In Preston [Chenango Co., NY] on the 28th inst. Mrs. Sophia L.A. [Jerome], wife of Richard Jerome, aged 26 years, 6 months and 26 days.  The deceased during her short yet severe illness, was led to trust in Christ, as the great physician of souls, and although many earthly friends clustered around to administer to her wants, all could not save her.  She has exchanged the toils and afflictions of this life for the joys of the blessed in heaven.  She requested that the following beautiful verse might be inscribed upon her tombstone:

"Jesus can make a dying bed / Feel soft as downy pillows are. / Whilst on his breast I lean my heard, / And breathe my life out sweetly there."  [Oct. 31, 1849]

In East Pharsalia [Chenango Co., NY], august 26th, Lewis E. [Felton], in the 4th year of his age; and on the 2d inst. Mary L. [Felton], aged 11 months, the youngest son and daughter of Lyman and Eleanor D. Felton [Oct. 17, 1849]

Those children are by God withdrawn, / From sorrow, sin and pain; / They now behold the glorious dawn / Of love's eternal reign.

Removed before that age mature, / When man account must give, / Their bright inheritance is sure / With God their souls shall live.

Beloved parents, your transient loss / Is their eternal gain; / Resigned to Jesus, bear your cross, / Nor his kind will arraign!

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Friday, the 7th inst. at the residence of Col. John Randall, in whose service she had lived for more than forty years, of an apoplectic fit, Sally Randall, a colored woman, aged 52 years. [Oct. 3, 1849]

Sally, I would my pen had power / So proudly to transcribe thy name, / That future bards might find it writ / On the enduring rolls of fame.

But no such tribute can I pay / To a devotion rare as thine; / Untiring as a summer's day, / And warm in deepest wintertime.

But down within our hearts enshrined / Sally, thy love is deeply laid; / Sweet memories are with thee entwined, / And by our own thy grave is made.

Yes, Sally, with the little flock / Thou kindly in thy arms hast borne, / Thy dust shall rest, nor be forgot, / Till Death shall call us all his own.

Sweet in thy verdant bed repose, / Thy weary limbs stretch gently there; / Thy drooping lids forever close, / No more to wake to toil or care.

And when the sacramental throng / Thou oft hast mingled humbly in, / Shall sing their Hallelujah song, /Redeemed from every earthly sin.

Thou, all cleansed from thine ebon line, / In glorious raiment, white and fair, / Shall swell the sweet Hosanna too, / And wave thy palms forever there.

Norwich, Sept. 8, 1849
