Oxford Times, March 24, 1858

Frozen to Death:  A man named Hazard Smith was frozen to death on Friday night, the 5th, near East Worcester, Otsego County [NY].  He left East Worcester, about 11 o'clock at night with his sleigh and horses for his home on South hill, rather the worse for liquor. About a mile from the village his team left the road and wandered into some bushes and stopped.  He was not found until Saturday night, and then some 20 rods from the team, had his coat, vest and boots off, and laid on his back on the snow with his hands folded across his breast.  He was about 70 years of age.

Chenango American, Greene, NY, February 11, 1858

We learn, say the Chenango Union, that an exciting case has recently occurred in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], of which the facts are substantially as follows:  The wife of a Mr. Andrews, who last spring moved into that town from Delaware co., recently died, and Andrews very shortly after sold off his things and left. There were some circumstances, which, in the opinion of the people, required an examination, and last week a Coroner's Jury was summoned by Coroner Curtis, and the body exhumed and a post mortem examination had, by which it appeared that Mrs. Andrews must have died in consequence of ergot having been administered to her, as alleged by her husband, to produce abortion.  This we believe, was the substance of the verdict. An effort will undoubtedly be made to procure the arrest of Andrews.  

Found Dead:  Roswell Lawton, who resided in the south-east part of this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], attended a chopping bee at Mr. Wilson's on Friday last, and towards night started for home, 1-1/2 miles distant, across lots.  Not reaching home as he should, the neighborhood instituted a search on Sunday morning, which was continued until Monday forenoon, when he was found in the field, dead, his body frozen perfectly stiff.

Death of Kelley:  The Chenango Union, says Kelly, the Irishman convicted for the killing of his brother, in Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], died in the State Prison at Auburn a few weeks since.  He was sentenced for five years. This event was not unexpected, as his health was in wretched condition nearly the whole time he was confined in our county Jail.

Recollections of the Early Settlement of the town of Greene

Part 2

Capt. Joseph Juliand, to whom reference has already been made, was born in the city of Lyons, in the then kingdom of France, January 17, 1749, and in early life received a good academical education.  His father intended that he should devote himself to the medical profession and he pursued his studies so far as to acquire a very good general knowledge of the science, which in after life was turned to good account as the commander of a vessel's crew, as well as a pioneer in a new country; both of which positions he was destined to occupy. Being a man of great energy of character, bold and adventurous, he abandoned the study of medicine and adopted a maritime life at an early age.  He passed through all the subordinate grades usual in that profession until he attained the rank of a commander of a vessel in the mercantile marine of France.  In this capacity he made several voyages across the Atlantic, principally between the ports of Nantes and Bordeaux in France and Boston and Philadelphia in the United States.  While spending some time in this country, on the occasion of his periodical visits he traveled in the interior, mingling freely with the people.  He lost no opportunity to learn the language as well as the manners and customs of the country.  It was on one of these occasions while spending some time in the vicinity of New Haven, Ct., that he made the acquaintance of Hannah Lindsley, the daughter of a respectable farmer, who afterwards became his wife.  It is probable that this circumstance had a great influence in changing all his future plans of life  After closing his commercial operations, he abandoned the sea and determined to adopt this country as his future home. This determination might have been accelerated by the political troubles which were then beginning to agitate France, and which afterwards deluged that fair country with the blood of its own citizens.  His native city of Lyons became one of the most conspicuous and sanguinary theaters for the enactment of the bloody drama of the Revolution.  He was married in 1788, and soon after removed to a farm near Greenfield, in Massachusetts, where he resided several years.  Having heard of the establishment of a French colony here, and having been solicited to come, he made his arrangements to join it.

After disposing of his property  he set out on his journey with his small family then consisting of a wife and two children.  He penetrated the then unbroken wilderness in the expectation of finding a new home and congenial society.  Leaving his family in that part of the town which is now included in the town of Coventry until he could provide a dwelling and make permanent arrangement here, he visited the settlement.  But what was his surprise to find it broken up; several families having already left and others preparing to follow.  Nothing daunted by this discouraging circumstance, he purchased the very land, including the town plot which had just been abandoned by his disheartened countrymen, and thenceforth made it his residence during his whole future life.  It was in 1798 that he assumed the possession of this property.  Here he reared a family of five sons and one daughter all of whom are now living [in 1857] and reside in this vicinity, and are heads of families and occupy respectable positions in society. After living many years to enjoy the fruits of his enterprise and to witness the improvement and prosperity of the country, he died on the 13th of Oct. 1821, in the 78th year of his age.  Capt. Juliand was a man of medium status, rather inclined to fullness.  He possessed  a remarkable degree of energy and vivacity, blended with wit, intelligence and politeness of manners, all of which are so characteristic of the nation and country of which he was a native.  It was these traits of character which enabled him to conform to the circumstances in which he was placed, and to enjoy the greatest amount of happiness of which his condition was susceptible.  He was ever the sympathizing friend of the poor and oppressed, and nothing would excite his indignation sooner than the exhibition of a spirit of intolerance and oppression.

Death of William H. Hamilton:  A telegram received here on Saturday last announced the death of William H. Hamilton.  We have no information in regard to the details of this sad event.  Letters from Nebraska lately received by friends, spoke in flattering terms of the health and prospects of Mr. Hamilton.  The electric shock that announced his death came like a flash of lightning from the clear sky.  In the fall of 1856, Mr. Hamilton left us in the flush of health to join his brother, who had preceded him in Nebraska, lured by the golden vision with which the horizon of the West, so often like an "ignis fatuus," attracts youthful ambition, and enterprise to an untimely end.  Many will call to mind the narrow escape from the burning "Niagara," by which Mr. Hamilton was rescued from a watery grave, on his outward journey, and his gallant and manly bearing in that trying scene.  Strange to us seems the solemn dispensation, which permitted him to escape unharmed the fire and water, to die in the country of his adoption.  Mr. Hamilton, a short time before his death, had gone to Brownville in Nebraska, and was in a Land Office at that place, having previously been at Omaha City  He was for some time in trade with his brother here, and acquired many friends.  He leaves a mother in Smithville [Chenango Co., NY], where his remains will be brought today, who in her sad bereavement will have the sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances, who lament with her the loss of one gifted with much that was generous and manly.

 Recollections of the Early Settlement of the Town of Greene

Part 1

This town [Greene, NY] was originally organized on the 9th of March, 1798, as a part of the County of Tioga.  It was taken from the towns of Union and Jericho (now Bainbridge).  It originally embraced the present towns of Coventry and Smithville, the former of which was organized by the Legislature in 1806, the latter in 1808.  The town was named in honor of General Nathaniel Greene, of Revolutionary fame.  It is situated in the southern extremity of Chenango County, twenty-two miles from Norwich and eighteen from Binghamton.

The Chenango River passes through the centre of the town, running about thirteen miles within its limits.  The Genegantslet, a mill stream of considerable size, takes its rise in the northern part of the County passes through the western part of the town, forming a junction with the Chenango a few miles below the village of Greene. The signification of its name in the Indian dialect is not known.  The name of the river is said by some to signify "Pleasant Stream," by others "Big Neck;" which is correct it is difficult now to determine.

The first settlement of this town was made about the year 1792.  The first families were dispersed over the then surface of the town nearly simultaneously, and did not radiate from any particular point.

Greene was early signalized as the seat of a settlement of French refugees who fled from their own country to escape the terrors of the Revolution.  It is supposed that they arrived in Philadelphia in the year 1791.  One of their number Charles Felix De Bulogne, had preceded the main body of the emigrants and had negotiated for, and concluded the purchase of a tract of land granted by letters patent from the people of the State of New York to Malacoy Treat and William W. Morris, lying on the east side of the Chenango River in said town, containing about 15,000 acres, upon which he paid a very considerable amount, taking a deed and executing a mortgage upon the land for the balance of the purchase money.  It was through his influence that the French settlers were induced to come out and form the settlement.  The first detachment of these adventurers came on from Philadelphia, in the fall of 1792.  This party consisted of M. Bulogne, M. Shamont, M. Le Fevre, M. Bravo, M. Du Vernet and M. Obre. A portion of them had families and there were some young ladies among the party. The route taken by them was through New York, Albany, Schenectady, and thence up the Mohawk to Fort Plain, where leaving the valley they passed over to the town of Butternuts, in Otsego County; here they were joined by Simon Barnet, who had formerly resided in Philadelphia.

It is not certainly known how they were enabled to penetrate the then unbroke wilderness, but the fact is undeniable that they arrived at their destination and commenced operations on the east bank of the Chenango River, by laying out a town plot, each lot containing ten acres, and the whole plot embracing about three hundred acres of land, facing the west by a gently decent. The plans of operation in carrying on their agricultural pursuits were the same adopted in many parts of their native country, where the agriculturist with his family resides in the village and owns and works a farm, more or less remote from his residence; with this view each was to select his farm on other portions of the tract, thus combining social intercourse and good society with rural pursuits. These settlers were for the most part gentlemen and ladies of education, refinement ad polished manners. It is said that the leader of this band was a titled nobleman in France. Subsequently M. Dutremont, joined the colony with his family and before its entire dispersion, Capt. Joseph Juliand, was attracted thither; who being strictly the only French emigrant who attained a permanent residence in the town, will hereafter claim a further notice. These adventurers erected rude dwellings from the materials within their reach, and commenced improving their lands by removing the timber, and grubbing out the roots, each putting a small patch of land in complete cultivation, while their supplies of provisions were drawn from great distances at much labor and expense.  under these circumstances it is not strange that persons reared in affluence and accustomed to the pleasures of refined society should yield to the pressure of the misfortunes that soon overtook them.

M. Bulogne, while on his way to Philadelphia in the spring of 1785, was unfortunately drowned while fording a creek much swollen by the spring floods.  On arriving at the stream which is a tributary of the west branch of the Susquehanna, in the State of Pennsylvania, enquiry was made at the nearest house in regard to the safety of the ford, but in consequence of the illness of the master of the house he could do no more than to point out the route to be taken. M. Bologne directed his servant to take the best horse and pass over, which he did in safety, the water only reaching the horse's sides.  M.B. then attempted to follow with the horse of his servant, but on reaching the middle of the stream, the horse stopped and became restive and on applying the spurs he reared and lunged and threw his rider, whose foot became entangled in the stirrup, and without the power of extricating himself he was drowned.  Before the horse reached the shore the foot was freed and the body carried down the swollen stream.  He might have been saved had assistance been at hand.  The servant could render none, but standing on the bank in the agony of despair, exclaimed Mon Dieu! Mon Dieu!

The untimely death of the leader of this adventurous band proved fatal to the future success of the settlement. The failure to pay the balance of the purchase money due on the tract, caused the title to revert to the original patentees, and hence no valid title could be obtained through him.  After all the hardships and privations they had endured, the failure to secure a title to their land, proved a signal for dispersing the settlement.  The majority of these settlers left in the year 1796.  They removed by water, in such canoes or boats as could be obtained for that purpose, descending the river to its junction with the Susquehanna and thence down the latter river to a point on its western bank in Bradford County, Pa., where they again commenced a settlement which they namef Asylum, but it has since been known as French Town.  It is believed that some of their descendants still reside in that vicinity. The widow of M. Bulogne and some others returned to France.  In the year 1794, the celebrated French diplomatist, Talleyrand, whose name stands conspicuous in European history, while sojourning in the United States visited his fellow countrymen at their settlement in Greene.  He came on from Philadelphia on horseback, accompanied by a traveling companion and servant, and after remaining here a few days, pursued his journey to Albany.  Having made the acquaintance of M. Dutremont and family, he became much interest in his eldest son, and on leaving he persuaded the young man with the consent of his parents to accompany him to France.  Young Dutremont afterwards became his private Secretary, and may have received other preferment through the influence of his patron.

Death of Rev. B. McCabe:  Father McCabe, a well known Catholic priest, and late of Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], was burned to death at Malone, N.Y. [Franklin Co.], while lying in his bed, on the 24th ult., owing to the clothes which covered him taking fire.  The fire was confined to the bedroom, and nothing was known of the lamentable affair until next morning when his body was discovered by another priest, who had slept in an adjoining room.

Died:  In this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], on the morning of the 25th inst., Mary [Bacon], wife of Cyrus A. Baron, Esq., in the 65th year of her age.  Mrs. Bacon was one of the very few left to us of the early inhabitants of our village.  Possessed of a cheerful, serene and happy disposition, she was the mainspring of family joy and happiness, and respected and beloved by all with whom she associated. During a long severe and very painful illness, she preserved her usual, equanimity of temper and disposition, and even when exercised with pain amounting almost to torture, she remained calm, mindful of the happiness of those around her, encountered her heavy affliction with cheerfulness and resignation and went to her rest mourned and lamented by all, with however the comforting dispense left to them, that their loss was her great gain.
