Coventryville [Chenango Co., NY]:  Ray Southworth was united in marriage to Miss Lena Richmond at Norwich Thursday, April 25th and they are to live at the home of his father, T.A. Southworth, the happy couple has the best wishes of their many friends.

Martha Louisa (Brown) Booth

Northern Christian Advocate,  June 13, 1849

Martha Louisa Booth died in Millport, on the 23d of April, aged 38 years.  Sister Booth was the oldest daughter of Esquire and Martha Brown, was born in Madison Co., N.Y., July 29, 1811, and married to Mr. John Booth, Dec. 9, 1829, with whom she very pleasantly spent her remaining days.  She became a subject of converting grace in the village of Trumansburgh, under the labors of Rev. James Durham, and in the year 1841 connected herself with the Methodist Episcopal Chruch.  Some months before her death she gained the clear witness of the Spirit, that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin.  In it she lived, and in it she expired.   A.E. Jerusha Skillman

Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850

Jerusha Skillman died in German [Chenango Co., NY], Feb. 21, aged 79 years.  Mother Skillman was born March 1, 1771, in Huntington, Long Island, was converted to God, and became a member of the congregational Church when about 18, which relation she sustained first in Huntington, and afterward in Riverhead, until her death.  The Bible was her daily companion for many years, and its controlling power was evinced in the uniform piety of her life, and the triumph which attended her dissolution.  The victory was complete, and an unearthly "glory to God," as it was breathed from her dying lips, furnished to her family another proof of the Divinity of our holy religion.  Calling her son, F.M. Skillman, and his family to her bedside, she gave them a patriarchal farewell, then sweetly fell asleep in Jesus.  E.W. Breckenbridge.  McDonough, March 22, 1850

Mrs. George Wilcox 

Bainbridge Republican, July 16, 1880

On the 7th inst., Mrs. Geo. Wilcox, of Millard, Adair county, Mo., formerly of this town [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], together with a sister of her husband, Mrs. Denniston, formerly Mary Wilcox, also of this town, started after blackberries with a sixteen-year-old boy for driver  When about one mile from home, going through a new road where the timber had been lately cut off, the forward wheel of the wagon struck a stump, throwing the boy out, taking the lines with him.  The horse became frightened and ran about forty rods, when the ladies were both thrown out.  Mrs. Wilcox striking against some hard substance.  Mrs. Wilcox was breathing when help arrived, a few moments after the accident, but did not become conscious, and died a few moments after her husband got there.  Mrs. Denniston's left arm was broken, and she was otherwise bruised. Still she was able to write a long letter of particulars to friends here, on the 10th inst., from which this item was taken. The community for miles around was out to the funeral manifesting their regard for the deceased and the afflicted family--a husband and three children.  Mrs. Wilcox was 42 years old, and was the sister of Wm. H. Cannon, of this village.

In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on the 21st inst., of typhoid fever, Mr. Willard Tracy, aged 33 years and 8 months.

In Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], on the 17th isn't., of dropsy, Mrs. Nancy Sexton, widow of Capt. Seth Sexton, aged 76 years.

In Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], on the 24th inst., Capt. Able DeForest, father of Gen. H. DeForest, of Norwich, aged 94 years and 8 months.

Bainbridge Republican, May 28, 1880

J.W. Seeley, formerly of this place [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], died at Waupun, Wisconsin, the 25th inst., aged 60 years.  Mr. Seeley was a brother-in-law of Nelson Humphrey, of this town.

Bainbridge Republican, June 11, 1880

We see noticed in the Avon (Ill) Sentinel, the death at that place, on the 26th of May, Abijah G. Andrews, aged 78 years.  Mr. Andrews was a brother-in-law of Giles Smith, of Bainbridge.

Sarah Slaughter

Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850

Mrs. Sarah Slaughter, consort of Rev. W.B. Slaughter, of the Genesee Conference, died in Rush, N.Y. [Monroe Co.], upon the 7th inst., at the house of her father, Rev. Zina J. Buck. The general sweetness of temper and amiableness of disposition of sister S. endeared her to her friends, while her consistency and uniformity of Christian character, constituted her a blessing to the Church, wherever her lot was cast.  She became pious at about the age of 14.  From the age of 16 until she was 23, much of her time was spent either in teaching, or in attending school at our valuable Seminary. The last seven years of her life have been devoted to the happiness and encouragement in his ministerial labors of him, who, in this dispensation, is left to a solitude that heaven only can relieve; but who has the best of evidence, viz: that drawn from a correct Christian life, that she is now an angel of light.  J. Mrs. Thomas Nichols

Bainbridge Republican, December 26, 1884

West Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY]:  Died at West Bainbridge, December 19, 1884, Mrs. Thomas Nichols, in the 75th year of her age. The deceased was born in the town of Sidney, Delaware county, but has resided in the town of Bainbridge for 65 years.  Mrs. Nichols was highly esteemed for her many excellent qualities and beloved by her many friends.  She leaves two sons and three daughters to mourn her death. The remains were interred in the Episcopal cemetery in this village [Bainbridge, NY].

George D. Graves

Bainbridge Republican, February 4, 1887

On Friday morning, Jan. 21st, the angel of death touched the lips of Geo. D. Graves and his voice was stilled forever.  Living in our village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY] nearly his whole life time, he was well and favorably known.  Upright and honorable in all his dealings, he was passed on to the land of the dead, regretted and mourned by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.  Although in failing health for years, his sudden demise was not looked for and when his death was announced, it came as a sad surprise to those who had learned to love and respect him.  Of honest and industrious habits, he had made a success of life until forced to give up active pursuits. To those who asked, he ever gave wise counsel and good advice.  Of a genial disposition, his friends were many and to those who were near and dear, his loss in almost irreparable.  On the Tuesday following his death, brief services were held at the house of his father, in this village.  Rev. J.B. Pitman officiating, after which his remains were taken to Greene, N.Y. [Chenango Co.], for interment. The funeral was held on Wednesday, the 26th ult, at the house of his father-in-law, Mr. C.B. Wheeler, Rev. A.B. Rogers, Rector of Zion church, officiating.  Susquehanna Lodge, No. 167, F&AM of which he was a member, had charge of the services, assisted by the brethren of Easter light lodge, No. 126 [performing] the beautiful and impressive ceremonies of the fraternity.  All that was mortal of George D. Graves, was consigned to the grave.  Earth to Earth--ashes to ashes--dust to dust; "there to remain till the trumpet shall sound on the resurrection morn."

Powers Redfield

Bainbridge Republican, March 23, 1888

Died at Tunkhannock, Pa., Thursday, March 15, 1888, Powers Redfield, aged 81 years.  Deceased was born on what is now called Dingman Hill, in this town [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], and while a young man, moved to Pennsylvania, where he has lived nearly sixty years, returning to visit the few remaining associates of his boyhood, and the old Bainbridge hills last November for the last time.  Dr. Evans, a nephew, and Chas. Bixby, a cousin, of this village, were in attendance at the funeral, which was held on Sunday.

Sally Nickol

Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850

Sally Nickol, wife of Robert Nickol, died of consumption, in Hammond, St. Lawrence co., N.Y., March 18, in her 34th year.  Early in life Sister Nickol embraced the Savior, but, like many others, "left her first love."  About one week previous to her death, however, it pleased Christ to "renew her in the spirit of her mind," and she died in full confidence of a happy resurrection.  Her loss is felt by a large circle of friends, but by none so keenly as her companion and five small children.  But what is their loss is her gain.  And we accordingly commit the dust "to the earth as it was," expecting that "when Christ, who is her life, shall appear, she also will appear with him in glory."   L.D. Raymond W. Parsons

Bainbridge News, May 31, 1956

Raymond W. Parsons, of 37 Haendle Street, Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], died at 12:45 a.m. Saturday May 26, 1956, at the Wilson Memorial Hospital after a short illness.  He is survived by his wife, Hope I. Parsons; a daughter, Miss Clara Parsons, both of Binghamton, his father, Ben W. Parsons, of Oxford, and several cousins.  He was a member of Boulevard Methodist Church, Binghamton, Afton Lodge 360 F.&A.M., Vallonia Chapter 80, Royal Arch Masons, where he held the station of high priest in 1953.  The body was removed to the Karschner Funeral home, Afton, where funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m., the Rev. Melvin J. Dodd officiating.  Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge.  Mr. and Mrs. Parsons and daughter were former residents of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY].

William P. Lavender

Bainbridge News, June 28, 1956

William P. Lavender, 45, of 5 East Main Street, Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], owner of Lavender's Bainbridge Department Store, died early Friday morning at The Hospital Sidney, after five years of failing health.  Mr. Lavender was a bank examiner for the National Bank Examiners, Treasury Department, Washington, D.C., until 1945 when he bought a store in Smyrna, and one year later, he purchased the Bainbridge Department Store which he and Mrs. Lavender have conducted since that time.  Born July 8, 1910 at Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry P. Lavender. After graduating from high school, he attended New York University and the American Institute of Banking in New York City.  In 1934, he married Miss Louise Locke, of Englewood, N.J., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Englewood.  He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Chruch in Bainbridge.  He had sung in the choir at St. Peter's and at St. Paul's all of his life time.  He was a member of the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce, the Algonquin Grange, Bainbridge, and Whitehead lodge 184, F.&A.M., Cliffside Park, N.J.  Mr. Lavender will long be remembered by his many friends and associates for his gentleness and integrity, as well as his cheerfulness and great courage through his trying illness.  Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Louise Locke Lavender, of Bainbridge; his mother, Mrs. Harry P. Lavender, of Hasbrouck, N.J.; three sisters, Mrs. Richard Klein, of Wood Ridge, N.J., Mrs. Leslie Wilde, of Maywood, N.J., and Mrs. Robert Courtwright, of Ramsey, N.J.; four nephews; three grandnieces. The body was removed to the Harold Sherman Funeral Home, 58 West Main Street, Bainbridge, where Masonic services were conducted Sunday evening at 8 p.m.  The funeral service was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Chruch Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. James E. Wolfe, rector, officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Churchyard Cemetery. The pall bearers were:  Francis A. Demeree, Fred Hamlin, Milliard G. Howland, E. Danforth Knight, Jr., David Calhoun and Herbert Denton.  The honorary bearers were:  Dr. Edward Danforth, Dr. Ben L. Dodge, Kenneth E. Eldred, Louis B. Fairbanks, George M. Skinner, Harry F. Noyes, L.A. Orvis, Leigh W. Evans, all of Bainbridge; and Dr. Lawrence Gellerman, of Afton.

Hattie M. Banner

Bainbridge News, September 13, 1956

Mrs. Hattie M. Banner passed away Aug. 29, 1956, at her home on Guilford Street, Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY].  She had been in poor health for several years and was confined to her bed the last three weeks following a fall in her bedroom which resulted in a fractured hip.  Mrs. Banner was born Oct. 6, 1876, in Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], the daughter of Chauncey and Celinda (Boldt) Ferguson, at the old Ferguson homestead, Searles hill Road, now the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bliss.  Mrs. Bliss is a niece of the late Mrs. Banner.  On the lawn of the Bliss farm stands a maple tree known to the Ferguson family as the Centennial Maple as it was set out just a few weeks before Mrs. Banner was born, by her late parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Ferguson.  This tree has furnished shade for many family reunions and gatherings in past years.  Mrs. Banner was the youngest of seven children.  On May 24, 1894, she was married to Charlie G. Smith.  During their married life they lived in New Berlin, Binghamton and Otego and in New Milford, Pa.  Mr. Smith died May 25, 1929.  She was remarried on Apr. 5, 1930, to Robert L. Banner, of Bainbridge, and since has lived here.  Mrs. Banner was a member of the First Baptist church, of Bainbridge, a past member of the old Bainbridge Grange and a past charter member of Afton O.E.S.  She was held in high esteem and loved by all who knew her. She was always patient and thoughtful of others. Surviving are her husband, Robert L. Banner; three daughters, Mrs. George Myers and Mrs. Lester Stead, both of Bainbridge, and Mrs. Wilmore Harp, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a son, Clarence Smith, of Otego; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren (a great-grandson, Russell Anderson Southard, of Otego, was born the day Mrs. Banner died); also several nieces nephews and cousins.  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Harold Sherman Funeral Home in Bainbridge.  The Rev. Ruthven Chalmers, pastor of the First Baptist Chruch, Bainbridge, officiated.  Burial was in the family plot in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, the bearers, all grandsons of the deceased, were Ralph Smith and Russell Southard, of Otego; Robert Gordon, of Binghamton; Charles Myers and George Mulkins, of Bainbridge.

Rice Marvin

Northern Christian Advocate, April 3, 1850

Rice Marvin died in this village [Millport, Chemung Co., NY], on the 19th inst., after an illness of two weeks, leaving a wife and one child to feel their loss, aged 29 years.  Brother Marvin experienced the power of saving grace about nine years ago, under the labors of Rev. P. Tower, then in charge of the Wellsborough circuit, and became a substantial member of the Methodist episcopal Church.  In January last, while reading "Faith and its Effects," he was able to fully apprehend the end of the atonement for the complete sanctification of believers; and while worshiping with his little family at the domestic altar, his faith took hold on the Lord Jesus Christ, a whole Savior, through the complete sacrifice, and heard him say, "be thou clean."  From that hour until the weary wheels of life stood still, except for a few minutes when his reason was partially beclouded, "his sky was ever clear."  We deeply feel our loss, but it is his eternal gain.   J. Celinda Margaret (Boalt) Hicks Ferguson

1846-1926

At the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.G. Smith, 419 Court St., Binghamton occurred the death of Mrs. Celinda Boalt Ferguson. She was born in Chenango county June 28, 1846.  In 1861 she married Samuel K. Hicks who died in 1868.  She was left with one daughter.  In 1873 she married Chauncey Ferguson, entering his home a cheerful companion, a willing and affectionate mother.  For many years she has been a member of the M.E church.  Also a member of the Vanderburg W.R.C. of Afton.  The funeral was held Nov. 27, 1926 at the M.E. Church at Bainbridge.  Her former pastor Rev. Frank James assisted by Rev. Williams officiated. Burial in the episcopal cemetery. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. W.R. Lines of Otego, also three daughters and one son, Mrs. C.G. Smith of Binghamton, Mrs. C.J. Fuller of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Mima Norton and Mr. George Ferguson, both of Bainbridge.

Mrs. George Barber

Chenango Union, June 20, 1878

Death by diphtheria occurred to the wife of George Barber at her residence near this place on Saturday morning of last week.  She leaves a husband and three children, the eldest hardly more than three years old, to mourn her loss.  The funeral will occur today (Monday).  Mr. Barber, and little ones have the sympathy of the entire community in their great affliction.

Eunice Lucretia (Lyon) Smith

1822 - 1895

Died, March 21, 18956, Eunice L. Smith, wife of Dea. J. Wheeler Smith aged 72 years, 6 months.  She united with the church at fifteen and until her death was an ornament in society, a treasure in her loving family, and a mother in Israel. She was married at nineteen and for fifty-three years has walked before her family a model mother.   Twelve years ago she received a paralytic shock which incapacitated her for labor and in all those years not a murmur has escaped her lips.  Having buried three children, she quietly folded her hands in death, leaving a husband and six children to mourn her irreparable loss.  Thus

"One by one earth's ties are broken;

Step by step age comes apace;

One by one farewells are spoken;

And the one last fond embrace."

Her funeral was conducted  by her pastor, Rev. F. E. Benjamin, text, Proverbs 31:28.

HALL:  In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], Sept. 1, 1894, Mrs. Lucina Hall, aged 80 years, mother of Mrs. H.B. Seeley of Norwich.

CRANDALL:  In Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], Sept. 1, 1894, Carrie N. [Crandall], wife of Joseph Crandall, aged 51 years.

GRIFFIN:  At Ireland's Mills, Sept. 4, 1894 James Griffin, age 12 years.

BARROWS:  In McDonough [Chenango Co., NY], Lynn [Barrows], only son of George and Mary Barrows, aged 3 years.
