Marriages (April 20)

Burr - Slater
Married October 5, 1940, Norwich, NY
Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  The marriage of Miss Gertrude M. Slater, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Linn W. Slater, to Donald H. Burr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon G. Burr of this city, was solemnized this morning at 10 o'clock in the First Congregational Church.  The pastor, the Rev. Dr. G. Edgar Wolfe, officiated, using the double ring service.  An organ recital by Mrs. Floyd Miner preceded the ceremony. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a princess style gown of white satin with a finger tip veil.  She carried a shower bouquet of white roses, bavardia and maiden-hair fern.  Her maid of honor, Miss Eleanor Gates, wore a short sleeved dress of dusty pink taffeta with a sweetheart bonnet of wine velvet. She carried an arm bouquet of wine scabisosia.  Charles Munday served as best man.  Ushers were Henry Burr, a brother  of the bridegroom, and Paul Enggard.  A wedding breakfast was served the bridal party and immediate families at the Oxford inn following the ceremony.  Pre-nuptial events honoring the bride were given by Miss Eleanor Gates, Mrs. Vernon G. Burr, Mrs. Leon M. Walworth, Mrs. G. Ray Wells, Mrs. Arthur Davis, Miss Evelyn Christie and Miss Gertrude Reynolds.

Mr. & Mrs. Orrin Anderson
55th Wedding Anniversary - Married December 25, 1879
A few relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Orrin L. Anderson surprised them at their son's home Tuesday on the occasion of their 55th wedding anniversary.  December 25, 1879, Alice Skinner and Orrin Anderson were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Skinner, on the Norwich-South New Berlin road.  Mr. and Mrs. Anderson lived for many years on the farm where their son, Daniel Anderson, now resides.  To them were born two children, a son, Daniel E. Anderson, who married Lena Pudney and a daughter, Eunice, who married Charles Pudney.  Eunice Anderson Pudney died in April, 1926.  There are four grandchildren, Laverne D. Anderson, who married Anita Belle Christman of South New Berlin; Olive Anderson, who is her father's housekeeper since her mother died, and Richard and Donald.  Mr. and Mrs. Anderson have always lived within three miles of their present home. They are both well known in Norwich and South New Berlin and have many friends here.  At 2 o'clock a bountiful turkey dinner was served, to which the company did ample justice.  Later Mr. Aldrich, in behalf of the company, presented the couple with a radio, which he said would speak for them in the days to come.  Mr. and Mrs. Anderson are in usual good health, and hope to enjoy many more years together.  A poem, "Fifty-five Years Married" written by Miss Maude Mathewson and dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Anderson appears below:

Fifty-Five Years Married
by Maude Mathewson

This Christmas Day of 1934
Brings memories by the score.
Long ago, before my time,
Occurred a wedding in Dec. 1879.

Alice Skinner was the fair-haired bride,
Orrin Anderson was the man by her side.
A farmer's daughter she,
And a farmer he was bound to be.

The Wedding ceremony done,
A new home was soon begun.
Not far from her father's house, less than a mile,
They began their home on the farm of Smith Guile

For full many a year
They lived on this farm here;
But when their son married and brought his bride home,
The old folks left them and started to roam.

In all they have lived in places three,
But now live near the old place, just as should be.
The years have brought joys and pleasures by the score,
But sorrow has knocked at their door.

Eunice, their joy and pride, has crossed the tide,
And Lena has joined her on the other side.
They two are waiting in heaven fair
For the grand reunion when we shall meet them there.

The hopes of this couple today
Are centered in their grandchildren four;
One girl and three boys,
Bring them plenty of joys.

Our love and best wishes we bring today,
As we help them celebrate this mark along life's way.
They who have lived through peace and strife
Fifty-five years as man and wife,
Fifty-five years of married life.

Leslie Elbert Hooker
Died December 2, 1935
Leslie E. Hooker, father of Mrs. Chester A. Miller, of 62 Ford avenue and a member of the New York State Bar association, passed away yesterday morning at his winter home in San Mateo, Fla.  Mr. Hooker, who was 78 years old, was a native of Otsego county.  After practicing law in this county and in Binghamton, Mr. Hooker moved to the New England states, where he became prominent as the inventor of a process which revolutionized the tubing industry as far as the manufacture of radiators and cartridges was concerned.  He developed a process whereby soft metal could be pressed through an annular opening to form a tube instead of being drawn by means of a punch.  This method of extrusion was revolutionary in that it divided the number of operations necessary to produce a tube of soft metal such as brass, copper, lead or other alloys.  It greatly deduced the cost of producing tubes as compression was used instead of driving. The molecules were pressed together instead of drawn apart as they were in the drawing process, which had been used up to the time of the invention  During the World war, the United States Cartdidge company at Lowell, Mass. took over the method of manufacturing shells by extrusion and it was in this branch of work that Mr. Hooker's invention became widely known. The company found it had only a fractional number of defective cartridges as the sidewalls did not split when fired. The government became interested in the process and, following tests, specified Hooker's cartridges for use in machine guns on all combat airplanes. These shells were used extensively during the latter part of the war, and it is estimated that the Lowell firm manufactured over 2,000,000 cartridges up to three inches in diameter.  Licenses to manufacture cartridges by his extrusion methods were secured by the governments of France, Italy and England.  Mr. Hooker experimented in the development of seamless tubes for the Liberty airplane motor, then in the process of construction by the government.  His process resulted in the making of metal torpedo caps for railroads and it is now used in the manufacture of all sorts of collapsible tubes.  The radiator of the car used by Barney Oldfield to make his famous speed record in 1914 was supervised by Mr. Hooker when he was general manager of the Metallic Shell & Tube company at Pawtucket, R.I.  During this period, Mr. Hooker experimented successfully with the method of extrusion rather than drawing and the result proved a stronger tube at less expense.  The deceased was born in South Edmeston, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Hooker.  He was educated in the district schools and studied law in New Berlin under H.H. Harrington.  Admitted to the State Bar association in 1880, Mr. Hooker practiced in New Berlin for several years before moving to Binghamton, where he lived for about 20 years.  In 1882, he married Miss Cora E. Lamb of South Edmeston.  Mr. Hooker retired about 15 years ago and since then had resided at his summer home in New Berlin and at his winter home in San Mateo.  He was in ill health when he left for Florida in September and late last month his condition took a turn for the worse.  Mrs. Miller has been at his home for several weeks.  Surviving are his wife and daughter; one son, Ross B. Hooker, East Providence, R.I.; and several grandchildren.  Oneonta Star.

Tragedy, unpredictable as always, struck into the heart of this vicinity early Thursday morning when James H. Otselic History by Frank E. Cox

Otselic History
by Frank E. Cox
DeRuyter Gleaner, June 16, 1938

From my earliest recollections, the "gala day" was when I could go to the "Burg" with the folks, weekly, or whenever in need of supplies--a three mile trip from the farm on the hill.  I knew the village by no other name until I was well along in my teens.

South Otselic [Chenango Co., NY] was named when the Township of Otselic was formed in 1817.  However, in early times it had been known as "Sugar Hollow," "Plum Creek" (the Indian name), "Bowen Settlement" and "The Burg."

Just why it was called "Bowen Settlement" aroused my curiosity to the extent of looking over the transactions in real-estate of one Luther Bowen, as recorded in the county clerk's records.  His first deed was of April, 1822, as a resident of Smyrna, but on April 1st, 1824, he began in Otselic by deeding to Jethro Hatch 300 acres for $600.  The last recorded deed was a sale to Simeon Miner of Lincklaen, January 26, 1846, making a total of 155 deeds recorded.  Mr. Bowen died in 1850, aged 68 years.

I find many familiar names as I go thru the long list, Here are a few:  Norman Ford, William Thompson, Lyman Beach, William Tyler, Reuben Parker, Elihu Thompson, Myrtule N. Waldron, Ezra T. Webb, Simeon Miner, Levi Allen, Jethro Hatch, South Otselic Baptist church, and others too many to mention.

In 1839, Luther Bowen entered the mercantile business with his son, Wells, but in 1947 sold his interest to Myrtulo N. Waldron, who soon sold out to Wells, and he took in his brother, Dr. James K. Bowen. They built the old Parce store in 1851.  This store burned October 4, 1877.  Was rebuilt in 1878. The Bowen Brothers sold out to Wells B. Ufford in 1856.  Wells went to Kansas and the Doctor to Missouri.

Along in the 1870s, LeRoy Bowen was operating a farm of 366 acres near town and the place is still [in 1938] known as the Bowen farm.  So far as I know there is none of the descendants in this locality.

David B. Parce built the 1878 store recently [in 1938] demolished to make way for a Texaco gas station.  I have been told that a log blacksmith shop occupied this site in the early history of the village.

The first physician in South Otselic was Dr. Norman Ford, who came from Delhi in 1824, and married a daughter of Jonathan Beach of Lincklaen in 1826.  He kept the first tavern in the house he built, adding to it as business increased for fifteen years.  He was also the first postmaster, and kept it in his house.  It was established in 1830.  He held it a long time.

Others to hold the office were James Clark, Doctor Wyckoff, and David B. Parce, who was appointed in 1861, holding it until 1879, when Judson E. Parce was appointed and held the same until his death, December 26, 1884.

The Gothic House was built in 1850 by John P. Taylor.

Thomas G. Healey had the first blacksmith shop.

The South Otselic Baptist church was organized in 1844, and bought their lot of Luther Bowen for $75.00

I think this will do for this time, but may trouble you again some time if I feel so inclined.
