be held in Smyrna at 12:30 Sunday noon.  Rev. Mr. Sullivan officiating, and the body will be brought to this city for funeral services at the Breese funeral home at 2:30, Rev. Jas. K. Romeyn officiating with burial in Mt. Hope.

Mary J. Mundy

Died February 12, 1938, North Norwich, NY

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  The funeral of Mrs. Mary J. Mundy, wife of Eugene Mundy, who died at her home in North Norwich yesterday morning after a protracted illness, will be held from the Breese Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. James K. Romeyn officiating.  Burial will be in the North Norwich Cemetery.  Born in North Norwich, May 20, 1875, the deceased was a member of the North Norwich Grange and the First Baptist church of Norwich.  Besides the husband, she is survived by two sons, Harry of Norwich and Howard of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters, Mrs. M.E. Sholes and Mrs. Ira T. Stradling, both of North Norwich, and Mrs. Whitman S. Wick of Middletown, and two brothers, Charles and Lynn Case, both of North Norwich.

Harry Mundy

Died November 26, 1941, Norwich, NY

Harry Mundy of 56 Plymouth street [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] died at his home Wednesday evening about 8 o'clock after an illness of about two weeks because of a heart ailment.  Mr. Mundy was born in Norwich, June 19, 1896, and for many years conducted a barber shop in this city.  There survive his wife; one son, Richard, of Norwich; a daughter, Mrs. Cleo Weston, of Syracuse; his father, Eugene Mundy, of North Norwich, and a brother, Howard, of Detroit.  He also leaves a grandson, Richard Mundy, Jr., and a step-daughter, Marion Mundy, of Norwich. Services are to be held at the Breese Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon with burial in the North Norwich cemetery.

Eva M. Mundy

Died February 1, 1944, Norwich, NY

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Funeral services for Mrs. Eva M. Mundy of this city whose death occurred suddenly Tuesday night after an illness of only a few hours, will be held from the William Breese Funeral Home here at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. R.L. Matthews, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church is to officiate.  Employed as a winder at the plant of the J.C. Welwood Corporation, Mrs. Mundy was taken ill about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dr. Leslie T. Kinney was summoned and he directed that she be removed to the Chenango Memorial Hospital where she died three hours later.  Born in Norwich, April 5, 1896.  Mrs. Mundy was a sister of the late Mrs. Linn A. Skinner, who succumbed suddenly to a heart attack Jan. 11.  Mrs. Mundy is survived by her husband, one daughter, Miss Arlene Mundy of Columbus, Ga; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Figary, and three sisters and two brothers, Otto Nicholson of Oxford, Mrs. Arnold Gibbons of Norwich, Mrs. Raymond Salisbury, Clarence and Clyde Figary, all of this city.

Agnes Murphy

Died April 24, 1941, Norwich, NY

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Miss Agnes Murphy, 57, of 61 Rexford Street, Norwich, died at the Chenango Memorial Hospital last night about midnight.  Born in McDonough [Chenango Co., NY] the deceased had been a resident of Norwich for the past 35 years. She was a member of the Rosary and Altar Societies of St. Paul's Church, the auxiliary to the A.O.H. and the League of the Sacred Heart.  She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Ella Keeley and Mrs. Sarah Wood of Norwich and Mrs. Harry Sanford of Arcade, also two brothers, Andrew W. and Matthew D. Murphy, both of Norwich. The funeral will be held from the family residence on Rexford Street Monday morning at 9 o'clock and from St. Paul's at 9:30 with burial in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Oxford [Chenango Co., NY].

George W. Burkett

Died April 24, 1941, McDonough, NY

George W. Burkett, 80, who lived alone near the McDonough [Chenango Co., NY] CCC camp, was found dead in bed at his home Saturday noon by Claude Stiles, Oxford rural mail carrier. Stiles had not seen the aged man for two days.  He was alarmed because of this, made an investigation, finding Burkett expired.  Undertaker Fred W. Seymour of Oxford accompanied by --G. Boname coroner, and Dr. Hall of Oxford went to the Burkett home Saturday afternoon and the body was brought to the Seymour Funeral Home, where services are to be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, daylight time, burial in McDonough.  Coroner Boname gave as the cause of death the infirmities of old age coupled with a heart condition. The deceased leaves several brothers and sisters none of whom reside in this vicinity.

Edward Murphy

Died March 22, 1940, Norwich, NY

Edward Murphy of 61 Rexford street passed away at the Chenango Memorial Hospital at 9:50 Wednesday night aged 68 years.  The deceased was born in McDonough [Chenango Co., NY], August 6, 1871, but had been a resident of Norwich for about 35 years.  For many years Mr. Murphy was a valued employee of the O.&W. shops and for a period of 18 years he was employed as a machinist at the Borden plant in this city. For the past nine years he had been engaged with his brother, Andrew, in farming in East Norwich.  He was well liked by all who knew him and general regret will be expressed at his death. There survive two brothers, Andrew W. and Mathew D., both of Norwich; four sisters, Mrs. Ella Keeley, Mrs. Sarah Wood, Mrs. Harry Sanford and Miss Agnes Murphy of Norwich. The body was removed to the late home on Rexford street Thursday afternoon where friends may call after 6 p.m.  Prayer services will be held at the late home at 9:30 Saturday morning and a service of absolution will take place in the vestibule of St. Paul's church at 10 o'clock Saturday morning.  Committal services will take place in Mt. Hope chapel, and burial will be made in Oxford [Chenango Co., NY] in the spring. A high mass of requiem will be held at St. Paul's church at 9 o'clock Monday morning. Friends are requested to meet at the late home at 8:30 Friday night to recite the rosary.

Joseph G. Murphy

Died September 15, 1938, Norwich, NY 

Following an extended illness the death of Joseph G. Murphy, World War veteran, occurred Friday morning at his home, 63 Rexford street [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY].  Born in this city May 27, 1890, the son of Edward and Mary O'Donnell Murphy, he had spent practically his entire life here. Educated in the Norwich schools, Mr. Murphy later lived for a few years in Utica and Frankfort.  Widely known in his native city, his death is a source of regret to many friends. By trade he was a plumber and steamfitter and for 25 years was associated in that capacity with the Charles G. Nash plumbing store.  Mr. Murphy served his country in the World War in the naval aviation branch of the service.  He was a member of St. Paul's church and the Holy Name Society of that church. Besides his wife, Nellie Finster Murphy, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Murphy and three sisters, Miss Catherine Murphy and Mrs. E.J. Thomas of this city and Mrs. F.E. Boyce of Manchester, New Hampshire.  Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from the George J. Devine Funeral Home and at 9:30 from St. Paul's church where the pastor, Rev. Father Charles M. Coveney will officiate. Burial will be made in the family plot at St. Paul's cemetery [Norwich, NY].

Mary O'Donnell Murphy

Died April 1, 1943, Norwich, NY

Mrs. Mary O'Donnell Murphy, 82, died suddenly about 11:30 Saturday morning at her home, 65 Rexford street [Norwich, Chenango Co NY].  In ill health for a long time she had shown improvement of late. The end came suddenly and is a shock to the members of her family and a wide circle of friends.  Mrs. Murphy was born Dec. 13, 1860 on Guernsey street in this city, the daughter of Kathryn Marlarkey O'Donnell and Martin O'Donnell. She was untied in marriage in January, 1884, to Edward Murphy, who died in 1903.  The deceased had been almost a life long resident of Norwich with the exception of nine years in Preston. She had been a resident of Rexford street for the past 45 years.  Mrs. Murphy was a member of St. Paul's church, the Rosary Society and the League of Sacred Heart of that church. She was devoted to church and family, and her kindly and neighborly nature endeared her to many friends who will regret her passing.  Her fine sense of humor together with conversation ability earned her the friendship of many who will long remember her for her many fine qualities of womanhood.  There survive three daughters, Mrs. E.J. Thomas and Miss Kathryn Murphy of this city and Mrs. F.E. Boyce of Manchester, N.H.  She also leaves a sister, Miss Ella O'Donnell of Binghamton, two grandsons, one granddaughter and several nephews and nieces  Services are to be held at the Robert J. Fahy Funeral home on North Broad street at 9:10 Tuesday morning and at 9:30 in St. Paul's church, where a high mass of requiem will be celebrated.  Burial will be in St. Paul's cemetery [Norwich, NY].
