In Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], Feb. 13th, Mr. Jacob Bixby, aged about 70 years.
Jacob Bixby, one of our prominent citizens was buried yesterday. He died Thursday evening, after a short illness. He will be much missed by the poor--and truly I may say by all--for Uncel Jacob always had a kind word for everyone and many will drop a tear to his memory. He was about 70 years of age. Friday night Fred went to bed in the livery barn where he was employed as usual. James W. Warn, one of the proprietors, found him there in bed at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. He got up, did some work, and started for home, promising to return at 7:30 a.m. At home he had breakfast, and the breakfast dishes were placed in a pan of water in the pantry. About 8 o'clock Fred gave the alarm, saying that his mother was dead. He told Reid Collins, who went to the fourth house south of Jackson's on the same side, and notified Mrs. Malvina Walker who lives there. She went to the house and found the lady dead in the bedroom on the bed. Fred sat near the door with a handkerchief to his eyes. The entrance to the cellar is in the front part of the main room, through a trap door, the opening being just large enough to admit a man's body. The steps to the stairs are short and very steep. The trap door was open and there was a pool of blood about two inches square on the floor, a little to the left. Fred said his mother had fallen down stairs and had been killed, and that he brought her up and placed her on the bed. A number of ladies arranged the body to prepare it for the undertaker. Dr. R.E. Miller was called, but as Fred's statement appeared to be true, and the death the result of accident, he made nothing more than a superficial examination and pronounced the lady dead. She had complained of heart disease, but he had not prescribed for it. At this time it was not thought necessary to hold a coroner's inquest, although Mrs. Jackson's wounds were very severe. Mrs. Eliza Odell of Norwich, sister of deceased, was notified by telegraph. Elisha Henry Odell, who was visiting his mother at Norwich, went to Oxford with her. Mr. Odell is a deputy sheriff and detective at Canastota, where he had considerable to do in working up the case against the fire bugs. He examined the surroundings and suspected foul play. He notified Coroner Avery, who summoned a jury. The jury viewed the body, and the inquest was adjourned till Sunday afternoon at the St. James' Hotel.
The Oxford Times says: Jackson was brought before the jury and coroner, and by advice of counsel refused to say anything in regard to the manner of his mother's death. He was committed to jail to wait the action of the Grand Jury, which sits April 11th.
The theory is that Jackson had an altercation with his mother, in which he killed her, and then claimed that she fell down cellar and killed herself. She was horribly bruised and cut about the head and other portions of the body, more than she would naturally receive in falling down stairs.
