Mr. & Mrs. Henry D. Crain
Their completion of 50 years of wedded life was fittingly celebrated by about 50 friends of Mr. and Mr.s Henry D. Crain who gathered at their home on Canasawacta street [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] Saturday evening last and surprised the venerable couple upon their golden anniversary. Both Mr. and Mrs. Crain were born in the town of Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], the former on August 10, 1846, and the latter on February 16, 1846. Mr. Crain is the son of Daniel and Sara Crain and Mrs. Crain is a daughter of Clennam and Amy Aldrich. They were married November 29, 1863, and continued to make their residence in Plymouth until two years ago when they came to Norwich. Mr. Crain is a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted in January 1864, only a few weeks after taking to himself a bride. He was a member of the twenty-second New York Cavalry and had passed safely through several engagements, when he was wounded so severely in the shoulder in the battle of Fisher's Hill that he was confined to the hospital for some time before being sent home. Among the anniversary gifts was a handsome couch from a few of their friends and a berry set from fellow comrades of Mr. Crain in Smith Post, GA.R. Mr. and Mrs. Crain have been bereft of their own children, but they have two grandchildren, Emmet Aldrich and Mrs. Leigh Fleming, both residents of Norwich. Among the out of town friends present at the happy anniversary gathering were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cushman, Mr. and Mrs. William Guile and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Grover, of Plymouth; Mr. and Mrs. Millard Fleming, Messrs. Clay and Floyd Fleming, of Oxford.
