The deceased was an early resident of this town having come here at an early day. She was one of the last survivors of that body of early settlers in this region, who remember it as a wilderness, and who knew of the privations of that early period when the inhabitants were scattered and remote from each other. Possessed of a strong constitution, of industrious, simple habits, of cheerful temper, imbued with the spirit of genuine piety, Mrs. Bates lived the spirit of genuine piety. Mrs. Bates lived honored and esteemed by all who knew her. Towards the closing period of her life her mind broke down and delirium clouded her view of those blessed hopes to which for so many years she had clung. But even in her mental wanderings the habit of prayer remained to her, and we doubt not she now sees with a celestial vision Him on whom she trusted as her devine strength and redeemer.
A Remarkable Family - Davis Family Reunion
Many years ago, a Mr. Davis migrated from the Eastern States and settled in this county [Chenango Co., NY], having a farm, and keeping a public house, five miles east of Sherburne village, forty years. He raised ten children, eight boys and two girls, all of whom are still living [in 1865]. One of the sons, Reuben, still lives in this county, and the other children are scattered in different parts of the State. Mrs. H.W. Coon, of Syracuse [Onondaga Co., NY], is a daughter of Reuben Davis, and the brothers made arrangements to meet at her house, as the most central and easy point of access, for a reunion, which took place some ten days ago. The eight brothers had their photograph taken in a group. Their ages amount in the aggregate to the extraordinary sum of 526 years, being an average of 65 years and nine months each. Each of the boys remained with their father until 21 years old, and although all of them were brought up in a hotel, neither of them ever smoked or chewed tobacco, or ever was intoxicated. They are all farmers, and well off in worldly goods. Such a family is seldom raised, and less seldom meet under such circumstances after having been once scattered. One of the sisters lives in Ohio, and the other in California.
___________________________________________
The above is concluded to be about the family of Reuben and Mehitable (Saxton) Davis who settled in Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY prior to 1800. They were reported to be the parents of 13 children including 10 sons (Harry/Henry, Orlando, Horatio, Reuben Jr., George, William, Norman, Hiram, John, William 2nd) and three daughters (Fannie, Julia Ann, Mary). At the time of the 1865 reunion, ten children survived. Two sons (William & John) died in 1813 and a daughter (Fannie) died in 1829. The following was written about the family on the occasion of the Sherburne Centennial Celebration in 1893. [USGenWeb, Chenango Co., NY]
"Reuben Davis came from Somers, Conn., to Sherburne, in Feb. 1798, and settled on the farm afterwards owned by Edgar Baldwin. He lived there but a short time, then moved to where Jacob Reese now resides [in 1893], and from there to the eastern part of the town on the old turnpike leading to Columbus, and kept an Inn, where the general elections for the town were sometimes held....He had married Mehitable Sexton, a sister of Frederic Sexton, Sr. and thirteen children were born to them, ten boys and three girls. Two of the boys died young. Seven of the sons lived to be over seventy, and three to be over eighty. All were raised in a hotel and not one was ever known to be intoxicated or to use tobacco; all became men of some means. Eleven of the children married and had families...."
