BENNETT:  At her home in Durhamville [Oneida Co. NY], Mrs. John Bennett, in the 84th year of her age.

This estimable lady departed this life at her residence in Durhamville, March 1, 1872, being in the 84th year of her age.  Mrs. Bennett had lived in this vicinity many years and was beloved by all who knew her.  She possessed in an eminent degree a large share of the Christian graces, modest and unassuming in her manners, uniform and gentle in her disposition, she always preferred to look charitably rather than expose the -?- of her fellow beings.  Early in life she embraced the Christian religion and united with the Baptist church and although for the past few years her infirmities had rendered her unable to go to the house of worship, she ever felt a deep interest in the welfare of the church.  she leaves an aged husband, to whom she was devoted and with whom she lived for nearly sixty-five years, and a large family of children, most of whom are settled in Durhamville and Oneida, to mourn her loss. They often sought her advice while she was seated in the old armchair, and never went away without feeling happier and wiser for the counsel they received. But those tender ties of affection have been severed, and she has passed away from earthly sorrows and has entered into her heavenly mansion of rest.

Though at this day eulogy, by some, is considered as but common fame, yet it would be withholding a tribute justly due not to say that the many shining qualities of Judge Cooper are bright examples for imitation.  His enterprise, perhaps, without a parallel, has contributed more to the settlement and prosperity of this county than that of any other person and this village which so deservedly bears, and ought to perpetuate his name, remains as a monument of his public zeal and benevolent designs.  His friends, while they cease not to lament his death, will cherish with satisfaction the recollection of his virtues.  An afflicted family have to mourn the loss of his paternal care and affection, while the poor and unfortunate look in vain for their departed friend and benefactor.  His piety, for he was thoroughly persuaded of the truth of Revelation, was accompanied with the warmest benevolence to his fellow creatures.  No one could more strongly feel that the love to God was to be united with love to man.  Nor was this principle that rested in kind wishes and pathetic feelings for the happiness of others, but it was manifested in the most active exertions for their welfare.  No scheme of doing good was ever suggested to him, into which he did not enter with ardor.  But the generosity of his mind was most displayed in assisting the erection of places of Divine worship and in spreading the gospel among those who were strangers to it.  In these he took the lead and by his example he inspired others with the same spirit.  "Blessed are the charitable!"

____________________________

Another of our old and most respected citizens has gone down to the grave.  William McLean, Esquire, after a long and lingering illness which he bore with fortitude and Christian resignation, died last Sunday morning in this village [Cooperstown, Otsego Co. NY], in the seventy-fourth year of his age.  He was formerly a Citizen of Oneida County [NY] and printed and edited the first Newspaper which was published in that County.  The first number of this paper made its appearance, we believe, about the year 1795.  It was called "The Whitestown Gazette and Cate's Patrol."  How wonderful that the man who printed the first newspaper published in the great, rich and populous County of Oneida, was buried yesterday!  In 1818 he came to this village and commenced printing "The Cherry Valley Gazette," which he continued until the year 1831, when the management of it was transferred to his son, Charles McLean, Esq. the present Clerk of this County.  When Gen. Harrison was elected president in 1840, he was appointed Postmaster of this village, which office he held for four years.   About eighteen years ago, he was elected Town Clerk of Cherry Valley, and was, notwithstanding all the changes and fierce collisions of parties, unanimously re-elected by his neighbors and townsmen, until the last Town Meeting, when the state of his health did not permit him to be a candidate.  He was literally a wording man and was, when he commenced his career in life, a Federalist of the Washington School.  He never changed his principles.  It is remarkable that though during the most bitter political controversies he conducted for many years a party Newspaper, he has not left behind him a single personal enemy.

"A Wit's a feather, and a Chief's a rod, / An honest man's the noblest work of God."

Otsego Democrat, Cooperstown, NY, March 25, 1848

Deaths

In this village [Cooperstown, Otsego Co. NY] on the 1st inst. Celia S. [Fellows] eldest daughter of Rathbone R. and Celia C. Fellows, aged 5 years, 2 months and 15 days.

"He takes naught but what he gave, / And blessed be His name / For though her body's in the grave, / Her soul's gone whence it came.

With Jesus now she is at rest, / No sorrow does she know; / In heaven she'll be forever blest / Why with her here below?

O, God! prepare us all to greet / This sainted child in heaven / Grant us thy grace, and let us meet, / With all our sins forgiven.

"She's sleeping so sweetly, / Oh, there let her rest / With roses and lilies / Upon her pure breast / Though stars their lone vigils / Keep o'er the tomb, / Her soul is rejoicing / In Eden's bright bloom.

In life's early morning / There came the sure token, / The silver cord loosed / The golden bowl broken. / But sure was the anchor / Across the dark river, / Her refuge was Jesus, / The blessed life giver.

Then mourn not for Mary, / For sweetly she'll rest, / In Eden's fair bowers / The home of the blest. / She'll join in the anthems / The angel lands sing, / And weave the sweet garlands / the shining ones bring.

Oh, weep not for Mary / She'll joyfully wait / To meet you in glory, / At Eden's bright gate. / Where wait the soft zephyr / That fragrantly roam, / Sweet music to welcome / The loved ones home.

Death

On Saturday evening last, Harriet Elizabeth Foote daughter of General Frederick P. Foote of this town [Delhi, Delaware Co. NY], aged seventeen years.  Last summer saw her apparently in health.  Her decline became visible at the commencement of autumn and at the approach of winter terminated rapidly in death.  She possessed in an uncommon degree the attractive graces and amiable manners which make youth beloved and render it peculiarly and touchingly interesting in its lapse to the tomb.  A life of spotless innocence spent in the practice of virtues early inculcated by the purest precept and example will console her afflicted friends with the belief that she has gone to a better world.

Marriage

In Walton [Delaware Co. NY] on Tuesday the 22d inst. by the Rev. Isaac Headley, Capt. Platt Townsend to Miss Abigail Mead daughter of Mr. Allen Mead, all of that place.

Deaths

Died at Franklin [Delaware Co. NY] on the 21st inst. of a consumption, Mrs. Betsy Case, wife of Roger Case, Esq. aged 45 years.  Mrs. Case was distinguished for exemplary piety and endearing behavior. She possessed a most amiable disposition and from her kindness and benevolence, she was ever ready to afford relief to the poor and needy. She was an affectionate wife, a kind and tender mother and to her husband and children, her loss is irreparable.  Mrs. Case was a member of the Presbyterian Church and during her sickness her mind often rose superior to her infirmities and bespoke the steadfast purpose of her soul. The thought of death, which often appalls the ungodly, produced in her a glow of animation.  She seemed to view it as the gate of endless day and dying but going home, believing it far greater riches to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasure of sin for a season.

Gradually, yet patiently and tranquilly she sank under the increasing weight of disease and her immortal spirit unfettered and enlarged, winged its way to regions of everlasting bliss, to unite with the "spirits of just men made perfect," to the everlasting enjoyment of those good things which God hath prepared and laid up in store of those that love him.

"The world can never give / The bliss for which we sigh; / 'Tis not the whole of life to live, / Nor all of death to die.

Beyond this vale of tears, / There is a life above, / Uncumbered by the flight of years, / And all that life is love."

Withered Flowers

It is sad to witness the work of the chill frost in a beautiful garden, but infinitely more sorrowful when bright and lovely buds of promise - the loved and loving children - are smitten by the destroyer Death.

The Sabbath School at East Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] was like a beautiful garden.  Around its blooming plants twined strongest and tenderest cords of love, but diphtheria came, and one by one the flowers drooped and died.

The home garland of Philip Matthewson was composed of five lovely children.  Who can tell with what love and pride they were regarded, what fond hopes were bound up in that bright circlet?  Only one of that fair garland remains. The others are transplanted to the heavenly gardens.  The family of Austin Miller comprised six beloved children.  They had seen their companions falling around them till they had come to regard the diphtheria as the death angel.  Charley [Miller], aged eleven, was the first one stricken.  He was a child of remarkable intelligence, seeming to understand the words of divine truth almost by intuition.  When he felt the grasp of the disease upon his throat, he called for water.  After tasting it, he sent a glass to his sick mother, and to everyone who entered the room he offered the pure water.  Was it in memory of Him who once said "Drink ye all of it?"  Be that as it may, Charley soon went to drink of the "water of life," in the beautiful city of God. Thither his little sister, aged seven, soon followed him, saying, "I am going to Charley, but there are so many people in heaven I'm afraid I can't find him."  So many - yes, and soon the pet of the household, a dear little boy of three years, joined the company.  Three on earth, and three in Heaven.  One day the circle shall be joined again, but now there are lonely homes, and the Sabbath School is like a deserted garden, its fairest flowers withered and dead.  But, unlike the withered flowers of earth, these sweet blossoms only felt the death chill as a signal to take on forms of immortal glory and beauty which they now wear in the garden of the Lord, where Christ the Savior is the gardener, and where the chill breath of the Destroyer shall be felt nevermore.  E.J.R.

Broome Republican, Binghamton, NY, September 28, 1837

Deaths

On the 25th of August last, near Peoria (Illinois) Mr. Lewis Squires aged 60 years, and on the 6th inst. Mr. Barzilai Gray aged 36 years.  In noticing the death of these individuals, we are forcibly reminded of the uncertainty of life.  Mr. Squires was one of our most respected citizens, having been a resident of this village [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] from an early day.  About a year since he removed to the state of Illinois, where he has now been called to bid adieu to all earthly scenes.  Mr. Gray was reared in our midst and bid fair for a long life of usefulness.  He bade us adieu with prospects truly flattering.  But the destroyer came, and the earth now covers his remains.

At Fairfield (Conn.) on the 20th instant, Samuel Rowland, Esq. father of the Rev. Mr. Rowland, of Union in this county [Broome Co. NY], in the 69th year of his age.

Broome Republican, Binghamton, NY, October 5, 1837

Death

Died at New Orleans on the 13th ult., Mr. William Wallace Whitney, son of Gen. Joshua Whitney, of this village [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY], aged 27 years.  The deceased was for many years afflicted by a pulmonary complaint, which induced him to spend most of his time in southern climates.  Since his marriage with the daughter of the late Daniel Clark, of New Orleans, he has been assiduously engaged in prosecuting her claims to the immense estate left by her father.  He was so engaged at the time of his last and fatal sickness by the yellow fever.

Mr. Whitney, at an early period of his life, gave promise of superior moral and intellectual attainments and, although his progress was greatly checked by disease, he nevertheless acquired such a fund of general and useful information as well fitted him for all the duties and associations of refined life.  He moreover possessed in a high degree those manly and social virtues which secured to him the respect of strangers and endeared him to his friends.  Few of any age have left this world more faultless than the subject of this imperfect tribute and the memory of his virtues will long be cherished in the place of his nativity.  He has left an amiable widow and two interesting children, now in New Orleans, who will receive in a peculiar degree the sympathies of a numerous circle of relatives and friends.

Broome Republican, Binghamton, NY, October 19, 1837

Deaths

Died in the town of Conklin [Broome Co. NY] on Sunday last, of consumption, Mr. Lucius D. Russ aged 17 years and 7 months.

The death of Mr. Wm. Wm. Whitney formerly of this village [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] is thus noticed in the New Orleans Commercial Bulletin:

"He was born in the year 1810 in Broome County in the State of New York, and was the son of Gen. Joshua Whitney, of Binghamton in that State.  He has left a bereaved wife and two children to mourn an irreparable loss.  The deceased came to this city about three years ago, for the purpose of prosecuting the claim of his wife, as the legal heir of the late Daniel Clarke, to a very large estate; to recover which a suit is now pending here, in the United States District Court.

He was preparing to leave the city for the purpose of returning to New York, but-- "Death rides on every passing breeze, / He lurks in every flower, / Each season has its own disease, / Its peril every hour."

The most regular and exemplary habits have marked his sojourn in this city, and though he mingled but little in society or the busy scenes of life, yet it may afford some consolation to his absent friends to know, that notwithstanding he sleeps among strangers, the mildness of his disposition and suavity of manners had won for him many friends who mourn his premature fate, and in whose memory he will long live.  The subject of this notice, as a son and a brother, was all the relation required - as a husband, affectionate and tender - as a father, kind and indulgent - as a friend, ardent and sincere.

He possessed the finest natural endowments and received all the advantages of an early education.  He cherished the utmost philanthropy and his greatest ambition was to do good.  From these qualities his family and friends had treasured in their bosoms, the most sanguine hopes of his rising worth and usefulness.  To commemorate the virtues of the dead is a duty which we owe not only to them, but to the living, and this we can only do by recording the amiable qualities of those who have descended to the tomb not only as an example to those who survive but as a gratification to the friends and relatives of departed worth.  Actuated by a desire to perform the last sacred attachment, the writer feels a gloomy pleasure in attempting to call to mind those engaging features of character which bound together in ties of friendship and love, hearts which have only been separated for a time by the relentless hand of death.  If the friends of the deceased mourn, it is not without hope; for they believe they shall be united to him again in regions of unalloyed felicity, the animating hope of this life and the glorious promise of the next."

Broome Republican, Binghamton, NY, October 26, 1837

Deaths

Died in this village [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] on Monday morning last, Mr. Albert Orser aged about 42 years.

At Sherman, St. Joseph's County, Michigan, on the 10th inst. Mr. James McKinney, postmaster at that place and formerly of this village [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY].

Deaths

OLNEY:  In Columbus [Chenango Co. NY] on the 23d inst., Hon. Josiah G. Olney, aged 86 years.

Another of the old "landmarks" has gone - a pioneer has fallen.  Mr. Olney died on the 23d inst. at the advanced age of 86, at his home where he had lived for seventy years or more.  By his death the last connecting link in the town of Columbus between the past and present generation is broken.  He was a man of culture, a friend of education, an apt teacher, an honest man "the noblest work of God." While he made little pretension to religion, his life was full of its fruits. The poor always found relief at his hands.  Benevolence, just dealing, the promotion of peace, marked his course in life.  He represented his county in the Assembly in 1839 and held various offices of honor and trust in his town.  Few live so many years and leave a better record.  As a result of his frugality, a handsome estate is left to his heirs.  T.G.L.

Mr. Alonzo Van Wagner of this town died July 16, 1878, aged 66 years, 11 months and 24 days.

Mr. Van Wagner was born in Dutchess Co. N.Y. July 22, 1811 and came to Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY] in 1829, where he has since lived an honored citizen and kind and obliging neighbor.  For the last ten years he has been a great sufferer from a painful disease which has slowly but surely carried him to the grave.  He was converted to God many years ago and though not identifying himself with any religious body has been interested in the prosperity of Zion.  He has been anxious for some time to receive his summons to depart and has found his trial in waiting God's time Truly for him "to die" was "gain."  He leaves a family, and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss.  B.F.M.  Sherburne, N.Y., July 26, 1878
