TEFFT: In Edmeston, Otsego Co. [NY], September 16th, Stanton Tefft, aged 73 years.
Mr. Tefft was born at Stonington, Connecticut, June 12, 1795. When a young man he came to Edmeston and settled upon a wild tract of land, which he cleared up with his own hands. He was a man of sound judgment and noted for his strict integrity and fair d...ing among men. In business or in politics he was always the friend of the poor and the oppressed and against the oppressor, and to the last rejoiced in the consciousness that he had never cast a vote against the helpless or downtrodden. He raised a family of seven children, and faithfully instilled into their youthful minds the principles of true manliness and practical lessons of life. About a year before his death, he became aware that he could not live long, sold his farm and arranged his business accordingly. He spent a part of last winter in this village with his sons, Henry M. and Calvin Tefft. In his life he ever exemplified the principles of practical Christianity and died in the triumphs of faith. His last words to his weeping children were, "Do not hold me here, let me go." By his death his children have lost a kind parent, the church a faithful member, and those who knew him, an earnest friend.
