Shocking Murder in Brookfield [Madison Co., NY]

Chenango American, Greene, NY, December 21, 1865

On Thursday last (Thanksgiving Day) a most atrocious murder was perpetrated in the town of Brookfield, Madison Co. [NY].  It appears that an aged couple, named Crandall, resided on the road leading south from Leonardsville to New Berlin (near a place known as Coontown) living entirely alone with the exception of a hired man, who was gone to Utica to spend Thanksgiving Day. At about five o'clock in the evening a couple of men entered Mr. Crandall's home, and boldly confronted the old gentleman, commanded him to inform them of the whereabouts of some money belonging to the man in his employ, and which they professed to know was secreted in the house.  Mr. Crandall indignantly refused.  Finding intimidation useless, they seized Mr. Crandall, and telling him they knew that he had a large amount of money secreted, threatened him with instant death if he refused to inform them where it could be found.  At this point, old Mrs. Crandall, who had been in an adjoining room, becoming alarmed rushed into the room and discovered the situation of her husband, raised cries of alarm and calls for assistance, at the same time attacking the villains with a broom stick.  At this demonstration, one of the rascals is supposed to have drawn a revolver and deliberately fired at the old lady, with almost immediate mortal effect. The wretches then beat Mr. Crandall with a club or chair about the head until he was rendered insensible and, leaving him for dead, proceeded to search the house for money to the amount of $3,000, which was understood to be secreted there. The wretches thoroughly searched the house to no purpose.  Mr. C. had quite a respectable sum of money in his pockets when attached by the villains, none of which was taken. The house was search with the closest scrutiny, drawers, boxes, trunks, chests, &c, being ransacked throughout the house. The money, which was in U.S. Bonds, and was secreted between the straw and feather ticks of one of the beds was unmolested.

Mrs. Crandall was buried on Sunday last, and her funeral was attended by a large and sympathetic gathering of relatives and friends.

The Utica Observer of Monday evening states that at the latest advices, Mr. Crandall was alive, with some probability of his ultimate recovery.  About an hour after the departure of the murderers, Mr. C. became conscious, and fully realizing the horrors of the whole affair and his necessity for medical aid, by an almost superhuman effort, procured his lantern and walked nearly a mile across the fields to the residence of his brother, where he narrated the particulars of the crime and procured assistance.

A Jury was empaneled, and a Coroner's inquest commenced on Saturday.  No additional facts were elicited, and no clue has been gained by which the perpetrators of the dreadful deed may be identified.

The Crandall Murder

Chenango American, Greene, NY, December 28, 1865

Two men, says the Chenango Union of yesterday, were arrested at Auburn last week who were suspected of being the parties guilty of the Crandall murder at Coontown.  On being taken to the latter place, Mr. Crandall failed to identify them, when they returned to Auburn to answer to a charge of theft, that being the accusation under which they were arrested.

Telegraph & Chronicle, Norwich, NY, August 28, 1867

We find the following paragraph in the Brookfield correspondence of the Oneida Union.

Henry D. Crandall has been summoned to Auburn Prison, to see a man supposed to be the murderer of Mrs. Crandall.  He recognized him at once as one of the men who assaulted him and murdered his wife.  He even shows the scars on his head where they hit him with his cudgel.  Crandall is positive there is no mistake in the identity.  He says he knows he is the man.  He will be taken from prison and tried for murder.

Thus, has suddenly, after a few weeks sickness, passed to her heavenly home, one who was endeared to a large circle of friends in this community, by her many noble qualities of character.  Faithful in all the relations of life, as a Christian disciple, as a daughter, sister and friend, she has left many saddened hearts to grieve over her early departure hence.  Full of life, energy, joyousness, self-sacrificing where duty called her, a strong prop in the household relationships, ready for any duties which claimed her attention, she fulfilled the requisition of the wise man of Proverbs, whatsoever thy hand badeth to do, do it with thy might.  Genial, frank, confiding in her disposition she readily won and retained the confidence of those whom she called friends.  The natural attributes of her character pervaded her religious life.  She had none of the affections of piety, yet with the deep earnestness of her nature she was most devoted to the Church of her affections.  And in the enjoyment of the solaces which that Church furnishes she passed through "the grave and gate of death" with a joyful hope through her Redeemer, of a Resurrection unto life. The respect and esteem felt for her were manifested by the attendance of a very large number of friends at the funeral services.  "If we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleeps in Jesus will God bring with him."

The above painful intelligence of the death of a beloved son has recently been communicated from China to a deeply afflicted, widowed mother.  To many in this community [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], the deceased was well known and was highly esteemed for his manly qualities of character. The vessel in which he sailed form Hong Kong to Swartow on the coast of China, is supposed to have foundered under one of those Typhoons which sweep to destruction all vessels that lie in their track.  Mr. Halsey had been engaged in his business as photographer, taking sketches of the scenery of that but partially known country and was pursuing this vocation, having his materials with him for extending the number of his pictures, at the time he was lost.

Distressing Accident

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, December 15, 1869

A dispatch to his friends in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], gives the sorrowful intelligence that Schuyler F. Wade, who left this place about three months since to take a position as conductor of a freight train on one of the Missouri railroads, has met with a fearful accident, necessitating the amputation of one of his limbs.  It is supposed that the accident happened on the railroad, although no particulars have yet been received.  Mr. Geo. W. Marvin, step-father to Mr. Wade, immediately started for the scene of the accident, and telegraphed back on Friday last that one of Schuyler's limbs had been amputated, but that he was doing as well as could be expected; a subsequent dispatch from him, however, is not so hopeful.  The precise date of the accident is not known here, but it is supposed to have occurred on Tuesday or Wednesday of last week.  The news of this dreadful accident was a sad blow to his family, who reside in this place, and to the whole community who are his friends.

Death of Schuyler F. Wade

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, December 22, 1869

We are pained to announce that Schuyler F. Wade, whose injuries upon a Missouri railroad we mentioned last week, died on Wednesday evening last.  His remains were brought to this place [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] on Monday, by Mr. Marvin.

Mr. Wade was Conductor on a freight train and being on top of one of the cars while descending a steep grade, was thrown from the car by the shock caused by the engineer having reversed the engine; he fell between the cars, his leg having been caught between the "bumpers," and crushed.  As soon as the cars parted, he swung himself clear from the train and was shortly after found, stunned by his terrible injuries and with his head partially lying in a pool of water.  It was found necessary to amputate his limb, which was done, and it was at first thought that he would recover; but he gradually sank and died, as we have stated, on Wednesday last.  His sad fate is universally lamented.  His age was 21 years.  A widow survives him.
