In New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], on Sunday morning, the 22d ultimo, of consumption, Miss Amanda L. [Ely], daughter of Noah Ely, esq., aged 21 years.  Cut off in the flower of her years, and in the midst of high hopes and promise, this afflicting dispensation of Providence will prove to her relatives and friends a most distressing stroke.  Few were so well qualified to confer happiness upon the domestic circle.  With an accomplished and brilliant education she united the most sweet and gentle manners.  Her temper was cheerful and amiable, and her whole deportment marked by every grace and virtue which can adorn and dignify the female character.  Her sufferings during a protracted illness were borne with resignation, and she died in the full hope of a glorious resurrection through the merits of her Redeemer.  [July 2, 1834]

In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on the 20th inst. of consumption, Miss Sarah [Buttolph], daughter of David Buttolph, esq., aged 15 years.  The removal from earth of this young lady exemplifies the uncertain tenor of human life, and the transitory nature of earthly enjoyments.  But a few weeks since she was in the bloom of life, prosecuting with a success that gladdened the hearts of her parents and teachers, her literary pursuits, and now is the sole tenant of the lonely tomb.  Her sweetness of temper, her meekness and truly Christian goodness of heart, endeared her to numerous friends, and rendered her the delight of the family circle. she is the third child of which Mr. B. has been deprived in a very short time. Truly has this event filled his cup of bitterness to the brim, and the Fountain of mercies alone can sweeten it.  But the stay and consolation of her bereaved parents are, that she cherished and enjoyed a faith and hope which sustained her in her final sufferings, and ensure a glorious resurrection to eternal life. Washington in the battles of Long Island and also at White Plains, and at that disastrous period of our Revolutionary fortunes, his patriotism and courage remained unshaken, and his services were, though late, rewarded by a pension from his country.  For many years past he has been a resident of this village, beloved by his family and respected by his friends. [Sept. 10, 1834]

Towards the close of Tuesday afternoon of last week, a man by the name of Carpenter, who resided in New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], was thrown from his gig while riding in the east part of this town, and so badly hurt that he died at about two o'clock on Wednesday morning.  No human eye, except his own, witnessed the accident; but from the traces afterwards discovered, it was ascertained that while descending a hill he was thrown from his seat in such a manner that  one or both of his legs became entangled in the reins or fastened to some part of the Sulkey underneath (probably the latter) and in this situation he was dragged some thirty or forty rods over a rough and stony road, and bruised most shockingly.  He was soon discovered, wholly insensible, and taken to the house of Mr. George Cook, from whose family and from the neighboring ones he received all the attention which kindness and benevolence could administer.  Physicians were immediately sent for, as well as some of his connexions.  His wife and an only child arrived before he died, tho of their presence he was entirely unconscious.  We learn that he had not his reason at any time after the occurrence of the accident.  [Oct. 2, 1833]

In Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], on the 13th inst. Dr. Israel Farrell, an old and highly respectable citizen of that town. [Oct. 23, 1833]

In Greene [Chenango Co., NY], on Thursday the 4th instant, Mr. Daniel Vine, aged about 18 years. [Apr. 10, 1833]

In this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on the 10th inst. after an illness of three weeks, Mrs. Ruamy Wells, consort of Mathew O. Wells, and daughter of James Packer, aged 19 years.  The friends and relatives of the deceased will long lament their inestimable loss.  She possessed an amiable disposition, always manifesting evidence of sincere thanks to God in health, a perfect example of Christian fortitude in sickness, and an entire resignation to her Maker's will in her last illness.  At thirteen years of age, having been bereft of an affectionate mother, she took upon herself the maternal care of her Father's family, consisting of three brothers elder and one brother and four sisters younger than herself.  At the age of seventeen, she became a member of the Baptist church, and has ever adorned her profession by an exemplary life fit for any or for all to follow. At nineteen she was untied to Mr. Wells by the marriage tie which happy union was permitted by Providence to last but five weeks, when she was called from this world, leaving a disconsolate husband, affectionate parents and eight brothers and sisters to lament their loss.  [Apr. 17, 1833]

In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on the 10th inst., John Riddle, esq. aged 49 years.  Mr. R. was supervisor of Preston at the time of his death. A correspondent says "He has been a resident of this town for more than twenty years, was an amiable and peaceable man, has filled various offices in town with honor.  His acquaintance was extensive, and he had as few enemies perhaps as any other man.  He was a warm friend, a kind and affectionate husband and father, and his family have met with an irreparable loss.  His death came upon us so suddenly, that it made every countenance look sad.  He was sick only about two days, and the immediate cause of his death was in consequence of taking too large a dose of Bloodroot and Colchicum.  But he is gone, therefore the word speaks still louder.  "Be ye also ready." [May 22, 1833]

In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on the 17th inst., very suddenly, Mr. Stephen Ballou, a respectable citizen, aged 64 years. We understand Mr. B. died in a fit of apoplexy. [May 22, 1833]

In Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], on the 19th ult., Mrs. Phebe Guthrie, wife of Joseph Guthrie, aged 68 years. [June 5, 1833]

At Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], on monday morning last, Elias Babcock, Esq., aged about 55 years.  Mr. B. was one of the early settlers of the town of Sherburne, and for the last thirty years of his life an active and enterprising merchant.  By close attention to business and a rigid economy, he had amassed a large fortune and at his death was one of the most wealthy capitalists of our county.  He was in some respects peculiar and eccentric in his habits.  He was true in his friendships, and charitable to the poor, an indulgent landlord and a lenient creditor, and in the recollection of these virtues, his frailties (all mankind have their frailties) will be forgotten.
