Obituaries (June 30)

Mrs. Lucinda M. Tompkins, 83, widow of James E. Tompkins, formerly of Windsor [Broome Co., NY], died Saturday at the Charles Wilson Memorial Hospital after several weeks' illness.  She is survivied by two daughters, Mrs. Samuel J. Halsey and Mrs. Pearl Bronson, both of Johnson City; a son, Louis E Tompkins, of Binghamton; a sister, Mrs. William Clark, of McClure.  She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Windsor, Tuesday.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, June 24, 1943]

Mrs. James S. Denham, of Walton [Delaware Co., NY], passed away in the Fox Hospital at Oneonta, June 12, following an operation.  She had been in the hospital 13 days.  Mrs. Denham was born at Hale Eddy, Sept. 9, 1897, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Olin Connally.  She was united in marriage to James Denham.  the couple resided in Cadosia until nine years ago, when they moved to Walton.  She was a woman who was loved by her immediate family and respected by all who knew her.  Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J. Francis Brown, of Walton, and two grandchildren.  The funeral was held Tuesday morning in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, of which she was a member.  Burial was in the Walton Cemetery.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, June 24, 1943]

News of the death of the Rev. T. Ashton Rich, 57, pastor of the Waverly Methodist Church, was heard with regret by his many friends in Unadilla, where he was pastor of the Methodist Church in 1935.  He was starting his fifth year at Waverly [Tioga Co., NY].  He was attending a theatre Monday night and in the middle of the performance slumped in his seat.  He was taken to the Tioga General Hospital, but was pronounced dead on his arrival.  Funeral services were held Friday in the Waverly Methodist Church.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, June 24, 1943]

Lieutenant George Hyde Clarke, Jr., of the Army Air Forces, eldest son of Mrs. S. Beach Cooke, of New York City and Cooperstown, and of George Hyde Clarke, of Hyde Hall, Cooperstown, was killed Thursday of last week in an accident at Weed, Calif, while completing training for combat with the 34th Bombing Group, 7th Squadron.  He was 22 years old.  [Bainbridge News & Republican, June 24, 1943]

Mr. Thomas P. Hicks, of this village, received word from England last week, of the death of his mother.  Mrs. Hicks made a visit to this place about seven years ago.  We find the following in regard to her in the Chenango Union:  "In our obituary column will be found the announcement of the death, at her home in England, of Mrs. Elizabeth Hicks, age 92 years.  Many of our citizens will recollect the visit made to this village a number of years since, by the venerable lady accompanied by her son, the late John P. Hicks, with whose family she passed several months very pleasantly, when she returned to her native country.  While here many agreeable acquaintances were made and friendships formed between the aged stranger and our townspeople, and her death will cause a feeling of sadness among those who knew her best."  [Bainbridge Republican, Mar. 11, 1876]

The remains of Mrs. Henry Jewell were brought from Colesville [Broome Co., NY] and interred at Guilford Centre [Chenango Co., NY], on the 5th inst.  Mrs. Jewell was a daughter of Clark Smith, west of our place, and after the death of her husband, some years since, removed to Colesville, where she resided at the time of her death.  She was much respected by all who knew her.  [Bainbridge Republican, Mar. 11, 1876]

Stephen Isbell, a native, and until some eight years ago a resident of our town [Guilford, Chenango Co., NY] died at Oxford, where he was living, on the 2d inst.  His health had been feeble for years, yet he was always industrious.  He was nearly the last of a once large family of brothers and sisters.  He was about sixty years of age, and leaves a wife, son and daughter to mourn his loss.  [Bainbridge Republican, Mar. 11, 1876]

In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY] on the 27th ult., of consumption, Mr. Leander B. Foote, aged 48 years.  [Chenango Union, Oct. 14, 1863]

In Greene, on the 23d ult., of apoplexy, Mrs. Thirza Baker, wife of Joseph Baker. [Chenango Union, Oct. 14, 1863]

At Little Falls [Herkimer Co., NY], on the 1st inst.  Mrs. Julia A., wife of John L. Simonds, and daughter of Nelson Deming, of New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], in the 27th year of her age.  [Chenango Union, Oct. 14, 1863]
