A Silver Wedding:  Mr. and Mrs. W.N. Mason? of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] on Friday evening last, it being the 25th anniversary of their marriage, gave at their residence a very elegant and agreeable entertainment, on which occasion, much and truly to their surprise, they found themselves most liberally supplied with silver tokens of esteem.  Among other costly and valuable presents was an entire silver tea set, the joint offering of a few personal friends.  The articles were as gracefully received as they were unexpectedly and appropriately presented, and the whole affair passed off with all the pleasure and happiness that spring from the recurrence of these amenities of a refined and cultivated social life.

In Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], at his residence, on the morning of Sunday, Aug. 25th, Sidney L. Starr, aged 49 years.  The death of one so well and favorably known as the subject of this notice would seem to call for something more than the simple announcement of his decease.  Born upon the spot where he died and living there to full manhood, he had become so completely identified with the social and business relations of his native village, that his death has made an unusual impression on his friends and neighbors.  Generous, almost to a fault, kindhearted and sympathetic, he won the good will of all who knew him, and it will be long before he will be forgotten by the many recipients of his kindness.  His illness was a long but almost painless one, running over about a year and a half.  His naturally vigorous constitution gradually gave way to the slow wasting of disease. Throughout all his tedious illness he never uttered a complaint, and death came upon him like a gentle sleep. The widow and other surviving friends have the sympathies of our whole community.

Death Contradicted:  We last week published on the authority of a letter from New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY], a notice of the death of Edgar J. Arnold, a young man of that place.  Mr. Arnold has since written to us, contradicting the report of his decease, and pronouncing himself alive and well. The hoax, by whomsoever perpetrated, was a very stupid and senseless one, and the author, if he could be discovered would receive the execration of the public.

Oxford, Sept. 4, 1867:  A severe thunderstorm passed over this village about 3 o'clock this morning.  The lightning struck a house on State Street.  A Mrs. Godfrey, who was sleeping with her husband on the third floor, arose to shut the widow, when the lightning struck the house directly over the window, killing her instantly.  Her husband, who was asleep, was not aware of the occurrence until aroused by the other occupants of the building.  The house was badly injured, but not burned.  Mrs. Godfrey had been a widow but was married about ten days since.

A woman shot:  Between five and six o'clock on Sunday last, the startling rumor spread through the village that a woman serving as a domestic in the family of Edward Clark, Esq., had been accidently killed by a young German also in his employ.  The name of the woman was Alice Carrew; that of the boy, who is 18 years old, Edward Hanitzsch. Coroner Blodgett immediately summoned a jury, when the following facts were made known.  A shot gun had been kept loaded in the barn, and occasionally used by the gardener to shoot skunks.  Eight days previous this boy had fired off the gun and put it back without reloading.  Finding it in this condition, the gardener loaded it again.  The boy says he did not think the gun was loaded, and he pointed it at the girl he killed and another female domestic with her at the time, for the purpose of frightening them, and the reason he fired at Alice was because she was frightened.  The muzzle of the gun was very near her body when it went off, and the charge of shot bruised her arm and entered her side, killed her almost instantly. The jury found a verdict to the effect that "the discharge of the gun by Hanitzsch was accidental and not done with the intention of causing the girl's death but was an act of gross carelessness on his part.  Cooperstown Journal

His spirit now is clothed in white, / And he an angel, pure and bright; / He claps his hands and shouts for joy. / Our noble, much loved Murray boy.

In Coventry [Chenango Co., NY], on Sunday morning, August 4th, Mrs. Betsey [Jones], wife of Horace Jones, Esq., aged 54 years.  The circumstances attending the death of the deceased were most sad and trying. A kind and charitable neighbor, a tender ad affectionate mother, an earnest Christian and truly estimable woman, her loss would have been deeply lamented by a large circle of friends and neighbors under any circumstances.  But the peculiarity of her death added much to the sadness of the occasion of her funeral, and to the sympathy felt for the bereaved husband and family.  She had been for some time suffering under an attack of insanity, brought on by grief over the death of a lovely and fondly beloved daughter.  She had threatened to take her own life, but the care and watchfulness of her friends had prevented her from committing any violence upon herself, until on Saturday, the 3d inst. when she managed to elude their vigilance long enough to procure and take a dose of arsenic, which proved fatal.  After it was known what she had done, every effort was made to annul the effects of the poison; but it was too late before the discovery was made, for anything to be done effectually.

At White Store [Chenango Co. NY] August 4th, 1867, Annis Ketchum, daughter of Eli and Nancy Ketchum, aged 2 years, 11 months and 23 days.

I had a little darling girl, / As fair as any flower; / she gladdened me a little while, / Then left me one dark hour! / I fain would lie down by her side-- / I'm lonely now, since Annis died!

She lay within her cot at rest, / And softly drew her breath; / One look, one gasp--Twas over then-- / She'd passed away in Death!

We laid her down beneath the grass, / Young flowers will soon grow o'er; / We'll water with our mournful tears, / We daily on them pour.

I'll often cry out, in my dreams-- / "Oh wake! my darling wake!" / I look into her little crib, / And think my heart will break!

The sun, he shines as bright as e'er, / The trees in beauty wave; / But oh! they cannot charm my heart / From one green, tiny grave!

They tell me she is happy now, / With holy babes above; / I know it all--but cannot calm / This yearning mother love.

Killed by Lightning:  A lad by the name of Coon, aged some 16 years, son of Cuyler Coon, of Lincklaen [Chenango Co., NY], was killed by lightning on Tuesday of last week.  The circumstances, as near as we can learn them, are these.  Young Coon was in the employ of Robert Stanton of that town, and with others, not far from 6 o'clock, went out to do the milking, the cows being yarded quite a distance from the house. The rain coming down heavily at that time, the party deferred milking and withdrew for shelter, Coon going, as it was supposed, to his father's, who lived not very far off. After dark, upon inquiry, it was learned that he had not been to his father's nor had he been seen by anyone.  Search was immediately made, when with no marks of violence, or the least scratch upon his person he was found dead in the field. The earth was freshly torn up near by, which takin in connection with the heavy claps of thunder, particularly noticeable during the shower, and which it was remarked, must have struck in the neighborhood, leave no doubt as to the cause of his death.

Another of our leading citizens has gone to his rest.  David E.S. Bedford, long one of our most enterprising and successful merchants, died at his residence in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Saturday, the 10th inst., at the age of 68.  Mr. Bedfored was born in the city of Albany, in 1799, from which place, when still a youth, he went to Wilmington, N.C. for a few years.  Returning to Albany, where he was married, he came to Norwich in 1820, making this his home during the remainder of his long and useful life.  Always actively engaged in business, he ever maintained a high character for probity and honor.  In all his affairs he was precise and scrupulous, but at the same time liberal and just.  Few men are better trained in the rules and methods of an honorable business career than he was, and fewer still are more capable of carrying on with system and exactness enterprises of magnitude.  Mr. Bedford's health had for some years been on the decline, and a year ago last spring he felt compelled to retire from all active pursuits.  No improvement followed his relinquishment of business, but on the contrary he continued to fail, and on Monday of this week all that was mortal of him was consigned by his relatives, friends and townsmen to its native dust.  Thus, passes away one who has for many years been a conspicuous member of our community--one who was endeared to his community--and who was universally respected and esteemed by the people among whom he lived and died, for his exemplary Christian character and virtues.

Death of Rev'd Arthur Burtis, D.D.

Oxford Times, April 3, 1867

We regret the sad duty which calls us to notice the death of Rev'd Arthur Burtis, which occurred at Oxford, Ohio, on the 23d ult. of inflammation of the bowels, after a brief illness.  Doctor Burtis was formerly settled over the Presbyterian Church in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], and removed from here rather more than twenty years since. While here Doctor Burtis was held in high esteem as a profound scholar, and a Christian gentleman, with which he united varied learned and social qualities of a high order. The following sketch of the deceased from the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser, is a worthy tribute to the memory of one, by whose death religion and learning have lost an able champion, and which leaves a void which may not be easily filled.

Dr. Burtis was born in the city of New York, on the 25th day of October 1807.  His father, after whom he was named, was quite a prominent citizen of New York, having been one of its ten Governors during the Revolution.  By his efforts the city was placed in a state of defense against the British.  The son, the subject of this brief sketch, graduated at Union College in 1827.  Among his classmates were Joseph law, brother of George Law, Judge Campell, of Otsego Co., John J. Sisco, Preston King and the late Hon. George P. Barker of this city [Buffalo, NY].  In his room at college the well-known secret society, "Kappa Alpha" was originated, the above named classmates of his, Chancellor Walworth, and a few others, being engaged with him in its inception.  After Mr. Burtis graduated, the meetings were held in the room of Hon. Elijah Ford, of this city.  He studied law under Chancellor Kent, at Columbia College, and received his theological education at the Auburn Seminary.  He began to preach in 1834, being connected with the Presbyterian denomination.  He was first settled at Little Falls, next Binghamton, then Fort Plan, Oxford and Vernon, all in this State [NY].  From Vernon he came to this city, in 1847, and was pastor of the Frist Presbyterian Church here for two years.  He afterwards took charge successively of the South and Tabernacle Presbyterian Churches of Buffalo, and, when the latter was broken up, became Secretary of the American and Foreign Christian Union.  In this occupation, being also engaged in fitting young men for college, he continued until last September, when he accepted the Chair of professor of Greek in the university at Oxford, Ohio.  His family did not leave the city with him but were soon to join him.

The deceased was held in high estimation as a Christian, a scholar, and a citizen and his death will be deeply lamented by the large number of our citizens who knew and respected him.

Soldier's Letter, Civil War, November 1863

Chenango Telegraph, Norwich, NY, November 25, 1863

Letter from 114th New York Infantry Regiment

Vermillion River, La. Nov. 5, 1863

As I before told you, whenever anything of interest occurred you should not be wanting of information.  On Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 2 P.M., General Burridge's Brigade, a portion of the 18th Army Corps, encamped at Carrion Crow Bayou, twelve miles above Vermillion, was attacked by about four thousand mounted rebels.  It was rather a surprise and Burridge's men were driven from their camp. The rebels succeeded in capturing, destroying and scattering a greater portion of the camp equipage.  Gen. Washburn reinforced Burridge and the enemy was driven back, not however until he had given us a sharp fight.

Most of the fighting was in the woods.  The 18th Corps became masters of the position. One hundred of the enemy's dead were left on the field, but he succeeded in carrying off his wounded.  Our loss was forty killed and sixty wounded. An exchange of wounded was effected on the day following. We took about one hundred prisoners; the rebels about five hundred. The 19th Corps, which was encamped on Vermillion River, was turned out under arms at 1 A.M., Wednesday, and marched rapidly to the scene of the fight, as another fight was expected at daylight today.  It arrived at Carrion Crow at 7 A.M., remained there until this morning (Nov. 5).  No hostile attitude being assumed by the enemy it returned to its late quarters on Vermillion River. The 13th Corps likewise came down to Vermillion, two miles above the river. These are the facts in the case.  View them as you will.  Lay the blame where you choose.  Gen. Wietzel informed Col. Per Lee that he thought it disgraceful to our arms, and the result of carelessness and want of caution, if not neglect of duty of those in the front. The day has been very wet and unpleasant, and the troops are very tired, but will soon forget in sleep the weary march to Carrion Crow, fully resolved that Weitzel's old Brigade could never had not been caught napping.

Shot by the Indians, June 27th, 1867, about forty miles beyond Julesburg Colorado, Mr. James Nelson Dimock of Bainbridge, Chenango Co., N.Y., aged 31 years.

The deceased was a son of Brown Dimock, formerly of Burlington, Otsego Co. [NY], but at present residing in Bainbridge, Chenango Co. [NY].  He was a young man of quiet, modest and unassuming manners, but resolute and energetic in business.  He had been for some years upon our extreme western frontier, traveling among and trading with the Indians.  On several occasions he had been with our government agents, assisting them to conduct their trains which conveyed the goods that they were to deliver to various tribes of Indians.  During last winter he paid a short visit to his parents and friends in the east, but hurried back to the west again, in the latter part of March, on account of the sickness of his uncle, with whom he was now engaged in the trading business. At the time of his death he was with this uncle (Mr. Nelson Dimock formerly of Burlington, N.Y.) conducting a train conveying merchandise from Julesburg to Denver, Colorado. When about forty miles beyond Julesburg, it being near night, he took one man with him and rode ahead of the train, to look for a camping ground for the night. After proceeding about one-mile from the train, they found themselves completely surrounded by Indians, and their retreat cut off. They turned and endeavored to fight their way back to their friends.  Immediately the alarm was given through the train, and others started to their rescue.  When they came in sight, these two men were engaged in a desperate hand-to-hand fight with the Indians; but before they could render any assistance, young Dimock fell pierced through the body by an arrow, with another thrust deep into his side.  He lived about one hour after his friends reached him.  His first words were, "They have caught me now, uncle; but I have always been so lucky that I had become careless."  Besides a father and mother, now bereaved of their last child, he leaves a loving wife to mourn his loss.

Farewell, dear girl, thy toils are o'er, / Thy transient life is sped; / We'll see thy face on earth no more, Thou sleep'st among the dead.

No more can sickness, pain or grief / Thy tender frame come o'er; / From sorrow, too, thou find'st relief, / Upon that blissful shore.

Asleep in Jesus! Oh, how sweet! / No fear, no woe, shall dim that hour. / Securely shall thy ashes lie, / And wait the summons from on high.
