In Greene [Chenango Co., NY], on Thursday the 4th instant, Mr. Daniel Vine, aged about 18 years. [Apr. 10, 1833]
In this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on the 10th inst. after an illness of three weeks, Mrs. Ruamy Wells, consort of Mathew O. Wells, and daughter of James Packer, aged 19 years. The friends and relatives of the deceased will long lament their inestimable loss. She possessed an amiable disposition, always manifesting evidence of sincere thanks to God in health, a perfect example of Christian fortitude in sickness, and an entire resignation to her Maker's will in her last illness. At thirteen years of age, having been bereft of an affectionate mother, she took upon herself the maternal care of her Father's family, consisting of three brothers elder and one brother and four sisters younger than herself. At the age of seventeen, she became a member of the Baptist church, and has ever adorned her profession by an exemplary life fit for any or for all to follow. At nineteen she was untied to Mr. Wells by the marriage tie which happy union was permitted by Providence to last but five weeks, when she was called from this world, leaving a disconsolate husband, affectionate parents and eight brothers and sisters to lament their loss. [Apr. 17, 1833]
In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on the 10th inst., John Riddle, esq. aged 49 years. Mr. R. was supervisor of Preston at the time of his death. A correspondent says "He has been a resident of this town for more than twenty years, was an amiable and peaceable man, has filled various offices in town with honor. His acquaintance was extensive, and he had as few enemies perhaps as any other man. He was a warm friend, a kind and affectionate husband and father, and his family have met with an irreparable loss. His death came upon us so suddenly, that it made every countenance look sad. He was sick only about two days, and the immediate cause of his death was in consequence of taking too large a dose of Bloodroot and Colchicum. But he is gone, therefore the word speaks still louder. "Be ye also ready." [May 22, 1833]
In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on the 17th inst., very suddenly, Mr. Stephen Ballou, a respectable citizen, aged 64 years. We understand Mr. B. died in a fit of apoplexy. [May 22, 1833]
In Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], on the 19th ult., Mrs. Phebe Guthrie, wife of Joseph Guthrie, aged 68 years. [June 5, 1833]
At Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], on monday morning last, Elias Babcock, Esq., aged about 55 years. Mr. B. was one of the early settlers of the town of Sherburne, and for the last thirty years of his life an active and enterprising merchant. By close attention to business and a rigid economy, he had amassed a large fortune and at his death was one of the most wealthy capitalists of our county. He was in some respects peculiar and eccentric in his habits. He was true in his friendships, and charitable to the poor, an indulgent landlord and a lenient creditor, and in the recollection of these virtues, his frailties (all mankind have their frailties) will be forgotten.
