NEWTON:  In Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], June 26th, Mary F. [Newton], wife of Charles G. Newton, aged 21 years, 1 month and 4 days.

DUTCHER:  In Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], May 30th, Mrs. Eleanor Dutcher, relict of Isaac Dutcher, aged 87 years.

BRIGHAM:  In Greene [Chenango Co., NY], June 13th, Mrs. Mary E. Brigham, aged 37 years ad 8 months.

LOOMIS:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], June 21st, Mr. Edward Loomis.

MOORE:  In East McDonough [Chenango Co., NY], June 18th, Mr. Ira S. Moore, aged 41 years.

POWELL:  In Richford, Tioga Co., N.Y. at the residence of his son, Dr. Elijah Powell, Jr., June 17th, Elijah Powell, Esq., of Pharsalia [Chenango Co., NY], in full possession of all his mental faculties, at the advanced age of 98 years.  Mr. Powell was one of the first settlers in Pharsalia.  He was honest, industrious, and very temperate through life, and sustained a good moral character.  He held the office of Justice of the Peace, under the old appointing power, a number of years.  His remains were conveyed to East Pharsalia for interment; and the funeral, on the 19th inst. was attended by a numerous concourse of friends and relatives which is a sure indication of the esteem in which he was held.

MUDGE:  In Mt. Upton [Chenango Co., NY], March 22d, of scarlet fever, George Watson [Mudge], only son of George and Sarah Mudge, aged 2 years.

He was too beautiful to die, / Too fair to lay beneath the sod; /Thus did our hearts in anguish cry, / While smarting 'neath the chastening rod.

The house is very lone and still, / We miss the tiny pattering feet, / The voice of love that used to fill / Our hearts with rapture pure and sweet.

Yet now a fairer house on high / Claims the bright form we loved so well, / And tenderer love is his than ours, / For he has gone with God to dwell.

So, to that bright and heavenly home / With prayerful steps we onward move, / And when we cease on earth to roam, / We'll meet our angel boy above.   K.J.R.

Sad and Fatal Accident

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, June 30, 1869

About eight o'clock on Monday evening of this week, Thomas Ryan came to his death by drowning, in Mead's Pond, about two miles north of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY].  It appears that three carpenters, who were at work on a building for Mr. Charles Hall in the vicinity of the pond, accompanied by Ryan and a son of Mr. Hall, went out in a boat to take a ride on the pond.  The boat leaked considerably, but no danger was apprehended until they got about in the center of the pond, when, either through carelessness or fright, the boat was capsized, and they were all precipitated into the water.  We are informed that they all got hold of the boat and could all have been rescued, had not Ryan left the boat with the declared intention of swimming to the shore.  He was urged by his companions to cling to the boat, but disregarding their advice, he struck out for the shore, and when about half-way between the boat and shore became exhausted and sank in the water, probably from the effects of cramp.  His body was recovered about twelve o'clock the same night.

Ryan was a respectable man, about forty years of age, and leaves a wife and two small children to mourn his loss.  He resided near the south end of the pond and owned a house and two or three acres of land.
