Death of C. Starr Bailey:  A correspondent of the New Berlin Pioneer, writing from Columbus, speaks of the death of this gentleman as follows:  Rev. Charles Starr Bailey, a talented clergyman of the Universalist denomination, died in Morris, Otsego Co. [NY], on the 31st ult., at the age of thirty-four.  Although our community was startled at the suddenness of this event, still, much anxiety had been recently felt in regard to his recovery from a severe attack of congestion and hemorrhage of the lungs.  For a number of years he had been frequently subject to severe attacks of the asthma.  During the summer of 1855, he came to this section, from the south, in the capacity of a lecturer on the subject of temperance.  He was at that time we believe, in the employ of the Pennsylvania State Temperance Organization, and had come north for the benefit of his health.  Soon after, he was employed to take the pastoral charge of the Columbus Universalist Society, which he continued to fill up to the time of his death.  He was also pastor of the Universalist Society in Morris, at the time of his decease.

The Death of Young cook at Unadilla [Otseog Co., NY]:  A correspondent of the Franklin Visitor, gives the following circumstantial account of this sad affair, which differs materially from one published last week:  William T. Cook, the father of Felix [Cook], had three or four men employed in building an "eelwire" in the Susquehanna River opposite our village, on Friday the 12th of this month.  Felix, aged eight years, and Louis, a brother of seven years of age, with several of the neighboring boys of similar age, were most of the day witnessing the construction of said "wire," and, as the evidence showed were walking or swimming in the river a good portion of the time. That the men engaged in building the "wire" had a bottle containing whiskey, from which they frequently drank and from which they allowed the boys to drink, but did not urge them to drink.  That by 5 o'clock p.m. Felix was sadly intoxicated and Louis but little better; that between five and six o'clock the boys came to the house, when Felix was found by his mother so intoxicated as to be unable to stand without help; that his mother bathed him in warm water, then, having administered to all his wants as only a mother can do, put him to bed; that about 9 o'clock in the evening he came down stairs for a drink of water, after which he returned to bed; that between the hours of 12 and 1 o'clock in the morning the parents were aroused by an elder brother with whom Felix was sleeping' that on going to his bed Felix was found in a state of spasmodic insensibility; that Dr. G.L. Halsey was immediately called, whose eminent skill was ineffectual in restoring consciousness, and that Felix remained in this spasmodic state until between the hour of three and four o'clock in the morning, when he died.

Chenango Telegraph, Norwich, NY, August 10, 1859

A tragedy of the most fearful nature occurred in the town of Hamden (Fuller's Hollow) [Delaware Co., NY] on Tuesday night of last week, in the killing of her only son, William [Gow], By Mrs. Margaret Gow.  The deceased and his mother, who is a widow, kept house together.  He was about 25 years of age, and is said to have been a stout, athletic young man.  Mrs. Gow has given frequent and unmistakable evidence of insanity for a long time' and so determined have been her threats that she would kill her children, that a daughter had been compelled from fear to leave her mother's roof, and was living at the time of the homicide at Mr. Robert Middlemast's in Franklin. The son had also been in the habit of well securing his bedroom door on retiring at night, fearing that his mother would enter in stealthily and endeavor to carry out her threats, in which, indeed she had been detected, as we learn by a young man who had sometimes slept with the deceased.  On the fatal night it is supposed he had forgotten to fasten it.  From some suspicious appearance at the house the neighbors entered it on Wednesday morning, when the terrible spectacle of the murdered man presented itself. The body was lying in bed, the head terribly mangled by severe blows from a slung-shot made by tying a heavy stone in the foot of a stocking, which was found lying on the floor of the room.  There were two severe contusions on one side of the head, and one on the other. The skull was so much fractured as to permit a large piece being removed, exposing the brain to view. After committing the fatal deed she had carefully laid out the dead body, by washing the blood from it and placing a clean napkin under the head, upon the pillow, and a clean coverlid upon the bed; the side of the head least disfigured was also placed uppermost. This act accomplished, and having evidently tried to wash the blood from the floor, doors, &c, the unfortunate woman at once left the terrible scene bent on carrying out her tragic designs to the fullest extent.  She at once repaired to the locality where her daughter lived (Mr. Middlemast's) and then in the woods looking towards the house watched for an opportunity to slay her daughter, having first supplied herself with another slung-shot like that with which  she killed her son, which was found upon her, as also a clean sheet and napkin, with which she no doubt intended to lay her out also after killing her.  There was certainly much method in the homicide's madness.

Death of a Promising Young Man:  Lewis N. Burdick, son of J.L. Burdick, formerly a resident of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], in this county, died at the residence of his father, in New York, on the 7th inst., of consumption.  Mr. Burdick learned the printing business at the office of the Chenango Telegraph, in Norwich.  From thence he went to Utica, and while there was engaged in the publication of a literary paper.  He afterwards went to New York, where he acquired much celebrity as a promising and vigorous writer.   Many of the best told stories afloat in the papers, were the product of his pen.  His labors, however, were too severe for his frail constitution, and he has thus early yielded to the destroyer.  We were playmates in our youth, and though later years have separated us, we feel a bitter pang at his untimely end.  He was about 27 years of age.

Quaint Epitaph:  We have seen, from time to time, various queer epitaphs in print, but the following, which now is, and has been for many a year, upon a tombstone in a grave yard at Cincinnatus, in Cortland Co. [NY], strikes us as being one of the most labored efforts in that line that we have ever witnessed:

"Anna Cruttenden was her name, / America was her nation, / Cincinnatus was her dwelling place / And Christ was her Salvation.

Now she is dead and in her grave, / Till all her bones are rotten, / If this you see, let her remembered be, / And never be forgotten.

The rose is red and grass is green; / And days are past which she has seen, / And days to come we all remember, / That Jesus Christ was her great redeemer."

Died:  In Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], on the 7th inst., Mr. Thomas L. Leonard, aged 31 years.

Died:  In Preston [Chenango Co., NY], on the 3d inst. of congestion of the lungs, Albert A. Hough, aged 32 years.  A widowed mother mourns for thee; / Her dear, her only son, / Thy young wife's sorrowing face we see, / and hear a sister's moan.  / Thy kind and loving voice no more / Will friends and kindred cheer, / Oh God of mercy, we implore / Thine aid--to us draw near. / A mother's agonizing cry, / A young wife's sad low moan; / the sorrowing and lone. / God of unbounded love and might, / Thou dost but wound to heal, / Dispel the gloom of sorrow's night, / Thy love and truth reveal.

Died:  At the residence of his father in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co., NY], on the 2d inst., Benjamin S. Miller, A.M. aged 32 years.  It is seldom that we have to record the death of one in whom blended so beautifully all that could make life desirable, with so much that makes death hopeful.  It was our privilege to have known him in the confidence of a friendship unmarred by a single recollection that could ruffle the serenity of its repose.  We knew him in his boyhood, pure, simple and sincere, at the Academy, where correct and graceful scholarship were united with a character so unassuming and earned that envy was disarmed before it, at College, where faithful performance of every duty, and cheerful submission to every rule, secured alike the respect and confidence of teachers, and the admiration of friends and classmates, and in the world, which strengthened and developed whatever was pure and noble in a nature which it could not harden or corrupt.  Having graduated with honor at Yale College, in the summer of 1847, Mr. Miller devoted himself to Teaching for several years, in his native State and at the South, a profession in which his character and acquirements made him justly successful. He had more recently and for some time been employed in the survey and construction of a Canal in North Carolina, and as was his wont, had returned to his native village for a change and rest, preparatory to resuming his labors.  A kind Providence ordered that the home of his youth should be but a way station in his journey to a better country, and compensated sorrowing friends by snatching a jewel from earth to make Heaven more attractive.  "Over the River they beckon to me, / Loved ones who've crossed to the otherside, / The gleam of their snowy robes I see; / But their voices are lost in the dashing tide, / Yet somewhere I know on the unseen shore, / They watch, and beckon, and wait for me.

Sudden Death:  Mr. Harmon Carpenter, an old resident of this town [New Berlin, Chenango Co., NY] aged 49 years, met with a sudden death on Thursday of this week.  He was on a load of bark, just the other side of the river, when by some means he fell off, got up and walked about ten feet, and fell.  He was brought to his residence in this village, and died in about five minutes after his arrival.  New Berlin Pioneer.

Vital Records, Norwich, NY - July 1859

Chenango Telegraph, Norwich, NY, July 6, 1859

COOLEY:  In Plymouth [Chenango Co., NY], June 26th, Ezra H. Cooley, infant son of Robert J. and Olive R. Cooley, aged six months.

The trial of Patrick McNamara took place at Cooperstown [Otsego Co., NY] on Wednesday for the murder of his wife, in Richfield [Otsego Co., NY], last December.  The jury brought in a verdict of manslaughter in the first degree.  In the whole catalogue of crime in this country, there cannot be found a more cruel murder than that committed by McNamara, and the jury must have forgotten their oaths in finding him guilty of any other crime.  His wife was but sixteen years old and he got drunk one night and beat her to death. The proof of his guilt was positive.

Chenango Telegraph, Norwich, NY, July 13, 1859

CRANDALL:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on the 6th inst., Willie A. [Crandall], son of Latham and Sophia Crandall, aged 3 months and 14 days.

A little girl, daughter of John R. Whitehouse of Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], dropped her doll into a cistern last Thursday, and in endeavoring to recover it, lost her balance and fell into the water herself.  Before the child was missed, she had drowned, although her body was taken out in a very few minutes.

Chenango Telegraph, Norwich, NY, July 20, 1859

Death of Charles H. Wheeler.  The telegraph on Saturday conveyed intelligence of this sadly anticipated event to the many relatives and friends of the deceased in this vicinity.  His death occurred at the residence of his father in North Stonington, Conn., on Friday.  Mr. Wheeler had been for several years a member of the mercantile firm of Wheeler & Co., was one of the original Directors of the Bank of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], an active and intelligent business man, and a much respected member of society.  His health had for some time been failing under close and onerous business habits coupled with a predisposition to consumption, and about a year ago he retired from active duty with the hope of recovering it but this was not to be, and, although constantly followed by the watchful love and care of devoted friends, the progress of his disease was steady to the end.  He spent the last winter in Florida without material benefit from its mild and healthful climate, and returned in the beginning of summer to Stonington.  His last hours, though accompanied by acute physical suffering, were made endurable by the bright and cheering anticipations with which the Christian faith sustains its dying disciples.  He was reverential in his feelings and habits, a regular attendant on the services of the sanctuary, and when our village, a year or two since, experienced a memorable religious revival, it was thought by his Christian friends that his heart had undergone a change, though his diffidence and uncomunicativeness on his own religious experience withheld him from making an open profession of religion.  Those friends will now be happy to learn that two Sabbaths previous to his death, he united with the Congregational Church at Stonington and received the sacraments.  Thus rests from his labors one of our most beloved and loving young men, and at such a time his many friends will not fail to tender their warmest sympathies to his afflicted sister and other relatives in our midst.

Died:  In Oxford [Chenango Co., NY], on the 3d inst., of cancer in the stomach, Mr. Randolph King, in the 29th year of his age.  The subject of this notice, made a public profession of faith in Christ, at an early age, and soon after was Baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist at Smithville; of which he continued for a number of years, a consistent and worthy member.  And although he never possessed a strong constitution; yet he enjoyed comfortable health until within a little more than a year and a half since, when he was suddenly prostrated on a bed of sickness, and from that time to the time of his death he was a great sufferer.  And yet fearful as his sufferings were, he bore them with much patience and Christian resignation.  For the most part of the time his mind seemed unclouded, his faith in Jesus Christ as the Saviour of penitent sinners appeared unwavering' and his hope of heaven through the merits of Christ's death was as an anchor to his soul.  He spoke freely of his approaching dissolution, and did not think it hard that he must die young, but was happy in the hope that he should soon enter upon that rest that remaineth for the people of God, and would say to friends at his bed side, "weep not for me" and in the confidence that all was well he peacefully closed his eyes in death.  His funeral was attended by a large circle of friends at Smithville, on the 4th inst. Thus early has our brother passed away, in life respected, and in death lamented.  He leaves a widowed mother, and two sisters, who with a large circle of other relatives deeply mourn his early death.  Oh, why should death be linked with fear; / A single breath, a low drawn sigh; / Can break the ties that bind us here, / And waft the spirit to the sky. / Such was his end. A calm release, / No clingings to this mortal clod. / He closed his eyes, and stood in peace / Before a smiling God.

Died:  In this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 22d inst., Doct. Levi Farr, aged 72 years.  In recording the death of so prominent a man as Doct. Farr, some more extended notice seems due from his contemporaries than that he has left the scene of his usefulness.  Doct. Farr became a resident of this town in 1807.  He at once entered upon the active duties of his profession.  His services were required over a large section of country and amid its sparse and indigent population he became a prompt and ready medical adviser.  His untiring devotion to his patrons of every grade, and his zeal in his professional duties gave him a well merited reputation which was second to none in this section.  Nor was his professional counsels alone required.  On all occasion where public or private weal was involved, the counsel and advice of Doct. Farr were eagerly sought and cheerfully given.  In all the walks of usefulness that have been needed to convert a wilderness to the abode of wealth and civilization, whether in a physical, moral or a pecuniary point of view, Doct. Farr has filled a large space in the public mind and is gratefully remembered by his survivors.  For the last twenty years he has been entirely blind, yet amid the gloom of darkness that has surrounded his pathway his cheerful spirit and general intelligence has made him an attractive and an instructive companion.  In contemplating the character of Doct. Farr we see a man of no ordinary mould.  In all the characteristics of a mental and moral nature we observe that harmonious blending which beautifies and adorns humanity.  Nor did these in any degree forsake him in his declining age; but buoyed by that Hope which is an anchor to the soul, he has serenely passed from earth and left a bright halo in the remembrance of all who knew him. The bereavement of his widow is shared by our whole community and the kindest sympathies of all are largely extended to her.

Drowned:  John Bowdern, of this place [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], an intemperate Irishman, aged about 50 years, was found drowned in the basin to the side-cut, on Thursday afternoon last. When last seen alive, he was under the influence of liquor, and doubtless stumbled accidentally into the water.  Such was the substance of the verdict of the Coroner's jury.  Chenango Union.

Drowned while intoxicated:  John Bowdern, a well known dissipated shoemaker of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], was found drowned in the canal basin in this place on Thursday afternoon.  About fifteen minutes before he was found dead, he left a house on the bank of the canal about eight rods from the spot where he was picked up, in a condition so intoxicated as to be unable to walk well.  Coroner Day was called to hold an inquest, which he did on Friday, and after hearing the testimony of several witnesses, the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the above facts.

Died:  DIMMICK:  At her residence, on High street in Detroit, Michigan. on  Thursday the 19th? ult., Mrs. Electa Dimmick, wife of Joseph Dimmick.  It is very sad to record on this bright May morning the death of one so much loved and so worthy to be loved as was the lady above named.   To look without and within at the home ... and feel that she will no longer enjoy its loveliness and still more to ... at those she has left behind to whose well being and happiness she devoted herself who are now mourning the loss of her who was their joy and their rejoicing.  During the last three years she has suffered much from frequent and long protracted attacks of illness, but an all conquering energy of spirit and strong love of life sustained her through all so that even in this last fatal attack it was difficult for her friends, while life remained, to believe that she must leave them.  During these years of suffering it has been touching to [friends and family] to witness her efforts to make the sick room a cheerful one to her friends, to see the frequent jest and the endeavor to make light of her sickness.  Mrs. Dimmick was a true hearted wife in a devoted manner, an unwavering friend, a kind neighbor and her heart and hand were ever open to the poor and needy.  May her memory remain fresh and green in the hearts of those she loved.

Died:  FIELD:  In this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on the 12th inst., of apoplexy, Stephen M. Field, aged 58 years, 11 months and 10 days.

Killed by a Pair of Sheep Shears:  A man named Reuben Orr, who lived in the town of Otselic [Chenango Co., NY], met with death on Wednesday last under the following circumstances.  He was employed in shearing sheep for Mr. Thomas Havens, and was alone in a barn at some distance from the house.  He had a sheep upon a low table, and was working at the animal, when it kicked against the handle of the shears. driving one blade into Orr's leg above the knee, and completely severing the large artery.  He at once started for the house, the blood flowing from the wound in a great stream, and as soon as possible after he reached it Mr. Havens bound the limb tightly with a cord above the hurt.  This stopped the flow of blood, it had been running freely about fifteen minutes, and an express was sent off for Dr. Day and other physicians.  When the doctor arrived he found Orr failing very fast from the great loss of blood before the limb was bound, and, although every effort was made to revive him, he died in less than three hours after the accident.  Orr leaves a wife and seven children.  He was a poor man, and his family are without any certain provision for the future.
