Obituaries (August 25)

Marshall Curlhair, for many years a resident of this village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], died at his home on Pruyne Hill Friday morning from complication of diseases, aged 62 years.  Mr. Curlhair was born in Maine, N.Y. and spent his younger days at that place.  He married Cora Johnson in 1880.  They moved to Binghamton where they resided about nine years then came to Bainbridge in 1893 and found employment in the sled factory until it was burned.  He then worked for C.C. Hovey and then came to the Separator Co., where he has been employed twenty years.  He was a man well liked and honorable and upright in all his dealings.  He was an exempt member of the Roberts Hose company.  Mr. Curlhair is survived by his wife, mother and one daughter, Mrs. Martha Andrews.  The funeral was held Sunday, p.m. from the home, Rev. S.R. Bigger officiating and burial in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, NY].  The Separator force and Roberts Hose company attended in a body.  [Bainbridge Republican, Jan. 20, 1921]

R.R. Church a lifelong and highly respected resident of this place [Afton, Chenango Co., NY] died at his home Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock.  He was stricken with paralysis about two weeks ago.  Mr. Church was 72 years of age.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Chloa Church; five sons, Arthur of Leeds, North Dakota; Henry, Levi and Chas. of Binghamton, and Richard Jr., a student in Union College Schenectady; by one daughter Grace Church a teacher in White Plains and by several grandchildren.  The funeral was held Tuesday, afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Burial was in East Side cemetery [Afton, NY].  Services were conducted by the Masons, Dr. J.J. Francis being the pastor at the house.  [Bainbridge Republican, Jan. 27, 1921]

George L. VanDerVeer, a native of Springfield Center but for the past eight years a prominent citizen of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], died Friday after four weeks' illness at the Norwich Memorial hospital.  He was 43 years of age and ever since coming to Norwich had been advertising manager for the Pharmacal company.  His wife and one daughter survive him, also his mother Mrs. George W. VanDerVeer, and his sister Mrs. Reed Miller of New York.  [Bainbridge Republican, Feb. 10, 1921]

At the home of his nephew, Walter Davis, in Gilbertsville [Otsego Co., NY], Judson K. Davis passed away last Saturday morning.  Mr. Davis was well known and highly respected in his town where for many years he resided up to the time of his removal to Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], after the death of his wife, and in which place he took up his residence with his daughter, Mrs. Ira Sargeant.  About three months ago he came back to the valley and took up his residence with his nephew, Walter Davis, in whose home death overtook him.  Judson Davis was born in Middlefield, Thursday, June 12, 1845, and was 75 years 7 months and 23 days of age.  He was the son of John K. and Phoebe Howe Davis.  Judson Davis saw service through out the entire five years of Civil War, in Company G, 152d Regiment, and for years until its disbanding was a member of the local G.A.R. post.  He is survived by three children, Homer Davis of Morris, William Davis of Sidney and Mrs. Ira Sargeant of Bainbridge; two brothers, William Davis of Bainbridge and Warren Davis of Gilbertsville; and by three sisters, Mrs. Irving Bennett of Sidney and Mrs. Lucy Perkins and Mrs. Hubert Sweet of Morris.  The funeral services were held in the M.E. church in Gilbertsville this Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev.  H.E. Brooks officiating.  interment will be in beautiful Hillington--Morris Chronicle,  of Feb. 9, 1921 [Bainbridge Republican,  Feb. 17, 1921]
 
The death of Herbert H. Morley occurred at his home in Little Falls Sunday night following an operation for adenoids and the removal of tonsils, septic poison developing.  The funeral (Masonic) was held at Norwich Wednesday February 23, at 2 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Stewart, Mrs. Morley's parents.  He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Ruth 13 years of age.  The Morleys were former residents of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] being engaged in the creamery business in which he was an expert, also in the meat business.  He is spoken of in the very highest terms for his industry, honesty, a good neighbor and friend.  He was a man who was interested and posted on history and current events and a very pleasing and instructive conversationalist.  He was a member of the Bainbridge Masonic fraternity.  [Bainbridge Republican, Feb. 24, 1921]

Carolyn Burton, 4-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Burton of Chatham died in the Albany City Hospital early Monday morning after an illness of several weeks.  Funeral services will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 o'clock in St. Peter's Episcopal church, Bainbridge, with the Rev. James E. Wolfe officiating.  Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY].  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Jan. 8, 1948]
