Murder in Oneonta

We learn from the Oneonta (Otsego County) [NY] Herald that on Tuesday last, Victor Beach, son of the late Samuel B. Beach, Esq., killed his mother, who resided in that village, by two revolved shots, one taking effect in the head and the other in the pelvis.  After shooting his mother, he aimed a shot at his own brain. The bullet entered his right eye and passed out in the hollow of the ear. when the neighbors reached the house, Mrs. Beach lay upon the floor just breathing her last, and the son near her, the blood oozing from his skull.  He soon roused up and began to talk, saying that he was drunk and mad; that he meant to kill his mother and then destroy his own life; that on returning home he went upstairs and got a revolver belonging to his brother, Oscar Beach, and came downstairs, and found his mother engaged in making a fire in the stove, and that as soon as he got a good opportunity he fired the shot at her head, and the other after she fell upon  the floor, and then made the attempt upon his own life, and was sorry he did not succeed.

Dr. Meigs Case, examined the wound of the murderer and does not regard it as dangerous. Beach was taken in charge by constable E.W. Bennet, and Coroner Hendrix of Otego held the proper inquest.  The prisoner was fully committed for murder to await the action of the Grand jury which convenes in August.  Officer Bennet was directed to remove him to the jail of the County as soon as the state of his wound and his health would permit.

It is proper to state that Victor Beach is a cripple, having been accidentally shot many years ago, the ball reaching the region of the spine and there remaining.  He has no use of his right hand, his right arm and leg are withered, and his whole physical nad mental organization fearfully injured.

Mrs. Beach was a most estimable woman and did all that a mother could for the poor wretch that has taken her life. She was about fifty-three years of age.

The Ministerial Wife Poisoner, William H. Green

The character of Rev. W.H. Green, recently arrested in Utica [Oneida Co., NY], charged with poisoning his wife in Connecticut, does not prove to be of the best.  Here is what the Litchfield, Ct. Sentinel says of him.  Litchfield is his former place of residence, and Green is now there lodged in jail.

He (Green) went to Cornwall sometime last winter, called himself a Methodist minister, and a Union refugee from Texas, and made himself remarkable for his loud-mouthed patriotism.  During the last spring's campaign, he took the political stump for the Radicals, denounced copperheads in the most ultra-style, and exalted P.T. Barnum to the "seventh heaven."  In short, he put himself up as a sort of chaplain to the "late" political showman.  After election, his fond hopes blasted, he set up a small store in West Cornwall.  His wife, who was feeble in health, died May 7th.  His conduct of late having excited suspicion, the body was disinterred by the authorities and the stomach sent to New Haven for analysis. Green in the meantime had disappeared, and the examination of the stomach having strengthened the suspisions against him, Deputy Sheriff Chancy Baldwin was sent after him into New York State with a requisition form Gov. English.  We understand that Green had on his person, when arrested, a letter of recommendation from P.T. Barnum. He says he is now married to a woman living in Utica.

Last winter, we learn, Green held a series of revival meetings at Guilford Centre, this county [Chenango Co., NY].  He was regarded as an eloquent and effective preacher and produced a great deal of excitement in the vicinity of his meetings.  He is now a candidate for the gallows, being charged with the murder of his wife.

Complier Note:  An article that tells the full story of the "Rev." William H. Green and his connection to Chenango County was published in the 2013 issue of the Journal of the Chenango County Historical Society, ("The Ministerial Wife Poisoner") which is available for sale from the Chenango County Historical Society Museum in Norwich, NY.  The article's introductory paragraph is as follows:

"In the mid-1860s there appeared in Chenango County a man named William H. Green who exuded charisma and the virtuous qualities associated with a minister of the gospel, which he purported himself to be.  His refined manners and excessive charm plus his considerable oratorical skills gained him quick acceptance by local residents, with the result that they welcomed him into their lives.  Subsequent events would show that his true character was quite the opposite of what he portrayed himself to be, and the deception would prove deadly for a young Civil war widow named Mary Helen Searles of Guilford in Chenango County. Within two months of her acquaintance with William H. Green, she had married him, only to die by his hand four months following her wedding."

Mary Helen Searles, the unfortunate wife of William H. Green, is buried in West Bainbridge Cemetery, Chenango County, New York.  William H. Green did not die on the gallows, but rather, died in prison at Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT in 1880.

McCULLOR:  In Greene [Chenango Co., NY], on the 18th inst., Mrs. S.A. McCullor, aged 42 years.

Death of Rev. Edward Andrews, D.D.

Oxford Times, March 20, 1867

The Rev. Dr. Edward Andrews, died at Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], on the 5th inst., aged 75 years.  Dr. Andrews will be remembered by many here. About the year 1825 he was the Principal of the Oxford Academy, and there are those now living here and elsewhere, who were his pupils, and who bear witness to his remarkable acquirements and gifts, both as an instructor, and a man.  His last visit here was at the time of the consecration fo the present St. Pauls' Chruch, and his eloquent commemorative Discourse, in the old church, upon occasion at that time of the last services held by the congregation therein, is fresh in the memory of many who listened to him.

The following brief sketch of one who was one of the pioneers of religion and learning in our midst, and whose impress upon every community in which he lived and moved was of a character so exalted and excellent, cannot fail to interest many who knew him personally or have heard of him from those who did.

Dr. Andrews was born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, in the year 1792.  His father was a leading lawyer at the Massachusetts bar, a graduate of Harvard College in 1783, and the deceased, at the age of fourteen, entered the same institution, from which he graduated with high honor in a class of seventy.  He studied law in his father's office, in which the late Rufus Choate was also a student, and was admitted to practice at the age of twenty-four.  He entered at once upon an extensive and lucrative practice, but two years had scarcely elapsed, when the sudden death in the same week of a much-loved brother and sister changed the current of his ambition and his thoughts, and he abandoned the law, pursued a course of theological study, was licensed and appointed by the Presbyterian board of Missions, a traveling missionary for Western New York.  In the then unsettled state of the country, in the main a wilderness, he pursued his mission on horseback, traveling from schoolhouse to schoolhouse, preaching the way of salvation. After continuing his missionary labors for some time, he finally took charge of a congregation at Norwich, in this county [Chenango Co., NY].  He was subsequently Principal of the Oxford Academy, and after the completion of the new Academy on Fort Hill about 1830, delivered the dedicatory address at the opening. About this time, he made the acquaintance of the celebrated Bishop Hobart, and as a result of conversations and discussion with him, he in 1827 took orders in the Episcopal Church. After officiating as an Episcopal clergyman at different points, he was called in 1836 to the charge of Christ's Church, Binghamton, and where he continued his public ministrations untill a few years since, when failing health compelled him to relinquish his sacred duties, except at intervals or upon special occasions.  Dr. Andrews was a ripe scholar, and in learning, and the scholarly finish of his discourses, as well as in the graces of oratory he had few equals in this day. The Binghamton Republican form which we take the above facts, closes an admirable sketch of the lamented dead as follows:

Dr. Andrews was of a delicate physical organizations, and of a highly nervous temperament.  He was of a social disposition warm and sympathetic in his feelings, frank, outspoken and friendly.  In conversation he was peculiarly brilliant.  There was an animation, terseness and vigor of expression, and a wealth of thought and illustration in his private discourse, which gave to even ordinary topics an unwonted interest.  Although his mind retained its strength to the last, yet for several years his physical powers had been declining. The somewhat sudden death of his beloved wife, which occurred a short time since, was a terrible shock to his already weakened system, and the prostrating effects of that bereavement, were doubtless the immediate cause of his own fatal illness.

It is a saddened home, / For one by one its treasures have departed, / And in its silence, worn and broken hearted, / The father weeps alone. / Be still, so still.

The soft fair arms that round his neck were twining, / The little feet that were so fond of climbing / Upon his chair. / Forever gone

The rosy faces watching for his coming, / And eager pattering footsteps swiftly running, / When he came home, / "My God and can it be

That in the long and dreary years to come / I nevermore shall in my lonely home / Their faces see? / "There's rest in Heaven" /The mother said, as by the river side / She fearless stood, "sweet rest for me," she cried. / "By Jesus given."

And waiting there. / The mother and the children joyful stand, / Beckoning the father to a better land, / Where angels are.

Fatal Accident:  On Friday last, Jan. 25th, Mr. Norman Felt, residing near Earlville [Madison Co., NY], was drawing a load of straw, and running into a pitch hole in the road was thrown by the sudden jar from the load upon his horses, rolling down upon the whiffletrees.  The horses evidently soon kicked him off, under the sleigh, drawing the whole load over him.  He was so badly injured that he died the next morning about eight o'clock.  the accident happened about noon.  His injuries seemed to be in his neck and spine, his limbs being entirely paralyzed, and he was in the greatest pain the most of the time.  Probably the spinal cord was either severed, or so powerfully compressed as to cause the paralysis.  Hamilton Rep.

In North Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], suddenly, May 19th, Samuel Lyon, Esq., aged 78 years.

Another aged and respected citizen of our county died on Sunday morning last, Samuel Lyon, Esq., of North Norwich.  Mr. Lyon was an old resident of this town and North Norwich, and held various positions of trust, among them, for several terms, the office of Justice of the Peace.  Losing his wife some years since, the latter part of his life has been passed among his children.  His death was sudden.  One day last week he walked from his daughter's in Sherburne (Mrs. Waters) to the residence of his son-in-law, Cuyler Per Lee, Esq., of North Norwich.  On Saturday evening he retired in his ordinary  health and spirts, and came down stairs Sabbath morning apparently as well as usual.  On entering the sitting room with his accustomed cheer, and while making some remarks upon the beauties of the morning, by a stroke of apoplexy, this being the third attack, he fell to the floor, and in a moment was dead.  Thus, another of the feeble few who lived in generations gone by, and who connect the present with the distant past, has gone to his reward.  Within the short space of about two weeks, in North Norwich alone we have chronicled the death of no less than four of our oldest citizens:  John Gile, aged 75; Richard Gorton, aged 88; Elijah Buell, aged 79; Samuel Lyon, aged 77.  Within that time Phineas Newton, of Plymouth, aged 81, and Caleb Cooper, of Guilford, aged 85, have also died, making six pioneers of our county that have recently passed away, within a circumference of six or eight miles of the county seat, representing, in years, an aggregate of nearly five centuries.  Well may we exclaim "Our fathers, where are they, and the Prophets, do they live forever?"  The few remaining links in the chain which holds us to the unwritten records of the past and to events so remote as to be forgotten, are being severed.  Who will gather from the broken and scattered remnant the traditions of Chenango and give us its well digested annals in a manner that will do honor to the memory of our Pioneer Fathers?

A Child Drowned:  A most shocking and fatal accident occurred on Sunday morning last, near the stone quarry about 4 miles below this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], resulting in the drowning of a little daughter of William Haight.  The mother, with this child, her brother, about twelve years of age, and another quite young, had just started for the West bank of the river in a boat, when it struck a log which had lodged upon the upper point of an island about four rods below the river bridge.  The party were all precipitated into the water, the boy succeeded in reaching land, and the mother, although in water above her waist held fast to the youngest child, and saved herself by wading to the shore.  She grasped for the last one in hopes of securing her by the clothing, and caught her shawl, but the little one was soon carried by the current beyond all hope of rescue. A little dog that was with them in the boat is also missing, probably held fast by the child when she was thrown into the water. The deceased was a bright child of eight summers, a great pet of her parents, who were almost paralyzed with grief at her loss. The current was quite rapid where the accident occurred, and a short distance below falls over a dam, below which there is deep water. Although all possible efforts have been made for the recovery of the body, they have as yet proved unavailing.  Oxford Times

Drowned in Preston [Chenango Co., NY], May 20th, Mr. Wm. R. Sayles, aged 23 years.

On Tuesday morning of ast week, the 21st inst., Roger W. Sayles, of Preston, was found dead in the pond or creek a little below Child's sawmill, near Preston Corners. Coroner T.J. Bailey, being notified of the fact, visited the locality and held an inquest, on Wednesday morning.  It appears that near noon of Monday, the deceased went out fishing.  Not returning at a late hour in the evening, connected with the fact that he was subject to epileptic fits, his friends became concerned about him, and search was immediately made.  His body was found, as before stated Tuesday morning.  The jury came to the conclusion that the said R.W. Sayles came to his death by accidental drowning, caused by fits and falling from the dam into the water.  Mr. Sayles was respectably connected, a young man temperate in his habits, and of good character.  He had two brothers who served faithfully in the 114th Regiment, Corporal M. Sayles of this village and J.C. Sayles, now of Susquehanna Co., Pa., who came near losing his life by a severe wound at the battle of Opequan. The deceased leaves a young wife, yet scarcely sixteen years of age, to mourn his loss.  His age was 23 years.

In Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], May 5th, 1867, after an illness of ten weeks, Mr. Caleb Cooper, aged 85 years and 7 months.  He came among the early settlers in the year 1807, and located in the south part of Guilford, where he since resided, and for more than half a century lived happily with his surviving widow, rearing a very respectable family, and accumulating a comfortable property.  He bore an irreproachable and estimable character, ever truthful and reliable; in his dealings upright and honest; always peaceable and obliging; politically a Democrat, ever loving the flag of the Union, as his service in the war of 1812 evidenced.  Last autumn he felt that human goodness or excellence alone could not prepare him for Heaven.  He sought and obtained a firm and precious hope of a glorious immortality through the atoning blood and righteousness of Christ, cheerfully saying the sting of death was taken away. During his illness, everything which his able physician, loving children and kind neighbors could do for him, was done.  He was buried on the 7th, with solemn and appropriate services.  His aged widow, brothers, sisters and children have the consoling sympathy of their many friends in their deep affliction.

In Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], May 1st, 1867, Mrs. Adalaide A. Johnston, wife of John Johnston, Esq., recently of Paterson, N.J., and youngest daughter of Horace and Betsey Jones, of Coventry.  This sad bereavement has sent a pang of grief and sorrow to the hearts of a large circle of relatives and friends.  The deceased was a young woman possessed of more than ordinary charms and attractions.  Her evident intelligence and cultivation of mind, and her pleasing manners, made a favorable impression at once upon all who met her; while her bright cheerfulness, gentleness and amiability of character, drew to her the warmest affections of all who knew her intimately.  But thus taken from us by a mysterious visitation of providence, we bow our sorrowful hearts in humble submission to the will of the Great Dispenser of all events, and find our consolation in the fact that she died in the communion of God's holy church; in the comfort of a reasonable, religious and holy hope; and while looking forward in hope "to the general resurrection and the life of the world to come," we invoke God's mercies and blessings upon her bereaved husband and tender infant whom she leaves behind.
