Fatal Accident on the Midland

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, May 4, 1870

An accident occurred on the Midland railroad track in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Wednesday evening of last week, which caused the instant death of a Polish Jew peddler named Adolph Shalasky, aged about 24 years.  The facts of the case, as elicited at the Coroner's inquest, are substantially as follows:

Shalasky, in company with another peddler, named Abraham, came in on the 2 o'clock train from Oneida, on the afternoon of the occurrence, and put up at Saftenberger's hotel, near the depot.  Towards evening they strolled down the road towards the roundhouse, and had just left a Swedish residence east of the track, and were recrossing the road, when the construction train came up from the south.  moving to a switch north of the round house, the gravel train was switched off on a side track leading to the gravel pit, the engine (Fulton, no. 10) keeping on the main track, and backing slowly along towards the round house.  Just at this time the two peddlers attempted to cross the track, and seeing the gravel train on the side track, they supposed the engine still connected with the train; and while standing in that position, the deceased having just stepped upon the track, and his friend standing close beside him, with their backs toward the approaching engine, they were struck by the tender. Shalasky was knocked down, his head falling upon a rail, when the wheels passed over it, severing the top of his head just above the eyes.  His companion was also struck by the tender, but was fortunately at a sufficient distance to escape.

The remains were gathered up and placed in a coffin; and on Thursday morning Coroner Avery held an inquest at the Central Hotel, nearby.  We give the evidence of the friend of the deceased:

Casper Abraham sworn:  I am a peddler; have known Adolph Shalasky four months; first saw him at Syracuse; have traveled with him since Monday last; he was traveling for the same men with myself; we bought our goods of the same persons in Syracuse, S.&B. Forgotston; he had no money; I paid his fare from Syracuse here.  I was walking with him last evening, north side of roundhouse, between six and seven o'clock; as the train passed going north, we were talking with some Swedes on the railroad track; did not see the engine when it backed up; I was hit by the tender as it backed up; the engine stopped after passing over his body, twelve feet. Deceased has no relatives in this country.

The engineer, fireman and brakeman in the engine were sworn, and their testimony, corroborated by that of others who were in the vicinity of the accident, was entirely satisfactory to the jury and all present, that the engine was going at moderate rate of speed, from four to six miles an hour, that when the men were seen near the track, the whistle was blown, and every effort made to avoid the accident.  In fact, so quickly was the engine stopped that it did not pass entirely over the body, which was taken out from under it.  The verdict of the jury was in accordance with the evidence.

The parties in Syracuse, of whom the peddlers procured their goods, were telegraphed to, and arrived during the day; and after arranging matters here, they took charge of the corpse, and, with the survivor, left on the 4 P.M. train for Syracuse, on Thursday.
