___________________________________________

On Wednesday morning, 2d inst. at 3 o'clock, Mr. Archibald Dixon late a resident of this city, formerly of Vicksburg, Miss.

The above brief note which we find in the Picayune of the 4th, records the death of one of "the salt of the earth" - as estimable a man as ever went to the grave.  Mr. Dixon was well known to most of our citizens, and by those who best knew him most beloved.  He was a printer not to be excelled in skill or industry, and was long engaged in the Sentinel office, where he enjoyed the respect and esteem of all connected in it with him, from the time of Dr. Hogan until a few months ago when in declining health he left us to visit his relatives at his native place, Gilbertsville, New York [Otsego Co.].  He was one of the printers enlisted in the First Mississippi Regiment with which he served until forced by disease to return.  Long after his arrival here last winter [unreadable] resume his profession, which he continued with us, until convinced that a change of life was absolutely necessary, and he determined to revisit his native home.  He set out, unfortunately, just in time to be arrested in New Orleans by the Yellow Fever.  He suffered a severe attack, from which we suspect he never recovered, and has now gone to his final rest after lingering in sickness through the summer.

He was a member of the Masonic fraternity of our city, and of the Mechanics' Mutual Benefit Society, and we feel convinced that they will both pay a suitable tribute to the memory of one who was so bright an ornament to their orders.

Poor Dick! We fear he fell asleep in neglect among strangers, but if there is a better world for the noble, the generous, the humane and good, he has awoke to a reward in heaven.  Vicksburg (Miss) Sentinel, Nov. 9

The deceased was formerly a resident of this village [Cooperstown, Otsego Co. nY] and received his first instructions in the art of printing in the office of the Freeman's Journal.

News Item

Last week we published an item stating that Frederick Barrows of McDonough [Chenango Co. NY] who jumped or was thrown from a wagon at the corner of West Main and Court Streets in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY], on Saturday evening, June 20th - he having started for his home after Barnum's show - had sustained injuries which resulted in his death at his home and that he was buried on Tuesday of last week. This we published in good faith, the report of his death being generally credited, but since we have learned that he is still on earth and attended a dance in his native town on the evening of the fourth, we take it all back, and offer our apologies for burying him too soon, with the hope that he may "live long and prosper."

Death

Another of our old and most respected Citizens has gone down to the grave.  William McLean, Esquire, after a long and lingering illness which he bore with fortitude and Christian resignation, died last Sunday morning in this village in the seventy-fourth year of his age.  He was formerly a Citizen of Oneida County [NY] and printed and edited the first newspaper which was published in that county.  The first number of this paper made its appearance, we believe, about the year 1795.  It was called The Whitestown Gazette and Cato's Patrol.  How wonderful that the man who printed the first newspaper published in the great, rich, and populous County of Oneida, was buried yesterday!  In 1818 he came to this village and commenced printing The Cherry Valley Gazette which he continued until the year 1831, when the management of it was transferred to his son, Charles McLean, Esq. the present Clerk of this County. When Gen. Harrison was elected President in 1840, he was appointed Postmaster of this village [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. NY], which office he held for four years.  About eighteen years ago, he was elected Town Clerk of Cherry Valley and was notwithstanding all the changes and fierce collisions of parties, unanimously re-elected by his neighbors and townsmen, until the last Town Meeting, when the state of his health did not permit him to be a candidate.  He was literally a working man, and was, when he commenced his career in life, a Federalist of the Washington School.  He never changed his principles.  It is remarkable that though during the most bitter political controversies he conducted for many years a party newspaper, he has not left behind him a single personal enemy.

"A Wit's a feather, and a Chief's a rod, / An honest man's the noblest work of God."

Nicholas Van Rensselaer a venerable soldier of the Revolution, expired in this city [Albany, Albany Co. NY] on Wednesday, in the 94th year of his age.  Col. Van Rensselaer was with Montgomery at the storming of Quebec, was at Ticonderoga, Fort miller, Fort Ann, and at Bemis' Heights, in two engagements at the latter, and was deputed to convey the intelligence of the surrender of Burgoyne to Albany.  What events did he not live to witness in the course of his nearly centennial existence!  What progress in the history of the great country the liberties of which he fought to establish!  Albany Argus.

A Murderer of Over Seventeen Years Ago Identified

In December, 1865, in the town of Brookfield, Madison County [NY], about one mile north of West Edmeston [Otsego Co. NY], was committed a most dastardly murder.  Dennison Crandall and wife, an aged couple had in their possession a large sum of money.  This fact being known, a vile-looking gang of men entered Mr. Crandall's premises for the purpose of robbery.  In the melee which ensued, the robbers succeeded in their designs, only on a more bloody scale.  Mr. and Mrs. Crandall were shot at and beaten in a horrible manner, and finally left for dead.  Mr. Crandall rallied, and after hours of unconsciousness, only to find his wife dead. The news of this tragedy spread.  Search for the guilty ones proved of no avail, and not even the incentive of the reward of a $1,000 caused their arrest.  About that time there was a man named Isaiah Belville staying with the Loomises, but after the murder he was missing.  Recently Grove Loomis died, and this Belville returned to claim by foul means the property which he had left. For that he was arrested and confined in Rome jail.  During the past week, Mr. Crandall and his son went to Rome, sought an interview in the jail with this Belville and identified him as the man who committed the murder, and for which a warrant had been issued for his arrest.  Returning after an absence of twelve years, he went by the name of George Belville, as he did when arrested on the charge of perjury.  Since his confinement in the jail, he has written two letters, both of which he signed his name "Isaiah."  Of course, he denies the charge of murder and protests his innocence of all other charges. The fact that the warrant for his arrest in 1865 bears the name of "Isaiah," and the positive identification by Mr. Crandall and the letters which he has written prove almost conclusively that he is the man who committed that murder, as stated above.

In this case, a mortal in the ordinary walks of life, has passed from time into eternity, an event of every day's occurrence.  But we cannot reconcile it to our feelings, merely to announce the event, without publicly joining in the universal expression of sorrow which it has occasioned.  Her loss will long be felt and the space she filled in our little community will not be easily supplied.  Those who on the bed of sickness have experienced the benefits of her assiduity and experience will long remember Mrs. Hathaway, and her benevolent and disinterested exertions in all cases to alleviate the misfortunes of her neighbors, it is to be hoped, will not soon be forgotten.  Of the loss sustained by her partner in life; Of the vacuum created in her family, we say nothing.  We obtrude not upon the hallowed precincts of mourning.

Halstead, under a monogram, G. and S., composed of white roses.  The bride was tastefully attired in dark slate colored silk with satin trimmings, the groom in the usual appropriate suit of black. The bride's maid was Miss Annie Stowell of Brighton, and the bride's groom Mr. Plumber of Mexico. At the conclusion of the ceremony the pair received the hearty congratulations of many who appreciate the worth of the united pair.  The great beauty, variety and value of the presents attracted much attention.  A dinner was served and here words fail to express the profusion and abundance of good things provided.  Mrs. L. NY], five years of age, ran a rusty nail into his foot several days ago, and that he died from the effects, his burial taking place last Saturday.  In such a case, it is highly important that the wound be thoroughly smoked with burning wool.  We have never known of a case when a rusty iron or nail wound was thus treated that caused much trouble.  It is a sure prevention of lockjaw, healing the wound without inflammation.  It should be remembered by everybody as one of the most simple and effective remedies.  Hamilton Rep.

Death of Ex-Judge Garvin

Hon. Samuel B. Garvin died at his residence in New York on Friday evening of apoplexy. The particulars of this sad event are thus given in the New York Times of Saturday.  He was ill less than forty-eight hours, and during that period though he appeared at times conscious, did not utter a word.  On Wednesday he was in his usual robust health attending to his professional duties.  At the close of his day's labors, he repaired to the hotel and partook of dinner and afterwards went to the residence of a client, Dr. Torrey, No. 131 West Twenty-third Street.  After a conversation in regard to business affairs and at about 9:30 o'clock, he said he thought he would go home and attempted to rise from the chair in which he was seated, but found himself powerless, and sank back with a slight spasmodic action. The power of speech seemed to have left him and after several futile attempts had been to arouse him, Dr. M.A. Pallen was summoned, and it was ascertained that the patient was suffering from paralysis of the whole right side.  He was conveyed to bed and on Thursday morning an ambulance was summoned from Bellevue Hospital, and he was conveyed to the Hotel Royal.  Mrs. Garvin who was visiting some friends at Yonkers was sent for, as was also his son, Henry M. Garvin, and two of his daughters who reside in the city.  Dr. J.D. Bryant (formerly of this village), the family physician and Dr. Austin Flint also were called and were unremitting in their efforts to restore the patient, but without success.  He appeared at intervals to recognize members of his family and friends and partook of slight nourishment.  At times also, when called, he would open his eyes as though the sense of hearing was not gone. At noon yesterday, a change for the worse was apparent and he sank slowly and steadily and died without a struggle. The fact of his illness was not known last night to more than a dozen of his friends. The funeral was attended on Monday last, and the interment took place at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ex-Judge Garvin was born in 1811 at Butternuts, Otsego County, N.Y., and was therefore 67 years of age at the time of his death.  His parents were in comfortable circumstances, and he received a liberal education.  Reaching the age of seventeen he removed to this village and entered upon the study of the law with Messrs. Buttolph & Thorp, then practicing Attorneys in this village, graduating five years later.  He then began practice in this village remaining some five years; afterwards he practiced in Sherburne about two years and then removed to Utica.  During his residence here he married the eldest daughter of Dr. Henry Mitchell, after whom Mr. G's, eldest son, who was born here in 1839, was named.  In 1850, he was elected District Attorney for Oneida county, and was subsequently appointed U.S. Attorney for the northern District of New York by President Pierce.  In 1858 he resigned that position and removed to New York City where he has since resided.  There he continued to interest himself in politics.  Falling into favor with the magnates of the ring he was elected judge of the Superior Court in 1863.  Upon the election of A. Oakey Hall, then District Attorney, to the mayoralty, Judge Garvin resigned his seat on the bench and was appointed by Gov. John T Hoffman to succeed Mr. Hall as District Attorney for Mr. Hall's unexpired term.  In 1869, he was made the Tammany nominee for re-election for a full term as District Attorney and was elected.  He went out of office Jan. 1, 1878, and his political associates had been by the time overthrown in State and city, he retired to private life and the practice of his profession  He was also a member of the last Constitutional Convention held in this State.

During Mr. Garvin's incumbency of a seat upon the Bench of the Superior Court, he tried several celebrated cases among which was the celebrated Strong divorce case, the trial being the sensation of the day, occupying the court for many weeks, enlisting the services of the most eminent counsel in the city, and resulting in a disagreement of the jury.  During his service as District Attorney in New York, he was the public prosecutor in the trial of John Real for the murder of Police Officer Smedick, of Daniel McFarland for the killing of Albert D. Richardson and other notable cases. After his retirement from that office he was associated with Charles O'Connor in the defense of Young Walworth, the parricide.  One of his last official acts was his attendance before the Grand Jury for the finding of the indictment against William M. Tweed, but the trial took place under Mr. Phelps' administration.  In early life he was initiated into the order of Free and Accepted Masons, and the independent Order of Odd Fellows, but never took any great interest in either of those organizations.

Ex-Judge Garvin was a man of marked presence, being over six feet in height and of good corresponding proportions. As a lawyer and jurist, he was trustworthy and able, but not especially eminent, and as an orator was vigorous but not eloquent.  He leaves surviving him his widow, and one son and three daughters, all married.  his son has for 15 years past held a position in the office of the City Controller.  Mr. G. was a brother-in-law of John Mitchell, Esq. of this village, who was in attendance at the funeral which took place on Monday last.
