In Smyrna [Chenango Co., NY], March 9th, of measles and congestion of the lungs, Mr. Cyrenus M. Briggs, aged 30? years.

Smyrna:  The death of our highly esteemed and respected fellow townsman, Cyrenus M. Briggs, casts a gloom over our whole community.  Mr. Briggs was an excellent citizen, honest and upright in all his dealings, a kind and obliging neighbor, and a warm and genial companion.  He leaves a wife and three children, who sustain an irreparable loss.  Measles are quite prevalent in our town and village, and have been in many cases quite severe, resulting in two or three deaths.

Wife Poisoning:  Alonzo Adams, of West Edmeston, Otsego County [NY], has been arrested on a charge of poisoning his wife.  Adams didn't love his own wife.  He did love some other man's wife.  Arsenic was found in the flour that the unloved Mrs. Adams made into bread.  Happily, Mrs. A. ate a great deal of bread and took more arsenic than was needed to kill her.  It simply had the effect to make her very sick.  Suspicions were aroused.  The flour was sent to Prof. Avery, of Hamilton College.  He found arsenic and Adams was arrested.

Death of Augustus Willard, M.D.

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, March 18, 1868

A correspondent in Greene [Chenango Co., NY] has kindly furnished us with the following, relating to the death of Dr. Willard, of that town:

Died, suddenly at Ellicottville, N.Y., [Cattaraugus Co] on the 12th inst. Augustus Willard, M.D. of Greene, Chenango Co., N.Y., aged 68 years.

In announcing the above melancholy event, something more than the short, epitaph of "hix jacit" is required.  Dr. Willard was emphatically a strongly marked man.  His intellectual, professional and personal characteristics render essential a brief obituary notice at the hands of his contemporaries.  He was the eldest son of Samuel Willard, MD., who graduated at Harvard College in 1787.  He resided at Stafford, Ct..  The deceased was born in 1809.  He received a good school and academical education and entered the study of Medicine with Dr. Thomas of Cooperstown.  In 1821 he entered the office of Dr. Charles Joslyn, of Greene.  With him and the Professor of Harvard Medical College he completed his apprenticeship.  In 1823 he graduated at the above-named Medical College, and among some forty graduates received the prize for the best medical thesis of the class.  In 1824, at the written solicitation of a number of its citizens, he located in the village of Greene.

His sterling intellectual powers, their strong and undivided application to his professional duties soon gave him prominence among his professional brethren and inspired the confidence of his patrons.  It is enough to say that through a long life he has fully justified the confidence reposed in him by the entire community, as an honest, upright and skillful physician.  He had a strong desire to benefit and improve mankind.  He made an effort to combine intellectual power to attain that end, in every social organization having this end in view.  He was the nucleus from which radiated the greatest good to the greatest number.

In his professional associations, the County, State and National organizations have felt the influence of his talents, and his ardent devotion to their interests.  In the Masonic world,  iIn all its organizations, he has been ever faithful and eminently worthy.  In all those relations his merits have not been unrewarded.  He has been the recipient of their highest honors.  Hence his name and his fame is not local or ephemeral, but it extends over the State, and is enduring.

Dr. Willard has ever been a champion of popular education, and his convictions of duty embraced not the few, but the many.  Indeed, in all the relations of life, from the social circle to the whole brotherhood of man, his head and heart have been devoted to the welfare of his species.  Viewing him in all the relations of life, his survivors can point to few more worthy examples for imitation than that presented by the life and character of the deceased.

His funeral occurred at Greene, on the 15th inst., and was attended by a larger concourse of people than has ever been had there on a similar occasion.  The members of the Binghamton Commandry of Knight Templars formed the Guard of Honor; the members of Norwich, Oxford and Coventry lodges were present with full delegations. The burial service was enunciated by Past Grand master Clinton F. Page.

Peace peace to the departed!  May the influence of his example shed its light over our future pathway.

At White Store [Chenango Co., NY], Jan. 20th, 1868, of typhoid fever, Eliza [Angell], only daughter of George Curtis, and wife of Horatio P. Angell, deceased, aged 25 years.  Our sympathies were deeply moved when, a few months since, the bereaved wife came from her western home to the home of her childhood, with all her bright hopes hidden under the coffin lid.  Kind friends gathered around her, and performed the last sad rites to the departed, and when all was over, all that love and sympathy could suggest to cheer the lonely one was done, but it could not avail to stay the hand of the Destroyer.  A beautiful little daughter came to her arms to win her back to life and hope, but the same dread disease through which she had watched her husband fastened upon her, and she went down into the dark valley in triumph, leaning upon the Savior, to whom she had given her young heart. She cheerfully gave up her darling child, and all the friends who loved her, and fell asleep in Jesus.

The Voyage Over

Shooting Affair in Bainbridge

We learn from a source which seems to be reliable, that Mr. Elliot J. Kidder, a well known resident of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], was shot on Monday afternoon last, while in the woods with his hired man, by Robert Corbin, of that town.  It appears that there was an old difficulty existing between the two, and that Corbin some years since threatened Kidder's life if he ever put his foot upon the ground in dispute. The shot was fatal.

Shocking Accident in Oxford

It is our painful duty to record one of the most melancholy and singular incidents which to our knowledge ever occurred in this County.

On the 25th of December, amid the congratulations of friends, the Doctor [George A. Shoales], was united in marriage to Miss Annie Maria, daughter fo Wm. A. Harrington, Esq., of Oxford [Chenango Co., NY].  After a brief journey, the youthful bride with all her energies set herself to the task of preparing for the duties which the now relation imposed upon her, as a faithful and devoted companion.

On Monday, the 3d inst., her husband went to Oxford, prepared to remove his wife to their new home in Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY].  Upon reaching the residence of her father, at evening, he was surprised to learn that she had been quite indisposed for the past twenty-four hours, though the illness was not apprehended to be of an alarming character. Tuesday, the symptoms were less promising, yet no serious doubts were entertained of a favorable termination.  On Wednesday morning the disease, which proved to be cerebro spinal meningitis, or brain fever, was fully developed, and the indications to the practiced eye of the physician were ominous of extreme danger.

The Doctor, who up to this time since his arrival had had the case in charge, administering such means as were at his command, desiring remedies which he had not, and also the aid of counsel, and anxious that not a moment's time be lost, mounted his horse, without waiting for saddle or bridle, and started on for the proposed help at full speed.  Just after crossing the river, on Navy Island, the horse took fright from a dog and the rider was thrown to the ground.  Unfortunately, he maintained his hold upon the halter till the frighted animal brought his head with much force against one of the guard posts on the canal bridge, fracturing the brain. Senseless and bleeding, the purple stream issuing from the ears and the nose, the Doctor was taken to the Stage house, where every means was called into requisition for his relief, which ingenuity or skill could devise. At evening still unconscious, the husband was removed to the dwelling of his now unconscious wife, her reason having taken its flight almost simultaneously with his.  There lay the newly married couple of six weeks before; but how changed the event, how strange the scene!  Physicians, ministers and friends gathered around, but what could they do?  

At eight o'clock on Thursday morning the spirit gently whispered to the bride, "Come up higher."  On Friday morning, at three o'clock, the bridegroom joined his companion in that house not made with hands, to go no more out forever.

Thus, suddenly passed away from earth husband and wife, in a singular and unaccountable manner, ere the sun had reached its noontide, just assuming the sterner trials and duties of life, each ignorant of the fate of the other.

On Sabbath afternoon last, the deceased were deposited in the same grave, in Oxford Cemetery. We saw them lying side by side, in the room in which six weeks before they had solemnly subscribed to the marriage covenant, dressed in nuptial robes, the bridal wreath encircling the brow, ready for burial.  So natural and life-life did the two appear, we stopped to wonder if this was death.

After prayer by the Rev. Mr. Payson, Presbyterian, their remains were removed from Mr. Harrington's residence, in the eastern part of the village, to the Congregational Church, followed by an immense concourse of people.  In the procession were large delegations of Good Templars from Norwich, Plymouth and Oxford, nearly the entire Lodge of the last named place being present.  The physicians of Oxford, with a full delegation from this town, were in attendance.

The services in the Church were conducted by Rev. Mr. Pauson, assisted by Rev. Messrs. Queal and Stafford, of Oxford, and the Rev. Mr. Cochrane, Methodist, of Plymouth  Appropriate and touching addresses were made by Rev. Messrs. Payson and Queal, the former speaking more particularly of Mrs. Shoales, and of her Christian life, having been for some years a consistent member of his Church; the latter alluding more especially to the character and worth of Dr. Shoales, whom he had known for a number of years, and whose exemplary life as a devoted Christian was worthy of emulation.

The services at the grave closed the scenes of an eventful day, by many sad hearts long to be remembered.

Dr. Shoales was a graduate of the State Normal School and also of the Medical Department of the University of Vermont.  For some two years he was Acting Assistant Surgeon in the war of the Rebellion, being attached to Sherman's Grand Army in its March to the Sea.  Possessed of good abilities, and in the vigor of health, his prospects for future happiness and usefulness were truly flattering.  His age was about 30; that of his wife 27 years.

Simeon Freeman

Died in Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], January 21st, 1868, Simeon Freeman, in the eighty-sixth year of his age.

Thus, has passed away another of the old and respected citizens of our county.  Mr. Freeman came to this town with his parents, some seventy-five years ago, when there were but two or three log houses, and one frame building in this village, and lived about four years on the farm across the river form the village, where David Graves now lives [in 1868], but which was then new and uncultivated.  from thence he removed to the farm on the Centre Road about one and a half miles from Plymouth or "French Settlement," where he has since resided and from which he was taken to his burial.

Mr. Freeman was one of the first subscribers to this paper, and has been a constant one since that time, commencing life as an Anti-mason, He was next a member of the Whig party during its entire existence, and then a firm and intelligent Republican.  He raised a family of four children, two of whom with his widow, survive him and mourn his loss.

During all his long life, Mr. Freeman has been an industrious, upright, and valued citizen and now leaves behind him a good reputation and a pleasant memory.

Death of Two Brothers

Mr. Thompson G. Fisher, an old resident of this County [Chenango Co., NY], died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Cyrus Hartwell, in Sherburne, on Monday, the 27th ult., aged about 76 years.

Mr. Calvin Fisher, a brother of Thompson, died in Sherburne, at the residence of Alonzo Cook, on the 29th, aged some 67 years.

Their father, Daniel Fisher, settled in the Chenango Valley near seventy years ago, when all this region was a dense wilderness, there being at that time but two or three houses erected in this village.  In consideration of a landed interest in New Berlin, this sturdy Pioneer cleared up a tract of ground, on which is now known as the Bockee farm, in North Norwich.  Subsequently he settled upon the hill two miles back from the river, in the town of Plymouth, where he reared a large family, who found homes in different sections of the State and the West.

Thompson, a man of much activity and good business capacity, located over forty years ago in Smyrna, where he became a large and thriving farmer.  Possessing the confidence of the people, he was called from time to time to fill important offices in the town.  In 1859 he removed to Norwich, remaining perhaps four years, during which time he lost his wife and two younger daughters.  Out of a family of ten children, but four are now living, of whom Thompson G. Fisher, of this village is the youngest.

Calvin changed his residence from Plymouth to Smyrna, some twelve or fifteen years since. Although he did not have the faculty of acquiring an over-abundance of this world's goods, he possessed that which often gives its possessor more happiness, a contented mind, and a kind and obliging heart.  In rather poor health, as he had been for many months, on Monday he visited his brother, in time only to witness his death. Remaining to attend the funeral, appointed for Wednesday, the night previous he was taken violently ill with congestion of the lungs, and lived less than twenty-four hours.  He leaves a wife, but no children.

Thus, one after another, in quick succession, are the links being broken which connect the present and future with the distant past.

We are pained to announce the death of John L. Brown, Esq., of Preston, on Thursday last, of consumption.  He was an exemplary young man, universally esteemed in the community in which he resided, and in politics an enthusiastic Democrat. At the time of his death, he held the office of Justice of the Peace of the town.  His funeral was attended on Sunday by a large number of the Masonic Fraternity of this and adjoining towns, he being a member of Norwich lodge.  He was son of Dudley Brown, Esq., and his age 33 years.

The remains of the late Philander B. Prindle, Esq., whose sudden death we announced last week, were on Wednesday morning last, at eleven o'clock conveyed to Emmanuel Church in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], followed by a large concourse of our citizens.  At the Church, funeral services were held, by Rev. Mr. Lewis. The stores and business places were very properly closed between the hours of eleven and twelve o'clock, and at the conclusion of the exercises, the friends of the deceased started with the corpse for Johnstown [Fulton Co. NY], his native village, and final resting place.  Many friends accompanied the remains to the outskirts of the village, while the church bells tolled as the mournful cortege moved through the streets.  The saddened faces of all attested the sorrow felt at the loss of one whose memory will remain forever green in their hearts.

Died:  Ward Balcom has died from the effects of a gunshot wound he received while out beyond the Rocky Mountains, an account of which we published a few weeks since.  We shall give our readers further particulars of the sad affair as soon as received.  Oxford Times

Black Hills, Dakota Ter., January 22d, 1868

Dear Times:  I have received a letter from home and among its items was a request for an account of the accidental shooting, and death of Ward Balcom, formerly of Oxford [Chenango Co., NY].  I wrote some time ago an account of the sad affair, and its fatal termination, but it seems the letter did not reach Oxford.

Ward with a small party started on a prospecting tour (for gold) on the 6th of November.  On the 14th at noon, he and Asa Denton started ahead of the pack mules to make a camp for the night.  The mules loaded with Elk, Deer and mining tools failed to come up to the camp.  Ward and Denton sat up till midnight, then fired their guns, but got no answer from the men with the mules.  They piled up brush and went to sleep, Denton, with a thin coat on and Ward in his shirtsleeves amid the snows of this region.  In the morning they started for the Tie Camp of the Union Pacific Railroad, some twenty miles distant, reaching there at noon the 15th. As they were crossing a log bridge about a half mile from their home, and near the Railroad Sawmill, Denton went down to the creek to get some water.  Ward was on the bridge.  Denton stooped to get a cup of water for Ward, when he heard the gun, and Ward cry out that he was shot.  He called the men from the mill, and they carried him to the house. The gun was one of the short Spencer army carbines, large ball.  In taking it from his shoulder it slipped thro' his hands, the hammer struck one of the logs, broke it off, drove it on to the cartridge and discharged it.  The ball struck him on the right side at the point of the eighth rib and came out through the right shoulder blade near the top. They sent for the surgeon and myself at Fort Sanders.  I did not get the news until the next day at 10 A.M.  We started, it was thirty-five miles, and it was twenty-seven hours from the time he was shot until we reached him. We carried him to a more comfortable house about half a mile from the mill and did all we could for him. For twenty days he seemed to be gaining, and we thought he would recover, the Surgeon said he would live if internal mortification did not set in. the wounds were such that nothing could be done save to keep down internal inflammation, but in spite of all efforts mortification set in and at noon Dec. 8th, he died.  I brought the body to Fort Sanders and with the assistance of the boys at the Post, buried all that remained of Ward. All the residents at the Post followed him to the grave.  He had many friends, and all felt badly to lose him, for he was one to win and keep people's friendship.  \

Boy Drowned:  A colored boy named Eugene Kelly was drowned in this village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY] Wednesday.  He was coasting near the river bridge, when venturing too far his sled ran off into the water.  The current being rapid, all attempts to rescue him proved futile.  Bainbridge Ledger.

Death of Philander B. Prindle

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], suddenly, Jan. 12th, Philander B. Prindle, Esq., aged 59 years.

Our community was startled and shocked on Monday afternoon last, by the announcement of the sudden decease of Philander B. Prindle, Esq., one of the most noted and esteemed citizens of our village.  He expired at his office, nearly opposite the Noyes House, about half-past 4 o'clock P.M. on that day.  He had been in unusually good spirits for the last few hours before his death, and seemingly in excellent health.  The writer of this brief notice, with others, was in his company between the hours of 2 and 3 o'clock, in the office of W.N. Mason, Esq., and has seldom seen him when he was in more pleasant and social frame of mind.  Not far from half-past 4, Mr. Daniel Noyes left Mr. Prindle's office and on the way out met his (Mr. P.'s) washer woman, with a basket of clothes, going in.  The woman states that she was in the room some minutes and conversed with Mr. Prindle, noticing nothing unusual in his appearance. Suddenly she observed him sliding from his chair, as though in a fainting condition.  She immediately raised his head and sprinkled water in his face, when, finding he was thoroughly unconscious, she called upon Mr. Mason (whose office is just across the hall from that of the deceased) for help.  Fortunately, at that moment he saw Dr. Bailey, and soon after Dr. Bellows, passing in their cutters, and called them; but before they could reach the room Mr. P. had breathed his last.  Mr. Noyes states that when he left Mr. Prindle's presence, there was nothing in his manner or appearance to indicate the approach of sickness or death.  The physicians decided that his death was caused by paralysis of the heart.

Mr. Prindle came to Norwich about the year 1832, from Sherburne, where he had been practicing law.  His native place was Johnstown in this State, where a brother and other relatives still reside.  On coming to Norwich to live, he entered the County Clerk's Office as Deputy under Jarvis K. Pike, and for many years held a position there under various administrations of the office.  In 1841, after having served two years as an Assistant Clerk of Assembly of this State, he was elected Clerk of that body, and again elected to the same position in 1847, 1848, and 1849.  Since then, Mr. Prindle has lived among us in a quiet, gentlemanly, unpretending way, consulting his tastes and pleasures, instead of what might have been in him a reasonable ambition for public life.  He has held the offices of Supervisor and Justice of the Peace, well and honorably discharging his duties, and at the time of his death, was clerk of the Board of Excise.  He was also Vestryman of Emmanuel Church, Norwich.

It is no purpose of this sketch to do justice to the memory of Mr. Prindle, his urbanity, his unaffected kindness of heart, his scholarly habits and inclinations, his vast fund of literary and general knowledge, tor that were impossible in our limited space.  But we desire to express so fr as we can the respect for him entertained by our entire community, and the sorrow for his loss that is in every heart.  mr. Prindle's age was about 59 and he was never married.

Letter from the 10th N.Y. Cavalry

We are permitted to extract the following from a letter lately received from Thomas C. Pettis, by his wife.  It contains the sad intelligence of the death of Sheldon Bolles, by lightning, after having well and valiantly withstood the shock of shot and shell, and the death-dealing rain of rebel bullets.

May 31st, Within 10 Miles of Richmond

We have had some hard battles, two days ago, we had the hardest cavalry battle that was ever fought. We drove them after some hard fighting.  Our loss was large, but the rebs was a good deal more.  One man in Co. K, was killed, his name was A. Martin.  Two were slightly wounded, one was George Booth, but the worst of all is that Sheldon Bolles is dead, he was struck by lightning and killed instantly.  I was a few rods from him.  I thought it struck close.  It killed 2 horses and there was several knocked down.  We had a battle yesterday and they are fighting now a few miles from here. We are now within 10 miles of Richmond, and we are waiting for orders.  The infantry is ahead of us this morning, but I think we will have to go out on the flank in a little while.  If we can get Richmond we will have them whipped.  Then we can come home.  Don't worry about me, I have plenty to eat and that the rebs can't say.  They eat raw corn.  That was all they had in their haversacks, for I saw over one hundred and fifty of those that were shot, and all they had was from one to two quarts of corn.  They are hard up, and they will be harder up before Grant gets through with them.

Fatal Accident:  Mr. Dana Rice, a worthy citizen of Columbus [Chenango Co., NY], residing some four miles east or southeast of Sherburne, on the New Berlin Road, lost his life by a shocking accident which occurred in Sherburne village on Friday last.

The unfortunate man, it appears, was driving into town with a load of bark, upon a pair of bobsleighs, and while crossing a bar in the road, on what is known as "East Hill," in the eastern part of the village, by some sudden jerk or movement of the bobs, was precipitated between the horses, the load passing over him, bruising and mangling the body in a fearful manner.  The horses taking fright, instantly commenced running, and succeeded in extricating themselves from the load, which was overturned, well down East Street, near the residence of C.B. Weaver. The horses then made off through the town, in opposite directions.

Rice, in a perfectly senseless condition was taken to the McKay House, when he expired in something like an hour.  Doctors Easton and VanKeuren were soon on the spot, but to no purpose.  Drs. Avery and Beecher, of this village, who were in town, also saw the body before life was extinct, but neither medicine nor surgery could be of the least avail.

The deceased was a single man, aged about 30 years, temperate in his habits, and highly esteemed in the community in which he lived. We believe he was the only surviving son of aged parents, upon whom the terrible blow must have fallen with crushing weight.

An Extraordinary Elopement

Wednesday evening of the present week the village of Whitney's Point in this county [Broome Co.  NY], was thrown into an extraordinary fever of excitement over the elopement of one of its honored and most successful businessmen with a young lady who has been esteemed as a devout member of the Congregational church and a successful teacher of music.  The names of the parties in this transaction in which all seem to have been equally agreed, are Mr. Simon S. Newell and his wife, and Miss Frances Thurston.

As we hear the story, Mr. Newell has for years shunned the society of his wife at home, in consequence, it was alleged, of her peevishness and fault finding, and has worked early and late at his store, amassing, some say, a fortune of from $25,000 to $30,000 in the hardware and stove trade.  Some time since he sold out his interest, and with his family, consisting of his wife and two boys, moved into the house of Mr. John Thruston, father of the young woman already mentioned, where it is thought her sympathy for him first attracted his attention.

For several months just passed, Mr. Newell has been busily engaged in settling up outstanding accounts and preparing for the elopement, of which, his wife has all along apparently been conscious and an abettor.  Out of his abundant means he purchased a desirable house and lot, gave it to his wife with $6,000 in money, and left in trust for his two boys yet underage, the sum of $3000.

On Wednesday evening, as the Syracuse train from the north passed through the village, the parties, accompanied by the friends, who bade them a friendly farewell at the depot, took seats for this city, on their way to the South, where the pair intend to make their home, and live in peace and quietness if they can.  Binghamton Daily Republican, 6th inst.

It is with unfeigned sadness that we learn of the death of Hon. Solomon S. Hall, of Smyrna, who expired at his residence in that town on Friday evening, Dec. 13, at the age of 61 years.  Mr. Hall was one of the most prominent and esteemed citizens of the northern portion of this county and was a member of the Assembly of this State somewhere near 1844-5.  In every relation of life, public and private, he was respected and loved by all who had opportunity to appreciate the generous and noble qualities of his nature.  In his death his family and the community in which he lived sustain an irreparable loss.

Elopement from Unadilla

Mr. Perry Smith, an industrious clock and watch repairer of Unadilla [Otsego Co., NY], had occasion about eight months ago to employ one Wm. Thomas, a carpenter, in repairing his house, and for some time the latter boarded with his employer.  An improper intimacy sprang up between Thomas and Mrs. Smith, which resulted in an elopement of the guilty pair last Monday evening.  The woman took several valuable articles belonging to her husband and left a child three years old.  The pair were pursued, arrested and compelled to deliver over the property belonging to the injured husband, who then bade them pursue their road of dishonor and shame till their sin bring its own certain punishment.  Cooperstown Journal

Death of Captain James Parker

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], Dec. 7th, Capt. James Packer, aged 83 years.

Another of the Pioneer Fathers has passed to his rest.  On the 7th of December, about mid-day, Capt. James Packer departed this life, at Norwich, in the 84th year of his age, after an illness of seven weeks, borne with great fortitude. 

Sixty years ago, the deceased, with his youthful wife, Mary Billings, removed from Guilford, Vt., to this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], settling on the Gilmore Brook, three miles southwest of the Village, on the farm since called by his name, which was then, like most of the country, an unbroken wilderness. With energy and hope he entered upon the labors of Pioneer life, hand in hand with the bold and brave adventurers who drove back the savages and the wild beast and opened our fruitful County to the sun, earning in the effort a home, a competence, and an honorable name.  In that olden time, beneath low roofs and smoky rafters, kindness and hospitality kept open house, and friendship and affection were more than --"an empty sound, / The modern proud one' jest."

There were realities, assuaging the privations, and sweetening the labors of the early settlers, making strange places homelike, and all the ways paths of peace and pleasantness.  Nor were they passing guests with the deceased and his gentle wife, they abided like natural members of the household.

In June 1826, Mr. P. lost his intelligent and amiable consort, and was thus entrusted with the care and management of a large family of small children.  In this responsible duty it may be said of him that the stream of parental affection, swollen by his bereavement, continued to flow in their regard with rich and unabated fullness to the last.

Mr. Packer leaves a widow, Eunice Lewis, his companion and comforter for about 40 years, and six children, Charles Packer, of Corning, Dr. Nelson Packer, Wellsborough, Pa., Horace Packer, Oxford; Mrs. Wm. R. Bree, Norwich; Mrs. Nathan Pendleton, Oxford, and Mrs. D.M. Holmes, of Norwich, besides numerous grandchildren.

In his personal characteristics, he was good and kind in every relation of life.  He lived honorably, dealt justly, loved mercy, and, we humbly trust, partakes, in return, of the Rest and refreshment of the People of God.

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Monday evening, Nov. 18th, of apoplexy, Gen. Obadiah G Rundell in the 70th year of his age.

Gen. Obadiah German Rundell, an old, respected and widely known citizen of this village, died suddenly at his residence on Monday evening of this week, about 11 o'clock, of apoplexy.  He had been for some time past in a feeble and rather failing condition, though occasionally seen on the streets.  Monday night, his wife having left their room to procure medicine for his relief in another part of the house, on her return, though absent but for a few minutes, found that he had breathed his last.  It appears that he was attacked with apoplexy and expired almost upon the instant.

Gen. Rundell's age was 70.  Throughout his long life, up to the present season, when growing infirmities admonished him of the necessity of rest and quiet, he was an active and persistent businessman.  Probably few of our citizens have had dealings with so large a number of people as he in the course of his business operations.

In all the relations of life, as a citizen, neighbor, friend and relative, Gen. Rundell ever exhibited the most exalted qualities of the heart.  He will be missed, and his loss deplored, not only by his family but by the community at large.  He leaves a widow and two daughters, one of the latter being the wife of D.C. Brigham, Esq., of Pittsburgh, Pa., and the other Mrs. Henry Per Lee of Binghamton.

Death of Hon. Isaac Stokes:  Under our obituary head we last week published a brief announcement of the death of Hon. Isaac Stokes, of Otselic [Chenango Co., NY], at the age of 71.  Mr. Stokes was for many years one of the most prominent and substantial citizens of the county.  Besides serving his town in many important capacities, in 1836 he was elected Member of Assembly from Chenango, on the same ticket with the late Squire Smith and John F. Hill.  At that time this county had three members of the Legislature, and all who were that year elected now repose in their native dust.  Mr. Stokes was a gentleman of intelligence and integrity, a practical, hardworking farmer and in every relation of life a man of unblemished character.  His death lessens the number of valuable and esteemed citizens of the county, whose recollections and associations and usefulness date back to the preceding generation.
