Obituaries (March 29)

Charlotte Monell
Chenango American, January 26, 1860
In this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 24th inst., Charlotte, wife of Hon Robert Monell, in the 69th year of her age.  The friend whose decease is above noticed has been long a resident in this place.  United in the marriage relation for a period of nearly fifty years, she leaves a lonely home to her surviving partner.  Her last sickness was long and painful.  She could truly say with one of old, "I am made to possess months of vanity and wearisome nights are appointed to me, yet as a Christian, she found God's grace sufficient for her and His strength made perfect in weakness."  Seldom is it that the shaft aimed so surely by death is thus delayed.  The dying pillow was soothed and softened by the administrations of loving hearts, and it is a comforting thought that so many of the passive virtues of the Christian character were illustrated in the chamber of sickness and on the couch of anguish at the closing moment, the spirit passed away like a candle blown out by the wind.
"Night dews fall not more gently to the ground;
Nor weary worn out winds expire so soft."
A large circle of friends will cherish the memory of her virtues, and realize that though her departure has left a sad void among them, yet she is now at rest in a land where pain and anguish can never wring the brow--in a land whose inhabitant can never say I am sick.

Otselic History continued

Otselic History
The Cox Reminiscences Continued
by Frank E. Cox
The DeRuyter Gleaner, March 1,1 1943

You will remember that I began my business career at the Burg in October, 1878, although quite intimately connected with it for five years, from October 1873.  In fact born and raised within sight of it, and in fact I have always lived within sight of good old Tallett Hill, where the two Tallett boys, Henry and Dudley settled on adjoining farms, after marrying the Church sisters, Glycera and Anna, in the 1830s.  A sister of the boys, Polly, married James Myers, and lived just over the hill a mile north with farms joining.

Henry, Dudley and Polly were children of John Tallett, the Hessian soldier, who was in Burgoyne's army.  Others of his children settled in our township or near.  But you ask, "who were the Hessians."  They were soldiers hired by King George III of England, from the Grand Duchy, ruler of the State of Hesse, Darmstadt, to fight with his English soldiers in subduing the American colonies, 1776 to 1783.  It was quite common in those days to hire soldiers. the price agreed upon with the English king for the 22,000 German soldiers was 3,000,000 pounds, nearly $15,000,000.  At the close of the Revolutionary war, 1783, many of the Hessian soldiers had to remain, settle in the colonies.  No provisions had been made for their return to their native Germany.

Many settled in Pennsylvania, some parts of which use the German tongue even now, 150 years afterward.  My Great-grandfather, John Tallett, with others of his army, settled in Madison county, Town of Brookfield, right close to the Columbus line.  I have been there and seen the location, though no buildings, just a clump of trees and bushes and the building near that was once the Tallett postoffice, and the Tallett brook is still there, of course, on which he had a dam for water power to operate his mills.

Well, soon after locating and opening my little store, Whit Ames began urging me to write items for  The Gleaner.  It was not entirely a new business to me, for while yet a boy at the farm home, I had sent items to the Chenango Telegraph, at Norwich.  A boyish fancy to see my writings in print I suppose.  I liked Whit, had an acquaintance with him at DeRuyter institute in 1870, and others of the seven or nine boys of the Ames family.  I knew Frank best for we were nearer of an age and he seemed to like to look after my welfare, I being a stranger in a new place to me.  Our rooms were near in the building.  By the way, Whit had the Otselic Center school, on the Turnpike, for the winter of 1870-71.

Well, again, here we are.  I began early in 1879, sending local happenings to Whit's Gleaner under the "Pseudonym" of T.R.U.E. or Fickle, and sometimes semi-occasionally.  So now I am recording for you oldsters and possibly some younger ones, selections from my old 1879 scrapbook.

March 22:  Milan D. Tallett, of Minneapolis, Kansas, visiting old home friends and relatives (he was my cousin and school chum).
Zachariah Taylor, the Sioux Indian, (he lived in Georgetown) gave a lecture in the M.E. church.  Attendance light--receipts light.
"Uncle Jimmy" Hicks, age 87, died from effects of stroke of apoplexy.
Vernes Miner, aged 21, a fine young man, in perfect health, died after a two weeks' battle with pleu-ro-pneumonia.
Johnny Lamb was badly injured by a fall from a load of hay.  A fork tine entered his body; also a severe injury to his back.
The Sunday morning audience met with quite a surprise, at the Baptist church when Mr. William Cook and Miss Mary Kenyon, walked up to the altar and were united in marriage.
The statistician, Mr. Woodal Eastman, informs us that over ten feet of snow has fallen during the winter, measuring each fall separately.  No wonder it still lingers upon the face of the earth.

April 7Johnny Lamb is improving.  So he can sit up a short time every day.  (Johnny followed in the footsteps of his father, George Lamb, and learned blacksmithing, and then migrated to a western state for his life's work).
Doctor James Stanbro of Upper Beaver Meadow, buried the 6th inst.
The hotel barns at North Otselic burned Friday night.

April 21:  Maple sugar making is still going fine.  Some farmers have already made 800 and 1,000 lbs.

April 20: Another foot of snow (now eleven feet) sleighing again.  Many sleighs in town Friday.
Prof. J.M. Seaman, the wonderful man-fly and gymnast, gave an exhibition of his wonderfulness on Saturday, performing on a rope stretched across the principal street, walking on the underside of the rope and then on top.

September 8:  Grasshoppers, dry weather and frosts.
Mr. Lester A. Warner returned to his studies at Brockport State normal School on Monday last.
Myron M. Perkins has rented half the storeroom now occupied by J.E. Parce in the new Parce Block, and will put in a stock of hardware, boots, shoes and notions.
Our fall school under the supervision of Miss Theresa Smith, opens today.
Many of our young people have disappeared to the hop yards to revel in the luxuries of dances, hop wishes, caterpillars, etc.  Perhaps more later.

Good-bye again.

George Stead, Holman H. Linn, Dorothea (Stone) Hansen
Died July 3, 1937 in Airplane Crash, Morris, NY
Belief that Captain George Stead of this city [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], his employer, H.H. Linn of Morris [Otsego Co., NY] and Mrs. Dorothea Hansen of Endicott [Broome Co., NY], who lost their lives in an airplane accident at Morris airport Saturday afternoon, met death before the four-cabin passenger plane burst into flames, was expressed Tuesday by those who visited the scene of the wreckage Monday.  Those who viewed the ruins of the fatality are of the opinion that the victims were killed when the ship crashed to the ground just a moment before it burst into flames.  Captain Stead, Mr. Linn and Mrs. Hansen died instantly, but the latter's husband, Arthur Hansen, 34, escaped death and was taken to the Bassett Hospital at Cooperstown, where his condition is reported serious.  Mr. Hansen was badly burned, but hopes are held out for his recovery.

Both Mrs. Linn and Mrs. Stead were eye witnesses to the accident that cost their husbands' lives.  Mrs. Stead, standing at the field to watch the take off, collapsed when the plane's wing tip hit a tree and the machine fell to earth and burst into flames.  She was treated for shock at the Oneonta Hospital, but later came to her home in Norwich.  Mrs. Linn was driving from Morris to her home when she saw the take off and the crash. She drove to the field, and then, because "there was nothing I could do," went on to her home.

Lee Brant, an Oneonta salesman, was an eye witness to the fatal crash, and he gave this version of the accident to state police.  He was driving past the private Linn landing field about 2 o'clock, saw the plane flying low and stopped to watch it, as he thought it might be stunting.  He saw the nose go up suddenly  and the ship drop off into a hollow at one side of the field, as through the pilot were trying to pick up speed.  Then a wing hit a small tree and the ship leaped crazily.  It crashed about 100 feet from where the wing struck.  At the take off the machine was flying just above the top of the brush growth, it was said.  When it hit it burst into flames and the Oneonta man saw Mr. Hansen thrown from the blazing wreck.  He ran to his side and found him staring dazedly at the wreckage.  By this time, others attracted by the crash ran to the scene.  Persons tried valiantly to rescue the three pinned in the heap, but were driven back by the fierce heat.  Firemen from Morris were unable to get their apparatus near the scene until a tractor was pressed into service to haul it through the brush.  After investigating with state police, Coroner Norman W. Getman of Oneonta declared the death of Mrs. Hanse, Captain Stead and Mr. Linn accidental.

Friends related Tuesday that Captain Stead had had two ships burn under him prior to the one of Saturday.  Ten or 12 years ago, just after he landed on his father's farm in Guilford, his ship burst into flames.  Neither he nor his brother Kenneth, who was with him at that time, suffered any injury.  In 1933 while flying over Mitchell field in an army plane, Captain Stead and another pilot had a thrilling experience when the machine burst into flames and they were forced to bail out over New Brunswick.  He was on active duty at Mitchell field at that time.  Captain Stead was a close friend of Jack Wright, Utica aviator, and had been closely identified with aviation at the Norwich airport with the late Warren E. Eaton, glider enthusiast.

Linn, a native of Washburn Me., went to Morris in 1917 and subsequently established his trailer manufacturing business.  Several years ago he constructed a hangar and field in "Patrick's Hill," near his home to facilitate his use of airplanes in business trips.  He was 60 years old and vice president of the America Tractor Company of Morris.  He owned four airplanes and made all his business trips in them.  His private field had one runway.  funeral services for the late Mr. Linn were held from his home Tuesday afternoon at Morris.

Services for Mrs. Hansen whose father, Charles Stone, was superintendent of the Linn Tractor plant at Morris, were held at Morris Tuesday morning and the body will be taken to Dexter, Me., for burial  With her husband she had gone to Morris to visit her parents, and with him and Captain Stead had started to fly to Syracuse with Mr. Linn, who was going on business.

The funeral of Captain Stead, private pilot for Mr. Linn since 1935, will he held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in Emmanuel Episcopal church.

Mr. Hansen, for whom hopes are held for recovery, is a foreman in the plant of the International Business Corporation at Endicott.

John Somers of Buffalo, department of commerce inspector, tested the Hillside airport at Morris Sunday in an effort to determine the cause of the crash.  He made several landings on the field, after making a long inspection of the terrain from the air, but released no statement of his opinion and will report his finding to government officials.
