In Hartwick [Otsego Co. NY] Dec. 31st, Mrs. Irene Potter wife of Mr. Irving Potter, aged 38 years.
The disease that terminated the mortal existence of this valuable citizen, was inflammation of the lungs. Her sickness was short, but severe; yet borne with Christian patience. The deceased was a native of Hartwick village. When about seventeen years of age, she became a subject of divine grace, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist Church in her native village by Rev. Nathan Bundy, then pastor of the church. In the fellowship of this church, she lived and died., esteemed for her uniform and prudent course of life. She lived with her husband about 22 years, leaving her companion and 2 children to mourn her loss. It is not too much to say of a deceased friend, that she was an affectionate wife, a kind mother, an obliging neighbor and a consistent Christian. After five days of suffering she peacefully fell asleep in Jesus. Her funeral was attended Jan 2d by a large congregation, when her Pastor, Rev. J.B Pixley, preached a sermon from 2 Peter, 2 chap. 9 verse, "The Lord knoweth how to deliver the Godly."

We learn that a man named Bowen a resident of Cooperstown [Otsego Co. NY] and a harness maker by trade, was drowned in the Lake at Cooperstown on Friday night last and as we learn them, the following are the circumstances: He in company with others went upon the ice for the purpose of fishing and after setting his hooks started for shore and instead of keeping near the shore as did his companions, he ventured to go directly off, and the ice being very thin broke through, and it was snowing so fast and was so blustering that his companions could not find him, but could hear his crises. He was found in forty feet of water on Saturday. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his untimely death.

The friends and acquaintances of Edgar W. Olin, Esq. who left our village for Wisconsin about two years since, will learn with profound regret that he is dead. He died at Baraboo on the 31st ult. after a brief illness. His characteristics, both intellectual and moral, were of the most promising kind, and while they secured the affection of his circle of personal acquaintances, they commanded the respect of all. That they were right in anticipating an honorable and useful career for their young friend is apparent from the testimony borne by his recent associates to his worth as a man and his merits as an aspirant to professional honors. That his career in his new home had been so distinguished by energy and public spirit, and by the exhibition of so many personal and professional excellences as are ascribed to him by his western friends in the testimonials below, is a source of gratification to his friends here, and of consolation under this painful bereavement. Girard Pa. Republican of Nov. 27.
Death of Edgar W. Olin: It is with pain that we record this week the death of our young and talented County Clerk, Edgar W. Olin, who died on Saturday last of a disease of the brain. His illness was short, having been confined to his bed only two weeks previous to his death; although he had at times for several months past suffered from pain in the head, only until one week before the sad event occurred where his symptoms such as to give evidence of a fatal character.
Mr. Olin, during his short residence of ten months in this village, had endeared himself to a large circle of friends and won the respect of all with whom he had dealings. During the short period of his illness anxiety was felt for his recovery even by those who were but casually acquainted with him, and the announcement of his death, though not unexpected to those in this immediate neighborhood, was heard with grief by all.
From our personal acquaintance with the deceased, we feel qualified to bear testimony to his nobility of character, his unusual powers of intellect, his unflinching firmness and his perfect integrity. these qualifications, together with temperate and regular habits of life, and a courteous dignity of manner peculiarly fitted him for the responsible station which he so faithfully filled. For his years, the deceased was remarkedly well read, especially in the history of the great political issues of the day. A retentive memory and diligent study had made him master of a greater amount of facts and arguments upon questions of public policy or morals than we remember ever to have met with anywhere else in one so young. Yet the arena of politics did not receive his exclusive attention. The standard authors in literature and philosophy possessed strong attractions for his active and comprehensive mind, and a well stored intellect repaid his indefatigable labors in the pursuit of knowledge. His leading trait, however, we may perhaps say, was his intellectuality which was manifested in his choice of reading, of associates, and in his conversation. His very unusual promise in this respect betokened a brilliant future, which a wiser Power has seen fit to unfold in another world.
In the three told capacity of public officer, citizen and friend, the loss of Mr. Olin will be widely and deeply felt. He died in the faithful discharge of his official duties and leaves behind him an enviable name for mental vigor and manly deportment, an unblemished reputation and an elevating influence in both public and private life. Baraboo Republic
Edgar W Olin was a brother to the Rev Wm. Olin, who formerly resided in this village [Oneonta, Otsego Co. NY]
