Soldier's Letter, Civil War, May 1864

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, May 25, 1864

Capt. Vaughan's Co., 22d Cavalry

Headquarters 22d N.Y. Vol. Cavalry, City of Fredericksburg, Va., May 13, 1864

John F. Hubbard, Jr., Ed. Chenango Union:

Dear Sir:  In behalf of those interested, I herewith enclose to you, for publication in your paper, the names of those now missing from my Company, in the 22d N.Y. Cavalry regiment, which are as follows:

Sergt, James M. Weeded, Sergt. Henry Gartsee, Sergt. Henry Swan, Sergt, Charles H. Goedsell, Sergt. Fayette L. York, Corp. Horatio N. Platt, Nelson C. Mian, Calvin Bentley, Lamont Burdick, Charles H. Cadwell, Birdsall Cummings, Henry Finch, Jonas Finch, William H. Hulet, David Stellrecht, William H. Van Steenburgh, Ira O. Franklin, James H. Townsend, David C. White, Napoleon B. White (supposed to be dead)

We have left of this Company over fifty men, it being still one of the largest companies in the Regiment.  The Regiment guarded, and was the only Regiment guarding, the extreme right of the Army of the Potomac, for two days, and has the name of doing its duty well. The officers of this Company acted bravely, and have received great praise therefor.  Three Companies (this one included) were, by order, dismounted and advanced as skirmishers; but by a large force of rebels, and rebel artillery, were driven back, losing their horses and the above named men.  It was really a very hard fight.  You have of course heard all the particulars of the fight, ere this reaches you, so I will close.

We received this P.M. the first mail since leaving Washington.  The boys are in the best of spirits.

Yours, very Respectfully, H.S. Vaughan, Capt. Co. L, 22d N.Y. Cavalry
