In Brownville, Jefferson Co., N.Y., April 12d, Gen. T. Loomis, father of Mrs. Dr. Rogers, of this village [Chenango Co., NY], in the 81st year of his age. Gen. Loomis was for many years senior Warden of St. Paul's Church Brownville. He had been identified since its organization with the parish in the register of which his name as among the dead in Christ is now entered. He was ever earnest and self sacrificing in the days of his prosperity in promoting its interests and upholding the hands of its pastors. Bred in early life in a society outside the Church, as soon as her claims came under his notice, he embraced the Church with a clear, intelligent judgment, and loved with warm affection all her holy ways. It pleased an Inscrutable Providence to call him, through years of the latter portion of his life, to endure keen and protracted sufferings, borne with a depth of pious submission that made ministration at his bedside an edifying office to the pastor himself. As these lines are traced, memory runs back through long years elapsed to the time when, in the vigor of his days, his fine, manly form was bowed and his full-toned voice sounded in the sanctuary. God be thanked that the long-suffering and patient martyr of disease is at rest now, and that the body, racked and worn and exhausted, sleeps calmly in the village cemetery among a gathered host of precious Christian sleepers, the memory of whose hallowed virtues lingers fresh and green in a pastor's heart, sleepers who await the Divine master's call at the blessed hour of the resurrection and coronation of the just.
