Lynn Cogshall, 42, died Sunday as a result of wounds received Saturday in gun battle with seven members of Troop C State Police on the farm of his parents near West Laurens in Otsego County.  Cogshall withstood the troopers for eight hours with two shotgun after they had been called to investigate reports he had been beating his mother, Mrs. William Cogshall.  District Attorney Livingston S. Latham said Cogshall had been released recently at Binghamton State  Hospital.  Investigators said Cogshall forced his parents from their home at the point of a gun and then at about 8:30 a.m. barricaded himself in the house.  He also shot at neighbors who were attracted to the scene of the gunfire.  When state police arrived, he poured five deer slugs into one of the unoccupied troop cars.  Police opened fire and used tear gas when the farmer's son refused to leave his shelter.  He finally succumbed to wounds in the right groin and left wrist.  Taken to Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, he died Sunday evening.  Records reveal the victim had had several brushes with the law, on charges of forgery, burglary, chicken theft and leaving the scene of an accident.  Oneonta police said they shot him in the leg in 1933 while pursuing him through Unadilla for arrest on a forgery charge.  He was released at Binghamton State Hospital in November, according to investigators.  Inspector Ernest Maynard of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation had command of the four B.C.I. members and two uniformed troopers who participated in the Saturday siege.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, Jan. 27, 1944]
