Marvin A. Smith

1844 - 1910

 Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Marvin A. Smith died suddenly Wednesday forenoon at his residence on Rexford street, aged 65.  His health had been failing for the past 18 years, and the death of Mrs. Smith which occurred May 15, 1909, was a sad shock to him.  Mr. Smith was born in Guilford [Chenango Co., NY] on October 12, 1844, the son of Rufus and Hannah Lucas Smith.  He had been a resident of Norwich for 30 years.  He learned the cooper's trade which he followed as long as profitable and then turned his attention to carpenter work. At the age of 19 he enlisted in Company G of the Eighth New York Cavalry, and served three years as commissary sergeant, making a creditable record.  he was a member of Smith Post, G.A.R., and stood well among his comrades.  December 16, 1865, Mr. Smith married Miss Delia Furman, of Sherburne, who died last May, There are surviving two daughters, Leah Smith and Mrs. Glen Curtis, and four sons, Louis, Samuel, Fay and Walter, all residents of Norwich, besides three brothers, William, of Geneva, Ill.; John, of McHenry, Ill., and Rufus, of Guilford, and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Fairchild, of Edmeston, and Mrs. P.S. Powers, of Brooklyn.  Funeral services will be held Saturday forenoon at 11, burial taking place at Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], in charge of the G.A.R.

 

Sarah Emily (Davis) Aylesworth

Sarah Emily Davis, wife of Emery Aylesworth, of this village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], died at her home on Front street, Friday afternoon as the sun was setting, aged 61 years.  Mrs. Aylesworth had been in declining health for two years but able to look after her family and the necessary domestic matters until two months ago, when a serious stomach trouble added to the insidious disease, locomotor ataxia, that had gradually been gaining influence over her for years, obliged her to take to her bed.  She lay in an unconscious state from Monday until the Friday she died.  Mrs. Aylesworth enjoyed life and wanted to live but as the weeks wore on she became aware that death was creeping upon her and she made preparations to die.  She calmly gave directions in regard to her funeral, selecting the text to be used which was, “Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man cometh.” Matt 24:44.  She wished her four children, Mrs. Martin Riley, Mrs. H.B. Davenport with husbands and Messrs. Eddy and William Aylesworth to be her pall-bearers.  The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Odell officiating.  The minister made a beautiful address using the text Mrs. Aylesworth had chosen.  The house was filled with neighbors and friends.  Among the flowers contributed was a beautiful cross from the employees of the D. & H. shops in Oneonta.  The burial was in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, NY].  Mrs. Aylesworth was born in Greene [Chenango Co., NY] and grew to womanhood there.  She attended the village school, graduated and taught several years prior to her marriage to Mr. Aylesworth, which occurred forty years ago.  Her husband was a prosperous farmer in West Bainbridge, where they resided until coming to Bainbridge twenty-one years ago.  The death of Mrs. Aylesworth has brought great sadness to the home circle.  Her brightness and energy and love will never be forgotten.  Her neighbors will miss her in all the neighborly associations, as well as the M.E. church of which she had been a member for many years.  Besides the husband and four children mentioned, Mrs. Aylesworth is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Yelverton, of West Bainbridge, and two brothers, Charles Davis, of Towanda, Pa., and Hiram Davis, of Corning. 

 

James M. Woods, 1842 - 1913

James M. Woods died at his home on South Broad street [Norwich, Chenango County, NY]  Friday afternoon, aged 71.  He was born in the town of Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], February 15, 1843 [sic], the son of Hiram and Lucinda Woods.  July 4, 1881, he married Lodema E. Burlison, of Sidney, who survives.  They formerly lived in Guilford but have resided in Norwich the past nine years.  Deceased was a veteran of the civil war, a member of Company K, Tenth New York Cavalry.  He was a member of the H.H. Beecher Post, G.A.R., of Bainbridge.  The funeral was held Tuesday, Rev. A.R. Burke officiating, and burial was made in Mt. Hope [Norwich, NY]

 

Simon Woods

Simon Woods, 64, passed away at the Chenango Memorial Hospital on June 26, where he had been under observation since about the first of June.  Mr. Woods was born in the town of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], Feb. 25, 1873, the son of William and Sylvia [sic] Woods.  He was a resident of this town and that of Oxford until he was 21.  He has since resided in the Town of Bainbridge on the old homestead farm for the past 27 years.  He had always been a member of the Baptist Church.  Mr. Woods was united in marriage to Miss Cora Hubbard in the town of Colesville, December 24, 1895 by Rev. Henry Hill, pastor of the Baptist church.  The funeral was held June 29 at the Colwell Chapel with the Rev. Bump, of the Guilford Methodist Church, officiating.  Interment was in Glenwood Cemetery in Afton. [Chenango Co., NY]  Survivors besides his wife are one brother, Isaac Woods, of Choconut, Pa.,;  one sister, Mrs. Dilla Scott, of Unadilla;  three sons, Merritt, Lester and Harry Woods, all of Bainbridge;  one daughter, Mrs.. Bert Utter, of North Pharsalia, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Jay Relly Smith

J. Relly Smith, 71 years old, of 27 Carhart avenue, died this morning [2 Dec. 1936] at the Charles S. Wilson Memorial hospital.  He is survived by his wife, Marosia;  a daughter, Mrs. Ray Ralston of Endicott;  four sons, Leonard, Leslie, Lawrence and Lee, of Johnson City;  a sister, Mrs. Frank Tracey of Carbondale;  a brother, Rubin Smith of Sidney and six grandchildren.  Mr. Smith was a member of the First Christian church.  The body was removed to the William R. Chase funeral home, 44 Exchange street.  Funeral arrangements will be made later.

George Reuben Smith, 1871 - 1950

George R. Smith, 79, died yesterday morning [Jan. 24, 1950] at the home of his grandson, Harrison K. Smith, 202 Johnson Circle [Broome County, NY], after a long illness.  He was born June 29, 1871, in Afton [Chenango Co., NY].  Funeral services will be held at the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Robert P. Kellerman officiating.  Burial will be in Nineveh [Broome Co., NY]  Calling hours at the chapel will be Saturday from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m.  Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hattie A. Smith of Afton;  three sons, Ernest R. of Burlington, Harry and Clifford of Carbondale, Pa.;  three daughters, Mrs. Clyde E. Walton of Guilford, Mrs. Edward Andrews and Mrs. Anthony Villeco, both of Sidney;  10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
