The death of this most estimable Christian lady removes from Cooperstown one who had greatly endeared herself to a large circle by her deeds of charity and kindness.  Her liberality to the poor and her willingness to aid in every worthy work, to minister to the sick and suffering, to answer every appeal in behalf of a good cause, were proverbial.  She was sincere and cheerful, devoted to her husband, her church and its interest and her large English heart beat in tender sympathy with all that might commend itself to the regard of a noble and genial soul. The death of such a woman is a loss to any community.

Death

PRICE:  In Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY], August 22, 1878, of consumption, Lillie E. Price, aged 24 years.

When twilight shades had passed, and evening fell, / White wing'd Azrael stood close to our door, / And softly knock'd and whisper'd, "all is well," / And thrice, the beads of Fate he number'd o'er.

The door, we lock'd and guarded, unaware / He passed and stood by our pale suf'rers side, / And with his fingers touch'd her soft blond hair, / And smiled, and whisper'd, "Come, the Angels bide."

The shadow of his wing came o'er the place, / And on our hearts, it cast a deeper gloom; / Two folded hands, a quiet upturned face / And white rob'd angels floated from the room.

Deaths

In Bovina [Delaware Co. NY], on Wednesday last, in the 69th year of his age, Mr. Robert Colgate, a native of Kent, England, but for the last 31 years an inhabitant of this country.

At Waterville [Oneida Co. NY], on the 24th July, Miss Ann Eliza Wainright, daughter of Mr. David C. Wainright, in the nineteenth year of her age. The death of this young lady is truly an afflicting dispensation of Providence.  Her kind and amiable disposition endeared her to her acquaintance by whom she will be universally lamented.  Her loss to the little society which she has left [--unreadable--] associates, the tears of affection will long continue to flow at the mention of her name, and the recollection of her virtues.  The circle of parental affection had become circumscribed by the hand of death till it centered on herself and a son, the only surviving children.  To them the parents looked as the solace of their declining years, and the inheritors of their name and estate.  The anguish of a fond mother at the sudden exit, in the morning of life of her youngest and only surviving daughter is alleviated only by the well-grounded hope that she has exchanged the present for a better world; that she now enjoys that "rest" which a few hours before her death she expressed to be the single object of her desires.

Death of Gen. Swift

Ontario Repository, July 19, 1814

We have received the orders of Major General Brown and Brigadier General P.B. Porter dated Queenston Heights, July 13, announcing that on Tuesday evening, July 12, Brig. General John Swift of Palmyra, in this county [Wayne Co. NY], was killed in a most perfidious manner by one of the enemy.  The General had volunteered to reconnoitrer the enemy's positions and works at Fort George and took with him 120 men.  In proceeding, he captured without firing a gun, and outpost, with a corporal and 5 men, one of whom after begging and receiving quarters, wounded the General by shooting him through the breast.  The alarm occasioned by the discharge of the gun, brought to the spot 50 or 60 of the enemy, whom Gen. Swift, tho' mortally wounded, instantly attacked with fierceness; but he soon fell exhausted.  His officers, however, animated by his example led on the troops, beat and drove the enemy into Fort George, which they approached to within half a mile, and then returned, bearing their expiring Gen. who died before morning.

The General's body was taken to the American side of the Niagara and on Wednesday last at 6 o'clock, interred with the honors due to his rank.

Gen. Swift served his country 7 years in the war of the revolution and "never was his country called on to lament the loss of a firmer patriot or a braver man."

Oxford Gazette, Oxford, NY, September 17, 1814

Deaths

Died on the debtors' limits in the village of Norwich [Chenango Co. NY], at 6 o'clock in the afternoon of the 7th inst, Henry William Ludlow, Esq. AEt. 38 years.

There is in the delicacy of honor, a kind of feather edge, which bristles from the soul like that on a new honed razer, unnoted by the eye, yet felt in the beard of the sentiment.  It is this feather edge of honor playing against the current of every vice with its wakeful vibrations like a pike's fin in the stream, which guards the moral flock from all impurities.  Mr. Ludlow possessed it, and with it a lofty and steadfast integrity united to the most clear and intuitive view of social duty and manly obligation.  Aut mors, aut vita decora [either death or a beautiful life] being his maxim, as it was the motto on the breech of his pistols.  Mr. Ludlow possessed not the thrifty talents of the ardent and enterprising money lover.  Neither did his early habits lie in the path of accumulation.  It is not therefore a matter of much surprise that when he was incarcerated for the sum of 280 dollars, his mental or practical expedients should fail him.  He lay 18 months confined for this debt and finally perished in despondency.  Every ligament and fiber which knit him to life, having been stressed and rasped, and chafed to a gossamer by pride, long abused, and hope sickening in pursuit of the fair picture of youthful promise and florid expectation,  snapped at last and left him in eternity, buoyant on his virtues.  His eyes were closed by strangers, strangers mourned him and he lies buried in a stranger's field.

Mr. Ludlow, the deceased, was the eldest son of that Mr. Thomas Ludlow of the city of New York, who can boast a fortune of 250,000 dollars, with two surviving children only to share it.  A man with an unbending heathenish stoicism, which leaves him unjaded by the officiousness of parental affection, domestic attachment or social obligation.  A man who having outstaid the defined period on earth stands careening to eternity, with his heels to the sill, striving for a noisome foot more to his "ropy chain of rheums," like a tared boor in a ropewalk, at the end of his tether.  A man whom Persious has described as one.

Guilford, Chenango Co. NY:  In the death of Mrs. Oleavia Ingersoll, wife of Eathan Ingersoll, which occurred on the 12th ult., in the sixty-seventh year of her age, our community has lost one of its most estimable citizens.  For several years the infirmities of increasing age have been gathering upon her, and about four years since she had the misfortune to fall and fracture her hip which added greatly to her burden.  Under all these afflictions, however, she bore up with cheerful resignation and continued to attend to her domestic cares until some eight weeks since when she was stricken with partial paralysis and which was followed about nine days since with an apoplectic shock with its fatal attendant result, as above stated.  For many years Mrs. Ingersoll, with her husband, has been a resident of our neighborhood, either upon their farm near here or in our village, meantime earning and retaining the universal respect of all who knew her for her combined qualities of intelligence and kindness of heart. She was a Christian in the true sense of the word, and her large circle of relatives and friends will sincerely mourn her death.  It has been a great consolation to her during the past few months that her only daughter, Mrs. S.W. Nott, who came from her distant home in Colorado, was with her to receive her counsel, and equally so now to the daughter to have been enabled to administer the last wants to a devoted mother.  A husband and an only son, after doing all in their power to sooth the pillow of the dying wife and mother, are left to mourn her great loss.

Mr. Woodruff' after which with every suitable mark of respect for his memory, his body was committed to the silent grave & thus, in the gay morn of life, a most promising and amiable young man is arrested by the cold hand of death, and has forever bid adieu to all the transitory scenes of this mortal life, never more to participate in its joys or sorrows!  He possessed a generous and a feeling heart, a sound mind, cultivated by a good education, which was accompanied by all the lesser virtues.  These rendered him truly amiable and dear to all his numerous friends and acquaintance, who, by this event, feel terribly and deeply afflicted at the loss which they and the community sustain by a death so premature.

Sad Accident - Drowned at Oriskany Falls

As we go to press, we learn that a sad accident occurred at Oriskany Falls [Oneida Co. NY] last Tuesday, which resulted in the sudden death of Earle Morgan a bright, intelligent boy [aged about 5 years], and the eldest son of Herman Morgan.  Deceased was generally loved for his many amiable qualities and his death will be mourned by all who knew him. Below will be found the particulars of his death.

On attempting to cross the Oriskany creek on a plank a short distance above the falls, he lost his balance, fell in the swollen stream and was carried over the falls, some thirty rods below, where the dam to Hicks' woolen factory crosses the stream.  He was rescued from the water within two or three minutes after falling in and every effort was made to bring him to life, but in vain.  It is supposed that his death resulted from injuries received by being swept over the rocks.

In Otego [Otsego Co. NY] on the 6th inst. Deacon Abraham Blakeley in the 92d year of his age.  Deacon B. was born in Conn., whence he removed to Vermont soon after the Revolution, in which war he served on a number of occasions, as his services were called for.  He came to Otego about the year 1800.  For over 20 years he was an active magistrate in the town and for many years conducting an extensive mechanical and farm business and performing the duties of a Christian parent and citizen in an exemplary manner.  He was for more than 70 years a member of the Baptist church, being one of the constituent members of the church in Otsego which to the extent of his ability, he served faithfully till his death.  He leaves an aged widow, two daughters, with a number of grandchildren to mourn his loss.  His funeral was attended on Sunday by a large assembly and the occasion improved by a discourse from his late Pastor, E. Westcott, Num. 23, 10.  "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my end be like his."

Also, on the 10th ult. Mrs. Sabra Shepherd wife of the late Benjamin Shepherd of Otego [Otsego Co. NY] and oldest daughter of the above mentioned Deacon B. after a long painful illness which she bore with Christian resignation, in the 62d year of her age.

A Wooden Wedding

The handsome cottage at the corner of Main St. and Ford Av., looked beautiful Wednesday evening.  It was illuminated to the exterior with great taste and compared pleasantly with the surrounding darkness of an inclement evening.  During the day, the interior had been festooned with shavings and the commonest old-fashioned clothespins, which presented an unique appearance and suggestive of the celebration of a Wooden Wedding.  Such was the event and Hon. James Stewart and wife were the center of pleasant scenes that must have remined them of that evening five years before when each pledged to the other their life and love.  There would be more to say of their married life if there had been more of it.  We considered it a "good match" then, as our grandmothers say, and that opinion has strengthened with time.  There are more of them now and the family is a third better off than even one year ago.  Such improvement until the golden wedding, and Mr. and Mrs. Stewart will have attained about all they justly deserve.

This anniversary was largely attended, many ladies and gentlemen from out of town being present.  There were several elegant costumes and to be brief the affair was exceedingly dressy and in good taste.  A great number of presents were made from little articles of the simplest kind to costly pieces of furniture.  Refreshments were served in abundance and of most delicious varieties.  We are sure that all present and many others join with us in congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Stewart and in the hope that they may live many years in the rich enjoyment of happiness and prosperity.

In Oneonta [Otsego Co. NY] Aug. 20, Mrs. Peter Gile. Funeral yesterday.  [Harriet A. Bishop Gile]

Rev. Wm. N. Cobb formerly a resident of this village [Oneonta, Otsego Co. NY] and Presiding Elder of Otsego District, died at his resident in Gibson [Steuben Co.
