Power Plant Erection to Start Soon, 1944

Erection of Electric Plant to Start Soon
Bainbridge News & Republican, Mar. 16, 1944

An additional 44,000 horsepower of electric generating capacity for the Central New York area as well as permanent employment for about 50 persons is expected to result from the construction of a steam electric generating plant near Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] by the New York State Electric and Gas Corp.

Part of a $10,000,000 construction program planned by the corporation in 1941, the Bainbridge power plant will probably be completed in the summer of 1945, W.B. Goudey, vice-president and divisional manager of the corporation, said today.

Located about one mile south of Bainbridge on the east side of Route 7, the 25-acre site for the plant includes land from the Warner Taylor and Adna Talcott farms.

Preliminary work for the construction, including a double-track railroad spur from the Delaware and Hudson Railroad and filling work, is already nearing completion and the contract for construction of the plant is expected to be let within two weeks with actual work scheduled to start early this spring, Mr. Goudey said.

Need for this plant was established by the expansion of area industries, Mr. Goudey explained, and Bainbridge was elected as the site because it is a logical load center.  The site is at a point on the Unadilla River where there is adequate water supply, he said.  In addition, its proximity to the D.&H. Railroad and the anthracite mine fields make it an excellent location since the plant will be the company's first power station to use hard coal, he pointed out.

The plant will house a 44,000 [horsepower generator], economizers, superheaters, and other latest features for most efficient production of steam.  Other modern improvements include a hydrogen cooling system which increases the generating efficiency as well as a modern machine shop, chemical laboratory and comfortable workmen's quarters, Mr. Goudey said.

"In addition to the building of the railroad spur and the erection of the modern power house, the Bainbridge project will entail building a 40,000-kilowatt substation and connections with our high tension line at Sidney and a 114,000-kilowatt substation and connection line to tie in with our high tension system at Norwich," the division al manager explained.

The plant will supply local needs now being taken care of from Binghamton, Niagara, Hudson and hydro-plants at Colliers and Oneonta with the surplus distributed throughout the system, Mr. Goudey said.

Immediate effects of the project are already being felt by Bainbridge since a survey is being made in the village to find housing facilities for about 200 men who are expected to be employed this summer on the plant construction job.--Binghamton Press
