Drowning of Rev. Daniel Clark

The many friends of Rev. Daniel Clark, formerly pastor of the Congregational Church of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] (says the Telegraph of last week) will be sorry to learn that he was drowned in Illinois on the 24th ult; the particulars of which will be found in the following communication:

Onarga Ill., Sept. 30, 1869

Editors of Telegraph:  On Friday morning, Sept. 24th, Rev. Daniel Clark, pastor of the Congregational Chruch of Plainfield, Will Co., lll., was drowned while attempting to ford a bayou of the Desplaines river on horseback.  From the appearance of the body when found, it is supposed his horse suddenly plunged into one of the many deep holes in the bayou, throwing his rider, and in struggling to regain firm footing, probably struck the deceased on the head with his forefoot.  This supposition appears reasonable, as bruises were found upon his head, the blows causing which were sufficient to produce insensibility. When the body was recovered, some four hours after the sad occurrence, he was found lying upon his face, in about six feet of water, his riding whip in his hand. At the time of his death not a member of the family were at home, his wife being off on a visit to one of her sons.  The telegraph informed them of the event, but they reached home only in time to visit the corpse of the husband and father.

Mr. Clark will be remembered by most of your readers, as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Norwich, about sixteen years ago, over which charge he was settled four years.  From Norwich he removed to Fredonia, N.Y.; from Fredonia to Lyons, Ia.; from Lyons to Galena, Ill.; from Galena to Galesburg, and from Galesburg to Plainfield, where he met his sad death.

He will be remembered as a man of eminent piety, of fine intellectual abilities and of great social worth.  In his death the cause of Christ has lost a sincere, devoted and successful advocate; the State a law-abiding citizen; the friends of humanity an earnest champion; his family one of the most affectionate of husbands and fathers; and the community in which he lived and labored one of its brightest ornaments.  A chaplet of loving memories will crown his name and forehead wherever known - wreaths of undying fragrance, in the form of souls saved through his ministrations now and forever, will greet his entrance into Heaven and be worn by him through all eternity.

His funeral services were held on last Sabbath, and hundreds of friends followed his remains to the grave, where they "softly lie and sweetly sleep" until that day when, purified, his mortal body shall put on immortality, become incorruptible, and is again the tenement house of a soul so noble as to be measureless, so good as to be akin to Deity.

For this cold earth has easily chilled / This little budding flower, / And taken it above, to bloom / In that fairer, sunnier bower.

Oh! sadly, sadly do we miss, / Her sweet and sunny smile / Her pattering feet and pratling voice / Which all our thoughts beguile.

We loved our darling little child, / But in yonder's grave she lies; / She's gone to be an angel bright, / With Hattie in the skies.

And when life's toils with us are o'er, / And earthly ties are riven. / May we with darling Cora find, / A blissful home in Heaven.

LEACH:  In this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], Sept. 17th, of injuries received from a fall, Mr. Willard Leach, aged 52 years.

A sad accident occurred at the New Free Will Baptist Church on Birdsall Street [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], on Thursday afternoon last, which resulted in the death of a respected citizen.  Mr. Willard Leach, a mason by occupation, who had completed the job of plastering the church edifice, was engaged, alone, in taking down the scaffolding, and at five o'clock was seen about the building.  At six o'clock, or a little later, a son of Mr. Page, who resides in the neighborhood, entered the building, and found Mr. Leach sitting upon the floor, in an apparently unconscious condition, with his head terribly bruised and swollen.  He immediately gave the alarm, when help was promptly in attendance, and the wounded man carried to his residence. Several physicians were summoned, and it was found that he had received a heavy blow over the left eye, fracturing the skull. A portion of the bone was removed by Dr. Avery, with the hope that the pressure upon the brain would be relieved, but all efforts to restore the sufferer to consciousness proved unavailing and he rapidly sunk until death closed the scene, between two and three o'clock on Friday morning.

Upon an examination of the scene of the accident, it was found that a large portion of the scaffolding had been removed and immediately over the spot where Mr. Leach fell, one of the boards composing the scaffold - which was of inch stuff, and cross-grained - was broken, evidently by his weight.  He was undoubtedly precipitated head foremost to the floor, fourteen feet below.  A pool of blood was found at this spot, probably from his nose. When help arrived, he was found lying several feet from this point, having groped his way along, leaving the bloody marks of his fingers upon the supports to the scaffold, which he had doubtless grasped in his last, agonizing efforts to reach the door.

The deceased was an old resident of Norwich, and well known to the public, as an honest, upright man in his dealings, quiet and unassuming in his manner, a good citizen, an obliging neighbor, a kind husband and father, and a consistent Christian.  His melancholy death casts a gloom upon all who knew him, and his loss is mourned by a large circle of relatives.  He leaves a wife and one daughter.  His age was 52 years. We are glad to learn that the deceased had an insurance of $2,000 upon his life.

The funeral was attended on Sunday, by a very large concourse of people, including the Masonic fraternity, and a number of the National Guard, in uniform, he having been a member of both organizations.

Distressing Affair, A Little Girl Accidentally shot by her cousin

A sad and fatal result of the careless handling of firearms took place in the town of McDonough [Chenango Co., NY] on Wednesday, of last week.  A boy by the name of Mert Holdridge, about sixteen years old, son of Chauncy Holdridge, of McDonough village, was visiting at the residence of his uncle, Asa Wilcox, who resides near Ludlow Pond, and during the absence of Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox, requested the daughter of Mr. Wilcox, a little girl about eleven years old [Garfelia A. Wilcox], to get her father's pistol for him, which she refused to do, stating that her father had warned her not to touch it.  The boy, however, per sited in his request for the pistol, and she as persistently refused to get it.  Young Holdridge somehow found out where the pistol was kept, and soon possessed himself of it, and then pointed it at the girl, saying that he was going to shoot her for not getting it for him. The girl was frightened and ran, and the boy pursued her with the pistol pointed at her, when from some cause the pistol was discharged, the content entering the girl's neck, producing death in a short time. The occurrence is a horrible one and must have been a sad blow to the parents, who, upon their return, found their little daughter weltering in her blood.  We understand that the shooting is thought to have been purely accidental, but the reckless carelessness of the transaction deserves severe rebuke, if not a greater punishment.

Henry of whom none ever spoke except to praise, whose devotion to and affection for his mother were seldom equaled, but never excelled, and a faithful member of the church, is now, we trust, a bright jewel in the Savior's crown.  But oh! to the mother, what words more befitting:  "I love thee, I love thee, pass under the rod."

SMITH:  In this village, September 6th, Lilly May [Smith], only daughter of John L. and Mary V. Smith, aged 15 months.

Lilly May now is lying / In a silent, narrow bed; / Autumn winds are greatly sighing, / Round her beauteous little head.

But our little one was weary, / Hardly ever would she weep, / So, while lying in her cradle, / Lilly darling fell asleep.

O' our hearts were almost breaking, / When we saw her close her eyes, / Yet bethought we of a waking, / When our little one shall rise.

When our love shall early waken / 'Mong the first to sleep no more / Then shall we again behold her, / Where there's parting never more.

HARRISON:  In Smithville Flats [Chenango Co., NY], August 22d, Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison, widow of the late James Harrison, and mother of Mrs.  H.G. Crozier, of Smithville, aged 102 years.  The Greene American of last week announces the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison, aged 102 years, widow of the late James Harrison, and mother of Mrs. H.G. Crozier, of Smithville, which took place at Smithville Flats, on the 22d inst.  The American pays the following tribute to the memory of the deceased.

"Thus has this aged lady passed to her final home, with an unclouded intellect until within a few weeks of her death.  She has been able to survey a whole century of the world's progress.  Born in Monagham county, in the north of Ireland, before the birth of Napolean 1st, the Duke of Wellington, and Talleyrand, she has been cognizant of the great events on the earth's surface, since her early childhood.  She possessed in a very striking manner those exalted traits that belong to the devoted Christian, and to the last hours of her long life gave to all the manifestation of her cheerful devotion to her Christian profession.  Her devotion to the precepts of her savior, and her liberal contributions to the service of His cause, are worthy of the highest commendation of all who survive her."

Fatal Shooting Affair

Sheriff Mathewson went over to Cortland County [NY] last week for the purpose of arresting Charles Head, a former resident of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], who is under indictment for horse stealing.  Having procured the services of Deputy Sheriff Barnes, of Cortland County, the Sheriff proceeded to Blodgett's Mills [Cortland Co., NY], where Head was said to be at work.  Upon arriving at the Mills, Head was soon found, and Officer Barnes placed his hand upon his shoulder and informed him that he was a prisoner.  Head, by a powerful exertion, broke away from the officer and started off on a run, but was ordered by both the Sheriffs to stop, but he paid no attention to the order; whereupon Officer Barnes discharged his pistol at him, the ball taking effect in the lower part of the back, and passing through the abdomen lodged near the skin.  This took place on Thursday last and on Sunday, we are informed, Head died from the effects of the wound.

The Syracuse Journal has the following particulars of the affair:

"Yesterday afternoon, Sheriff Mathewson, of Chenango County, came to Cortland with a warrant for one Charles Head, charged with horse stealing.  Obtaining the services of Deputy Sheriff Barnes, of Cortland, the two officers proceeded to the house of a farmer near Cortland for whom Head was to work.  Knowing the desperate character of Head, the officers remained concealed until dinner was ready, when Head with other laborers, came to the house.  Mr. Barnes stepped out and placed his hand on the collar of Head and said to him, 'You are my prisoner.'  Head struck Barnes and thereby released his hold, and at once started off on a run.  Both officers called on him to stop, to which he paid no attention.  The officers then drew their revolvers, and both fired at the same moment.  Only one ball took effect, and that entered the body of Head at the lower point of the back, and passed quite through the stomach, coming out near the navel. The wound is considered fatal, as the physicians say the wounded man cannot possibly recover.  Head is a desperate character.  He is under indictments in Chenango and Otsego counties for various crimes and has hitherto eluded the officers."

CARRUTH:  Accidentally killed, in Bainbridge [Chenango Co., NY], July 24th.  Mr. Cortland Carruth, formerly of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], aged 47 years.

Mr. Cortland Carruth, an overseer upon the Midland Railroad, was instantly killed on Saturday afternoon last, near Bainbridge, where he had a number of men engaged in quarrying stone for the railroad bridge, now being built near Sidney.  It appears that the men were engaged in raising a very heavy stone.  Mr. Carruth superintending the work, when a guy rope supporting the derrick gave way, and the pole fell, striking Mr. C. upon the side of the head.  He was forced to the ground, the derrick falling upon and confining his head.  when it was removed, it was found that life was extinct.  Two other men were seriously injured, one of them fatally, it is thought.  Mr. Carruth was formerly a resident of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], and was at one time engaged in the mercantile business here, as one of the firm of Brown & Carruth, at the corner store now occupied by Peck & Arms.  He was a son of the late Levi Carruth, of this place, and was respected by the entire community, as an upright, honorable man.  He leaves a widow, residing at Oneida. The remains were brought to this place on Sunday, by his brother-in-law, William Card; and on Tuesday they were interred at East Pharsalia, his former residence.  His age was 47 years.

Miss Betsy Dye, who has for a long time been employed at the Hughson House in this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], died very suddenly on Tuesday night of last week.  She had been unusually cheerful during the evening, apparently in the best of health. Shortly after she had retired to her room for the night, an unusual noise was heard as of some person in distress, and, upon going to her room, she was found sitting at the window in a dying condition.  A physician was immediately sent for, but before he arrived, she was dead. We are informed that the cause of her death was heart disease, with which she had been afflicted for a long time.  She was about forty years of age.

DrownedCharles B. Musson, a young man about 22 years old, was drowned in the Butternut Creek, the 17th inst.  An inquest was held over his remains by Coroner Fox, of Morris. The verdict of the jury was that he came to his death from accidental drowning.  Young Musson's parents reside in Unadilla [Otsego Co., NY].  Home & Abroad

Though she viewed herself unworthy to enter heaven, yet her hope was in Christ. Though dead, she lives in the hearts of her husband, children, relatives and numerous friends, that have shared in her counsel and sympathy.

Mourn not for the dead!  She has gained that bright shore, / Where the sorrows of earth can afflict her no more; / She tunes her glad lyre, and triumphantly sings, / Hosanna and praises to Bethlehem's King.

But mourn for the mourner, who sighing remains, / Subjected to sorrow, to sin, and to pains / Whose spirit oft yearns for that cold, dreamless bed; / Oh! I mourn for the mourner, but not for the dead.

Golden WeddingMr. and Mrs. P. Davison celebrated their Golden Wedding at their home on State Street, Thursday evening last, July 8th, surrounded by their eight children and nine grandchildren; and three persons were present who witnessed the marriage, which was at the home of the bride, in Burlington, Otsego Co. [NY], fifty years ago.

Mr. Davison's birthplace was in Stillwater, Saratoga Co. [NY], where he has since conducted the watch, clock, and jewelry business.  Many are the silver spoons now held as precious family relics, bearing the stamp of "Davison," as manufacturer, for they were wrought by his "cunning handicraft."

How different the times now to what they were then!  There was not a single steel spring vehicle in the place, and he borrowed a one-horse lumber wagon of Mr. marsh to go over for his bride.  In those days courting was beset with difficulties unknown now, but we suppose the Inexpressible Something, vulgarized by even the cooing word of Love, was about the same fifty years ago, as now.

Few are permitted to look back through the vista of fifty years, on the event of a Golden Wedding.  On such an occasion there must be much of joy, much of regret, much of heart thanksgiving.  It must be a joy to have seen prattling children rise to manhood and womanhood; and through them rising yet another generation.  Hallowed are home memories.

Mr. Davison is 74 years of age; Mrs. D. 74, and there is a prospect of many years of life here below for them yet.  Home News

He was too beautiful to die, / Too fair to lay beneath the sod; /Thus did our hearts in anguish cry, / While smarting 'neath the chastening rod.

The house is very lone and still, / We miss the tiny pattering feet, / The voice of love that used to fill / Our hearts with rapture pure and sweet.

Yet now a fairer house on high / Claims the bright form we loved so well, / And tenderer love is his than ours, / For he has gone with God to dwell.

So, to that bright and heavenly home / With prayerful steps we onward move, / And when we cease on earth to roam, / We'll meet our angel boy above.   K.J.R.

Sad and Fatal Accident

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, June 30, 1869

About eight o'clock on Monday evening of this week, Thomas Ryan came to his death by drowning, in Mead's Pond, about two miles north of this village [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY].  It appears that three carpenters, who were at work on a building for Mr. Charles Hall in the vicinity of the pond, accompanied by Ryan and a son of Mr. Hall, went out in a boat to take a ride on the pond.  The boat leaked considerably, but no danger was apprehended until they got about in the center of the pond, when, either through carelessness or fright, the boat was capsized, and they were all precipitated into the water.  We are informed that they all got hold of the boat and could all have been rescued, had not Ryan left the boat with the declared intention of swimming to the shore.  He was urged by his companions to cling to the boat, but disregarding their advice, he struck out for the shore, and when about half-way between the boat and shore became exhausted and sank in the water, probably from the effects of cramp.  His body was recovered about twelve o'clock the same night.

Ryan was a respectable man, about forty years of age, and leaves a wife and two small children to mourn his loss.  He resided near the south end of the pond and owned a house and two or three acres of land.
