Obituaries (June 29)

Arthur G. Russell, a well-known farmer of Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], passed away at his home Tuesday morning, May 25, at the age of 66.  He had been in failing health for the past two years but on Jan. 10 his condition grew worse, confining him to his home until his death.  He was born in Delhi [Delaware Co., NY], Aug. 19, 1876, the son of George and Fannie (More) Russell.  He moved to Sidney in his early boyhood with his parents where he lived until 26 years ago when he bought the farm where he resided at the time of his death  On Mar. 21, 1912 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Maude Weight Luther and to them were born two children, Nellie G. and Agnes M.  He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  He is survived by his wife and the above daughters mentioned, two step-daughters.  Mrs. Winn E. Barnes, of Maryland, and Mrs. Perry Shaver, of Sidney Center; one sister, Mrs. M.D. Wrgiht, of Binghamton, and 11 step-grandchildren.  The funeral was held at Colwell's Chapel on Friday with the Rev. John L. Sweet died Saturday, May 29, after an illness of several months.  He was born in Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], the son of Roland and Mary (Miller) Sweet, July 27, 1858.  He lived in Coventry until 1898 when he moved to Bainbridge.  Mr. Sweet was engaged in dairy farming most of his life, but worked in the village his latter years.  Since the death of his wife in 1919, he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. J.E. Herrick.  His son, Ralph Sweet, died in 1908, at the age of 36.  Besides his daughter he is survived by one sister, Mrs. S.B. Blakeslee; a grandson, J. Robert Herrick, and nephews and nieces.  The Rev. R. Lewis Johnson conducted the funeral service which was held in Colwell's Chapel, Tuesday, June 1.  Bearers were four nephews, Raymond Parsons, Frank Blakeslee, W.H. Sweet and L.O. Sweet.  Burial was in the family plot at Glenwood Cemetery, Afton.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, June 10, 1943]
 
Ellsworth B. Matteson, a resident of the Town of Coventry [Chenango Co., NY] for over 60 years, passed to his Heavenly Home Thursday, May 13, at the age of 79 years.  Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Erford H. Lyon, Sunday, May 16, with interment in the Coventryville Cemetery; the Rev. Schulz, of Greene, officiating.  The many and beautiful floral tributes expressed the love and esteem of his many friends.  Surviving are the two daughters, Mrs. Erford Lyon, of Coventryville, and Mabel Lyon, of Cincinnatus; a brother, James, of Jersey City, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. Grace Barstow, of Brighton, Colo.; and several nephews and nieces.  Mr. Matteson was born in the Town of Masonville [Delaware Co., NY] May 29, 1863, the son of Margaret Ward and Richard Morgan Matteson.  He came to Coventry in 1880 and in 1889 was united in marriage to Fannie L. Benedict, daughter of the late Henry and Lomira Benedict, of Coventryville.  Mr. Matteson has been a member of the Congregational Church of Coventryville for 56 years, serving faithfully in various capacities.  In early years he was a member of the local P. of H. and Red Men, and until health would not permit, served his town and community by holding of office and loyal interest.  In his home life his faith exemplified by patience and cheery words, which will be a cherished memory to those who mourn their loss.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, June 24, 1943]
