Singular Accident

At the conclusion of the funeral services of Mr. James H. Davis, which were held at the residence of Mrs. Hamilton, on Lock Street, on Saturday afternoon last, it was found, from the peculiar construction of the stairs that the coffin could not be carried down them from the room above, where the corpse had lain.  It was suggested to take it through a window to the roof of a verandah in front of the house, and from that point lower it to the ground.  Accordingly, four men removed it to the verandah, and while preparing to lower it, the entire structure gave way and fell with a crash, a distance of some ten feet, carrying with it the occupants, two of whom were somewhat bruised and the head of the coffin shattered.  A lady standing in the door under the verandah was badly bruised, but no bones broken.  No blame can attach to anyone as the premises were examined by a number of those present, before the accident, and were considered safe.
