Mr. Nathan Bundy, the gentlemanly telegraph operator at the D.L.&W. Depot, took a step in the right direction last Wednesday, and took unto himself a wife in the person of Miss Ella Hull, an accomplished young lady. In Memoriam: A correspondent in Chautauqua County sends us a copy of the Jamestown Daily Democrat, of the 7th inst., which contains an announcement of the death in Fluvanna, September 27th of Mr. Asel Smiley, aged 64 years. Our correspondent adds that William Smiley, father of the deceased, came into Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] in 1790 or 1791, and located the Breed farm, south of this village, and after partially reclaiming it, sold out to Elias Breed in 1808 or 1809. The family then removed to Chautauqua County, Asel being at the time a babe of eight months. For a number of years previous to his death, the deceased held the position of Justice of the Peace of his town and was a highly respected citizen.

Death
DEITZ: In Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY], Oct. 11, Mr. John P. Deitz, aged 62 years. [Chenango Telegraph, Oct. 16, 1873]
Again, it devolves upon us to announce the death of a valued citizen: John P. Dietz expired at his residence in this village, on Thursday morning last, at the age of 60 years. Mr. Dietz had been an invalid for many months but was thought to be slowly mending in health until about a week before his death, when a sudden relapse occurred, and from that to the close of his life his sufferings were intense. His native place was Berne, Albany Co., N.Y., but for about forty years, with only a brief interval, he has been a resident of Sherburne, during which time he has enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his fellow townsmen in a high degree. It was not his good fortune to accumulate largely of this world's goods, but he was rich in the better sense of possessing a conscience void of offense, and the good will of his fellow men. His retiring, gentle and kindly nature was calculated to win friends, and provoked no enmity. At different times in his life, he has held local offices of public trust, and at the time of his death was Town Clerk and Deputy Postmaster, in all of which he served with unquestioned fidelity, performing the duties with credit to himself and satisfaction to the public. He will be missed in the business transactions of the town, but chiefly will he be missed from the home circle of which he was the loved center.
His funeral was attended at the Episcopal Church on Monday afternoon, when an unusually large concourse of people assembled to testify their respect for the memory of the deceased and manifest their sympathy for the bereaved friends.

News Item
On Monday of this week, while the funeral procession of Mr. George Blanchard was ascending the hill in West Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY], the head team stopped for some reason which necessitated a stoppage of the teams following, and the last convey to which was hitched a spirited young horse owned by Mr. Frank Davis, living near Union Valley, was tipped bottom side into the ditch, with Mr. Davis under it. The gentleman in the carriage in front jumped out and caught the animal by the bit, and succeeded in throwing him on his side, but he plunged and pitched about in a furious manner, tumbling the wagon over himself several times. He was soon brought under subjection, however, and hitched to another vehicle, and Mr. Davis followed in the procession as before. Strange to say, no one was injured, and the damage to the buggy was slight.
