Murder in Binghamton
Chenango American, Greene, NY, April 13, 1869
On Sunday morning the 11th inst., a man by the name of Blanchard, was murdered in Binghamton [Broome Co., NY]. He moved from Colesville to Binghamton about seven or eight years ago, and since that time, he has kept a house of bad character in the Fourth Ward, and has been much dreaded by his neighbors. About 2 o'clock Sunday morning a pistol shot was heard in or near his house, and a man was seen running from there toward Court street, and as no noise was heard about the house on Sunday or Monday mornign, the neighbors suspected that something must be wrong, and about noon on Monday notified Dr. Thayer, who had a claim on the house, of the circumstances The Doctor went immediately to the house and found all the windows and doors fastened. Upon entering the house he found the murdered man upon the floor. It is stated that the women who were in the house bolted the doors and fastened the windows, and then fled to another house of ill fame on Washington street and remained there until Monday morning, when they took the early train for parts unknown.
Buffalo Commercial Advertiser, Buffalo, NY, April 13, 1869
Yesterday morning Warren Blanchard was found dead in his house at Binghamton. The usual inmates, consisting of his wife and two girls, had fled, and the affair is involved in mystery. all the doors and windows of the house were fastened from the inside, except one from which the woman and girls escaped. Blanchard's head was found in a brass kettle, and bore a bullet wound. Nothing is known of the matter except that the neighbors heard a disturbance at three o'clock, and the report of a pistol, when a man ran out of the house, and the noise ceased. As the house was classed as disorderly, no attention was paid to the proceedings. The women, before leaving, cleared away all traces of blood.
Buffalo Express, Buffalo, NY, April 21, 1869
The Elmira Advertiser of Saturday contains the following: The inquest in the case of Warren Blanchard, who was murdered in his own house in Binghamton a few weeks ago, was brought to a close Friday afternoon. The jury found that Blanchard died from the effects of two pistol shots. James DeWitt and Mrs. Blanchard, the wife of the deceased, were held as principal and accessory. Mrs. Blanchard is not yet seventeen years old and was brought from Pennsylvania a few months ago by DeWitt, who pretended to marry her, but really had her married to Blanchard, who kept a brothel. Blanchard was nearly fifty years of age and was supposed to have had considerable money. The testimony indicates that this was a leading motive to the perpetration of the crime.
