Anna E. Nicholson
1860 - 1917

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Anna E. Nicholson passed away at her home on Court street recently.  She was the daughter of Amos and Amelia Fisher Nicholson and was born October 13, 1860, in the town of Preston [Chenango Co., NY].  Her mother died when she was 12 years of age and the daughter then went to DeRuyter, where she made her home and where she was educated in the public schools.  The deceased had resided in Norwich during the past 28 years and during that time was engaged in dressmaking.  She was secretary of the local N.P.L., No. 78, for 14 years and was known to a large circle of friends throughout this section.  She leaves one sister, Eunice A. Ingraham, and five brothers, Fred, of Preston; Wilson L. and Theron D., of Norwich; Frank and Charles, of Guilford.  The deceased was a member of the Episcopal Church of Guilford, where she resided before coming to Norwich. The funeral services were held from the home in this city Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. H.W. Foreman, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.  Interment was made in Mt. Hope Cemetery [Chenango Co., NY].

Captain Floyd Thompson
Chenango Union, July 13, 1864
We regret to learn that his friends have received dispatches announcing the death of Capt. Floyd Thompson of the 20th N.Y. Cavalry, at or near Norfolk.  At the latest accounts his remains were on the way home in charge of Lieut. Sage.  His father having been notified of his dangerous illness, had left to visit him before the announcement of his death was received.  Capt. Thompson's residence was in Otselic, this county [Chenango Co., NY].  In 1862 he raised a Company for the 114th and was appointed Quarter Master of the regiment.  The position he resigned after a few months, and not long afterwards raised a Company for the 20th (McClellan) Cavalry, of which he was appointed Captain, and held the commission to the end of his career.

Chenango Semi-Weekly Telegraph, July 13, 1864
Capt. J. Floyd Thompson, of Co. I, 20th N.Y Cavalry, died in the Hospital at Norfolk, Va., last week, of fever.  In 1862 Capt. T. raised a company for the 114th regiment, but at the organization of the regiment was appointed Quarter Master, and in that capacity went with it to Louisiana, and served with distinction and fidelity until discharged for ill health.  He came back, and after having recovered his health, when the enlisting fever broke out last fall, he raised a company for the 20th Cavalry and went again into the field to serve his country.  He has won new laurels in the service of the Army of the Potomac, and though called early by disease to his long home he has made his mark.  Everybody loved Floyd for his true heart and genial qualities.  Though his friends mourn for him, and they are many, they have the consolation that he died in the line of duty, and as he had often wished, in the service of his country.  His remains were brought home for interment.

Charles H. Briggs
ca 1843 - 1912
Mr. Chas. H. Briggs, one of the best known residents of Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY], who has been connected with the D. and H. office in that village since the advent of the railroad there, was found dead in bed Tuesday morning of last week.  Mr. Briggs had been failing of late, but was about the village the previous evening and seemed in better health. When he did not arise Tuesday morning at the usual hour, members of the household went to his room and found that he had expired during the night.  Dr. Danforth was called and pronounced death due to heart disease.  The funeral services were held the 1st inst. at 1:45 o'clock, from his late home, Rev. W.E. Tanner of New Berlin, formerly rector of St. Peter's church of that village, officiated at the funeral, assisted by Rev. Mr. Weller, the present rector.  Mr. Briggs was 69 years of age and has been connected in official capacity with the railroad office there for 48 years.  For many years he was telegraph operator and express agent and more recently had been the express agent only with office at the station.  He was a man of highest standing and respected by all, and all who knew him will learn with sincere regret of his demise.  He is survived by three children, Mrs. J. Earl Roberts, of Albany, whose husband is well known, having recently been made superintendent of the D. and H. Lines in Canada; Miss Olive, who is teaching in Madison, N.J., and Harry, residing at home.
