Last Friday morning Jonathan Bush, of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], quietly passed away from this life at the advanced age of 82 years. He was one of the pioneers of this county, having moved upon the place where he passed his last days, over 50 years ago. He was nearly all his life a minister of the gospel, and was much esteemed by his large circle of acquaintances. He leaves a widow nearly 82 years of age, and three sons. He was the father of Richard Bush, of this town. The funeral was held at his late residence, last Sunday, Rev. George A. Place, officiating, and his remains were interred at Ives' Settlement [Guilford, NY]
BUSH: Mrs. Phebe Bush, widow of the Rev. Jonathan Bush, a local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church, died in the town of Guilford, N.Y. [Chenango Co.], Dec. 17, 1892. She was eighty-eight years and seven months old, and had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church from her youth, maintaining a Christian character unsullied until her death. Her children treasure her memory with gratitude. She was active and energetic until a few days before her death. Her funeral was attended by the writer, at her late home, where a large concourse of friends and her late home, where a large concourse of friends and neighbors assembled to pay a tribute to their departed friend.
Mrs. Mary E. Bennett, wife of Hubert L Bennett died suddenly Sunday morning last. She was found lying on the floor of her room at six o'clock in the morning. Mr. Bennett missed her and in searching the house discovered her by the bed as she had evidently fallen, and when found life had left her. She had been in poor health for a number of years which resulted in heart failure. Mrs. Bennett had long been a resident of Bainbridge, passing her entire life here. She was 65 years old. Her first husband was Eli Bennett who died several years ago. In February 1922 she married Hubert Bennett a brother, and they resided on Pearl street [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY]. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the house, the Rev. M.V. Williams officiating. Burial was in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, NY]. Beside her husband she is survived by one son S.J. Bennett of Oneonta, one brother C.E. Pettys of this village, one step son Raymond Bennett; two step daughters, Mrs. Hobert Darlin and Mrs. Charles Wayman, and several nieces and nephews. Lewis Mack, of South Edmeston [Otsego Co., NY], farmer, 45 years of age, was instantly killed about 6 o'clock Thursday night when the automobile in which he and his family were returning from the Morris fair, turned turtle, on the highway between New Berlin and Morris. Mrs. Mack and three children, passengers in the car, escaped with only slight injuries. They were taken to the office of Dr. E.A. Hammond at New Berlin. Mack sustained a fracture at the base of the skull, his death occurring before help reached him. The accident occurred on a slight grade in the road near the farm of Lewis Holden, six miles from Morris. It is not known how it happened, but it is thought that Mr. Mack lost control of the machine, a 1916 Cadillac touring. He was driving at a fast rate of speed just before the car tipped over pinning him underneath. [Bainbridge Republican, Oct. 18, 1923]
Residents of Bainbridge will very pleasantly remember Rev. John Cavanaugh, who died on Monday, Oct. 2, at his home in White Haven, Pa., Mr. Cavanaugh once lived in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY] and his addresses on the street corners were remarkably forceful, eloquent and convincing. He was for three years, from 1918 to 1921, pastor of the Free Methodist church at Walton. In 1922 he was transferred to White Haven. He was about 82 years of age and leaves a wife and one daughter. Mr. Cavanaugh was a southerner by birth and served in the Confederate army in the Civil war, losing his right arm in action. When a young man of thirty he became converted and has ever since devoted his life to preaching the gospel, first as an evangelist in the Methodist faith, and for the past forty years as a preacher in the Free Methodist denomination. Mr. Cavanaugh was best known as a street exhorter, often speaking ten to twenty times a day upon the streets of the villages where he resided or which he visited. On Saturday night, Oct. 20, 1923, Almeda Rosaline Davis Hornshu passed from tis life of pain and sorrow to the home beyond where peace and rest are found, Mrs. Hornshu had been in poor health for a long time and the past year was one of severe suffering. Deceased was born in the town of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], April 29, 1856, and lived nearly all her life on the farm where she died. Besides her husband, Albert A Hornshu she is survived by one niece, Evva Shapley of this place one nephew, Fred A. Shapley of San Diego, Cal. The funeral service was held at her late home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev. M.V. Wiliams officiating. The bearers were Adel Jones, Charles Sweet, Winfield Price, and George Ferguson. Mrs. Sophrona Payne aged 72 years died at her home on Bixby street [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY] Saturday after a long period of suffering from ill health, due to which condition the family moved from the farm to the village the latter part of August. On Tuesday of this week would have been the 51st anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Payne's wedding. During these years they have resided in Bainbridge. Beside her husband Lavern Payne Sr. she is survived by one daughter Mrs. Clayton Sweet of Searles Hill, two sons Hiram and Lavern Jr., also five granddaughters: Lillian and Margaret Payne, Dorothy and Donald Sweet and Mrs. Leland Jones of Rochester and one great granddaughter; a sister Mrs. Edgar Davis of Afton and brother Jerome Broad of Nebraska, five nephews: Rev. Chas. Davis of Rochester, Butler Payne of Afton, Frank and Howard Payne of this village, Howard Kneeland of Chadwick Mills; seven nieces: Mrs. Thomas Kelleher, Mrs. Julien Corbin of Bainbridge, Mrs. A.L. Albrecht of Sidney, Mrs. A. Pezzella, Yatesville, Pa., Mrs. Elbert Herring of Oneonta, Mrs. Allen Breffle, Rochester, Mrs. C.N. Rockwell, Indiana. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, burial in Green lawn Cemetery, Rev. M.V. Williams officiating. [Bainbridge Republican, Nov. 8, 1923]
