Narcissa (Rhodes) Gifford

1822 - 1910

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Sunday morning Narcissa, wife of James M. Gifford, died at her home on the East Side river road two miles south of Oxford village [Chenango Co., NY].  Thursday evening of last week Mrs. Gifford was taken ill with acute indigestion and failed steadily until her death.  Deceased was born in Guilford (Chenango Co., NY) May 6, 1822, the daughter of James and Olive Barnum Rhodes.  Her grandfather, who had been a sea captain, was one of the earliest settlers in the town of Guilford.  September 10, 1850 she married James M. Gifford and since that time had resided on the farm where she died.  By those who knew her she will be remembered as a lovable woman, neighborly and charitable and highly esteemed by all her acquaintances.  Mrs. Gifford was a sister of the late Dr. L.A. Rhodes, of Norwich. She is survived by her husband; one son, Ervin R. Gifford, and three daughters, Mrs. Julia Sharp, Mrs. Carrie Hovey, wife of H. Fred Hovey, of Oxford and Mary, wife of W.C. Burton of Guilford. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. C.D. Broughton, of Oxford, officiating.  Interment was made in Riverview Cemetery at Oxford.

 

Abigail Maria (Newton) Hale, 1817-1907

Mrs. Abigail Hale, widow of the late Hiram Hale, died at the home of her son, H.O. Hale, on Tuesday, aged 90 years.  She was born on the Newton farm, west of Norwich and has lived all her life in this county [Chenango Co. NY].  For the last ten years she has made her home with her son.  She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Milton W. Brown of Norwich, Mrs. Frank W. Foster, of Omaha, Neb., and one son, H.O. Hale, of Norwich.  Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 3:30, Rev. J.L. Ray officiating.

 

Louis N. Barton

Louis N. Barton, 68, former newspaper publisher and native of Afton [Chenango Co., NY] died on Sunday at his home in Roselle Park, N.J.  Mr. Barton who was a descendant of Gov. Stephen Hopkins of Rhode Island, a signer of the declaration of independence and Major William E. Barton, Revolutionary War hero, received his early training on The Afton Enterprise which was published by his father, the late Nelson E. Barton.  Mr. Barton founded Louis Barton, Inc., of Elizabeth, N.J., a novelty printing concern.  He is survived by his wife, the former Laura Bishop, a daughter, Ethel and a sister, Mrs. Arthur A. Backey.

 

Maude Adele (Moffitt) Fuller

Maude Adele Fuller, 72, former Norwich [Chenango Co., NY] resident died at the Bemis Nursing home in Hubbardsville Sunday.  She had been in failing health for a long time but had been a patient at the nursing home only three weeks.  Mrs. Fuller was born September 2, 1876, in Burlington Flats [Otsego Co., NY], the daughter of Frank and Catherine Merriman Moffitt. She had spent most of her life in Sherburne but for the last 10 years had resided in Norwich.  In 1892 she married Clad Fuller in New Berlin. She is survived by one son, Clyde Fuller, of Norwich; one brother, Guy Moffitt, of New Berlin; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Justice, of Ilion.  Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Kehoe Funeral Home in Sherburne, the Rev. William H. Eckmeyer, pastor of the Chruch of the Nazarene officiating.  Burial was in the Sherburne Quarter Cemetery.
