Oxford Gazette, Oxford, NY, September 14, 1825

Death

Of the consumption at Walton [Delaware Co. N] on the 23d inst. Mr. Cyrus North in the 32d year of his age.  Mr. North was well known to a very extensive circle of acquaintance, as a young man of talents, of literary attainment, and of amiable and interesting deportment.  In his infancy he became blind and he continued so ever since that period.  Notwithstanding this disability, through the aid of his friends and more especially of his sisters who served him in the capacity of reader and amanuensis, he made himself liberally acquainted with the English literature, principally in the departments of belles' letters, history and political science. Endowed with the faculty of a most ready perception, he acquired knowledge with surprising facility, the absolute possession of which was at all times secured to him by an exceedingly retentive memory.  The interest which his mental accomplishments and the loss of his sight created in his behalf, aided by his ambition and capabilities, introduced him into an enlarged and elevated sphere of social intercourse that embraced a great number of persons of worth and distinction in the state.  He possessed a commanding influence of character.  In all matters that elicited opinion, he formed and advanced his conclusions with readiness and force and under the control of pure motives and a sound judgment, which he retained to the last moment of his life.  During the last three years of his life, he engaged in the mercantile business.  The want of sight was almost remedied by the enlarged capacity of his other senses, and he transacted with surprising dispatch and accuracy most of the details of business. During his last illness he was visited by the consolations of the gospels.  He died a Christian.  It is needless to add that the death of such a man is an afflicting bereavement.  But the grief of relatives and friends however poignant is assuaged by the reflection that his life was spent in usefulness and honor, and its last moments crowned with the faith and blissful hopes of the Christian salvation.  Del. Death

In this village [Delhi, Delaware Co. News Item

Under our Hymenial head last week, we noticed the marriage of Doct. Gaius Halsey of Kortright [Delaware Co. NY] to a Miss Liscomb of Burlington, Otsego County [NY].  In a communication we have received from the Doctor, he assures us he is not married and that we have been duped.  We therefore take the earliest opportunity of publicly contradicting the statement.

With what motive the communication was made is best known to the individual himself.  The notice came to us in as unexceptionable a shape as we could have reason to expect.  We have uniformly been cautious in inserting such notices without knowing something of the source from whence they came and in this instance, we supposed we acted with all due care. The signature of the letter was one of common occurrence and if the person intended it as a hoax, he felt disposed to pay at rather a dear rate we should think - for the letter, besides being postage paid, enclosed a fee. Taking all things into consideration we did not hesitate to insert the notice, not supposing anyone foolish enough to play off a hoax at his own expense.

We sincerely hope we shall not again be under the necessity of contradicting the like notices.

MAYNARD - BUELL:  At the residence of the bride's mother in this town [Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY], on the 3d inst. by Rev. James Chambers, Mr. Robert P. Maynard of San Francisco and Miss Harriet L. Buell of this village.

Notwithstanding the storm, Mrs. Buell received a large number of her friends Tuesday evening, June 3d at the marriage of her daughter, Harriet L. to Mr. Robert P. Maynard, of San Francisco, Cal.  The bride, of course, was the center of attraction and never did she appear so charming as when taking upon her the marriage vow. she was attired in a pea green silk which with the orange flowers that adorned her hair and a long bridal veil set off her graceful figure to magnificent advantage. The groom is a gentleman of commanding appearance and won the admiration of all by his becoming and refined bearing.  The residence was beautifully decorated with evergreens and suspended above the portrait of the grandmother of the bride in the center of the parlor was the monogram "M.B."  The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. James Chambers. After receiving the congratulations which were numerous and hearty, the happy pair were conducted to the dining room, where, with their friends, they partook of a very sumptuous collation.  Among the guests were Rev. T.L. Randolph and daughter, Warren and Isaac S. Newton, Esq. of Norwich, Albro Newton, Esq., of Brooklyn and Dr. Newton, uncles of the bride; Mrs. Gridley of Clinton, N.Y., Miss Emily Mansfield, Miss Hattie Oaks and Mrs. Mary Gray of New Haven, Ct. and Rev. William N. Chambers, brother of the officiating clergyman.  Specially noticeable was the presence of Capt. and Mrs. Newton, grandfather and grandmother of the bride.  Having enjoyed sixty-nine years of wedded life, their presence added much to the pleasure of the company.  The bride received a large number of presents some of which were very delicate specimens of the artistic skill of her numerous friends.  Mr. and Mrs. Maynard took the 8:40 train Wednesday morning for a few days visit in New York and New Haven.  After a short sojourn in Sherburne upon their return, they will proceed to San Francisco where they will reside.

There is not half a score of families in the county but can trace some marriage relationship to her.  She was a good woman and consistent member of one of the orthodox churches. Ezra Cartwright, lately of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, died suddenly in Smithville of apoplexy, Tuesday of this week.  He was a former resident of Smithville.

Dearest friend I canst be thou're gone? / We have seen thy form entombed / In that long and silent home / From which traveler ne'er returned.

Yes! we have seen thy noble form / In death's habiliments arrayed; / And while thy generous heart / Has forever ceased to throb / That far beyond death's alarm /Thy spirit hath winged its flight to God.

Thinkest thou that none are left, / Bitter tears to shed for thee? / Aye, let thy spirit's quickened powers / See the tears of sorrow fall, / And hear the deep drawn sigh / The sobs with which the air is rent.

Dearest friend, dost thou know / That thou hast still on earth / Friends who've watched thee, / E'en from thy birth? / Who taught thy infant feet to walk, / They prattling tongue / To lisp a mother's name?

Although thou art far removed / Beyond our earthly sphere, / Friends whom thou hast loved / Still hold thy memory dear.

Though thy body lies in the tomb, / And mingles with its mother dust, / For thee, no more, the roses bloom / Thy soul's enthroned in Heaven we trust; / and if we meet on earth no more / May we clasp hands on the other shore.

Where, when ten thousand years / Their silent race have run, / Our hymns of praise to God / Will have but just begun.

M.C.

News Item

Last week we mentioned the sad case of drowning of Wallace McConnell and N. Lee Bassett, two young men of Utica [Oneida Co. NY] in Oneida Lake on the 22d ult.  Search was kept up by the relatives of the deceased and others which has finally proved successful.  On Friday morning last the body of Young Bassett was discovered by his father, who was upon a steamer, engaged in the search.  The body was standing erect in about seven feet of water, the feet resting upon the ground, one arm was folded across the breast with the other hanging down by the side.  The face was not in a condition to be recognized, but it was identified by the clothing.  On Saturday morning the body of young McConnell was recovered by the party in search, who were on board a steamer.  In passing a certain point, one of the party left the steamer in a rowboat and in a few moments saw the body shoot up out of the water.  At the same time, it was seen by one on the steamer, who says the position of the body was upright and plain to be seen above the waist. Both bodies were taken to Utica, and the funeral was held on Monday afternoon.

LUTHER:  In Morris [Otsego Co. NY] July 23, Mr. Moses H. Luther aged 72 years and 7 months.

Last Wednesday at his residence on Grove Street, Mr. Moses H. Luther died.  He had not been feeling as well as usual the Sunday before and several times during the day took morphine, as was his custom when unwell.  He accidently took an overdose and soon lost consciousness.  It was so long before he could be aroused and being in a very weak state, it was impossible for his physician to save his life.  Mr. Luther has been a resident of this village about 30 years. during the last ten years of his life he had been continually failing, suffering from palsy and probably would not have lived a great while, even if he had recovered from this last prostration, being over 70 years of age.  He leaves a wife in this village, two sons, G.R. Luther in Iowa and W.H. Luther in Wisconsin, and one daughter in Cincinnatus, Cortland County [NY].

Death

The following particulars of the recent child murder at Richfield Springs [Otsego Co. NY] were furnished us by Coroner Robinson.  James Kenyon is an Englishman, aged about 54 years, of rather intemperate habits.  Five years ago, while laboring under an attack of delirium tremens, he attempted suicide by cutting his throat but unfortunately did not succeed.  Last week, he was at work in a hop yard in Richfield, showing a disposition to assault another person employed in the same yard.  Word was sent to Almon Ames, overseer of the poor of Richfield, who had previously had Kenyon in charge, that he must take him in custody.  On Monday morning last Mr. Ames took the fellow home with him and thought he would set him at work on his own place.  Mr. A.'s son Calvin was there with his wife and an only child, a boy just a year old.  Kenyon was left alone in the house with the two women and this child, when he seized upon the latter and by repeated blows on the floor killed it.  The skull was badly broken.  This occurred soon after he came to the house. The Coroner's jury rendered a verdict of "willful murder."  It is hardly necessary to add that Kenyon is, or pretends to be, deranged. That he is possessed of a temper the most ugly and devilish is very evident.  Freeman's Journal

Deaths

In New Lisbon [Otsego Co. NY] on Sunday evening, the 23d inst. after an illness of three hours, Mr. Edward Wright aged 56 years.

In Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] Sept. 22, Alexander B. [Perry] son of Jesse Perry, aged 2 years and 7 months.

At Gilboa Schoharie County [NY] on the 5th inst. of typhoid fever Robert Weismer aged 52 years.

Mr. W. was one of the oldest and most respected residents of Gilboa.  For years he carried on an extensive business and was well and widely known as a man of the strictest integrity and most honorable principles. Few men in the town commanded more respect or had more ardent and devoted friends.  In all the relations of life, either in his business walks or in his family circle, he was distinguished for his excellent qualities.  His death is a severe loss to the town, and a painful affliction to a large and interesting family, some of whom are now prostrated by the same disease which caused his death.  May God in his wisdom lay his healing hand upon the bereaved sufferers and spare them to offer consolation and support to the sorrowing widow and the youthful members of the broken flock.

Marriage

Our "elegant" friend, Elliot Danforth Esq. of Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY] perpetrated the following in his 4th of July speech at Sidney Plains [Delaware Cop. NY]:  "Five years ago today on the village green in your sister village, Bainbridge, I delivered an oration which resulted in my leading to the marriage altar, within six months from that time, one of Chenango's fairest daughters.  I mention this as a Fourth of July incident, which in my history at least, will probably never be repeated. That was a union of hands and a union of hearts.  Today we are to speak of a union of States."

Deaths

Henry P. Skinner for some ten years past a businessman here, died of scarlet fever Sabbath noon.  For a few years past, he had been of delicate constitution, and it required only slight disease to produce death. The funeral Tuesday afternoon was in charge of the Masonic Order, and representatives were present from neighboring lodges. The fire department and Dakin rifle association also turned out as organizations.  Mr. Skinner leaves a wife and three children to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father. As an enterprising upright businessman, he will be greatly missed.

Harry Heath a farmer living near Sidney Plains [Delaware Co. NY] was found dead yesterday in the hay field. As he was alone at the time of his death, the cause is as yet unknown.  It is thought to be a case of sunstroke.

Judge Paddock, of Malone [Franklin Co. NY], who occasionally visits at Mr. Mears's, lost a twelve-year-old son, Henry [Paddock] by drowning Tuesday.  Fred, another son, was severely injured a few days since by falling form a tree.
