A daughter of Judge C.E. Venderburg, formerly of Oxford [Chenango Co. NY], but now a resident of St. Pauls, Minn. was drowned in a cistern on the 12th of Sept.  The St. Paul Pioneer gives the following particulars:

"Yesterday at noon a very sad accident occurred in this city, which resulted in the death of Julia Venderburg, an interesting little girl of about ten years, and only daughter of judge C E. Venderburg, presiding judge of the Fourth Judicial District.  The accident as near as we can learn, was as follows:  The housekeeper, who was alone in the house, had occasion to do some washing during the morning, and in order to get water from the cistern owing to the pump being out of order, was compelled to open the trap door, which was located in the library, and draw it with a pail.  Thinking she would have to draw more she left the door open and went out to hang up the clothes.  While she was out Julia came from school at about ten minutes past twelve.  A few minutes later she went to a grocery near, and on returning, went into the house, and it is supposed in hurriedly passing into the library without noticing the open trap door, fell through and was drowned.  the housekeeper heard the splash and rushed in just in time to get a sight of her clothes floating on the water before she sunk the last time.  She attempted to rescue her and found she could not, and immediately gave the alarm on the street, and several neighbors came rushing in, and the body was raised as soon as possible.  Doctors and others were promptly summoned, and every effort was made to restore her to life, but it was found impossible as life had become extinct.  Judge Venderburg who had taken the train for Lichfield, to attend court there, was telegraphed to by Mr. R.J. Baldwin, and reached home the next morning.  This is a sad blow to the judge and will leave him and his little son in an almost heart-broken condition."

The subject of the above notice had a remarkably fine physical and mental development and gave promise of more than usual usefulness in Life's great work.  Quiet, unpretentious and diffident, yet vigorous and persevering, he was admired and loved by all who knew him.  Of excellent moral character he became deeply interested in all moral and religious improvements and very punctual in attendance at Sabbath School and church and gave conclusive evidence in his last sickness that the religious instruction to which he had been so attentive a listener had not been lost and his exclamations of love to Christ, of confidence in his mercy, of rejoicing in his salvation, and of hope of a glorious "home beyond the tide," gave satisfactory evidence of the gracious work wrought by the Divine Spirit in his believing heart, and the very large attendance at the funeral in the M.E. Church, the presence of the Trustees, Officers, Teachers and scholars of the Oxford Academy, the school being suspended to follow in sorrow a loved and honored student to his last resting place, attest the appreciation felt for one worthy of their high esteem.  He leaves his deeply afflicted parents and an only brother to mourn with other relatives and friends his premature departure.  May all be able to say "the Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord."  F.S.B.

We learn that Mr. Milo Sutliff, a native and for many years a resident of the town of Smyrna [Chenango Co. NY], died at Henry's Bend, Pa. on the 7th inst. of apoplexy, at the age of 62 years.  He was the eldest son of the late Nathan Sutliff, who, for many years resided three miles west of Smyrna village, and for some time was engaged in the mercantile business in Smyrna, with the late Dr. N.B. Mead. The deceased first married a daughter of Russell Case, and for a second wife a daughter of Joshua Pratt, Sen. of Sherburne.  The latter lost her life at Lyons, Iowa, by a lamp explosion.  For a number of years past, Mr. Sutliff has resided in Cleveland, Ohio, but we are not advised whether he was residing there or had removed to the place where he died. Thirty years ago, he was a well-known as any businessman in the northern part of the county, and many will remember him.  He leaves one or two sisters in Smyrna, one in Wheatland, Monroe County, and one or two children by his second wife in Sherburne.

I know thou art gone to the land of the blest, / Then why should my soul be so sad; / I know thou art gone where the weary do rest / And the mourner looks up and is glad. / I know that thy sufferings are o'er. / And from sorrow and sin thou art free. / But Alas! I shall see thee no more, / Thou dearest of dear ones to me.

OLIVER:  In Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY], on Thursday the 14th inst. after a severe illness, Charles Edwin [Oliver] only son of Edwin T. and Mary E. Oliver, aged 5 mos. and 23 days.

When we see a precious blossom / That we tended with such care, / Rudely taken from our bosom, / How our aching hearts despair.

Round its little grave we linger / Till the setting sun is low, / Telling all our hopes have perished / With the form we cherish so.

We shall sleep, but not forever, / There will be a glorious dawn; / We shall meet to part, no, never, / on the Resurrection morn.

MEDBURY:  In New Berlin [Chenango Co. NY], August 29th, Mr. Jeremiah Medbury, aged 87 years.

Another pioneer has gone to his rest.  The subject of this brief notice, Jeremiah Medbury, of New Berlin, was born in Rhode Island about the year 1784.  When a lad of eight years, seventy-nine years ago, he came with his father, Joseph Medbury to New Berlin township, then a dense forest in which roamed beasts of prey and containing scarcely half a dozen inhabitants.  for a quarter of a century, Jeremiah lived with his father upon lands near Great Brook, changing the face of nature, rugged and sterile, into fruitful fields, making the wilderness places to bloom as the rose.  The large portion of his days were spent upon a farm but a few rods distant from the homestead.

He lived an honest, industrious, useful life, rearing a family of six children, all of whom except one, are still living.  Jeremiah Medbury of this village is the eldest son and next to the oldest of the family.  Mr. Medbury retained his faculties and the vigor of manhood, in a remarkable degree, being seldom indisposed for a day, till his end drew nigh.  On Saturday, Aug. 26th, he was attacked with a stroke of paralysis, soon became unconscious, and died on the Tuesday following, at the advanced age of 87.  On Thursday last he was buried on the premises he had so long occupied.  We are reminded how little we of this age of Railroads, Telegraphs, splendid equipages, and manifold comforts and luxuries, realize of the trials, hardships and deprivations of our fathers of three score and ten years ago.

It is sad to think the Pioneers of our own county are nearly all gone, and that we have no more reliable record of their services and lives.  Tradition, always vague and uncertain, in a little while will constitute the only link upon which to depend, to connect the remote past with the present and future.
