Died:  In this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 24th inst. Charlotte [Monell], wife of Hon. Robert Monell, in the 69th year of her age.  The friend whose decease is above noticed has been long a resident in this place.  United in the marriage relation for a period of nearly fifty years, she leaves a lonely home to her surviving partner.  Her last sickness was long and painful. She could truly say with one of old, "I am made to possess months of vanity and wearisome nights are appointed to me," yet as a Christian, she found God's grace sufficient for her and His strength made perfect in weakness.  Seldom is it that the shaft aimed so surely by death is thus delayed. The dying pillow was soothed and softened by the ministrations of loving hearts, and it is a comforting thought that so many of the passive virtues of the Christian character were concentrated in the chamber of sickness and on the couch of anguish.  At the closing moment, the spirit passed away like a candle blown out by the wind.  "Night dews fall not more gently in the ground; Nor weary worn out winds expire so soft."  A large circle of friends will cherish the memory of her virtues and realize that though her departure has left a sad void among them, yet she is now at rest, in a land where pain and anguish can never wring the brow.  In a land "whose inhabitant can never say I am sick."

Death by Drowning:  As Mr. Frederick D. Eldridge, a resident of Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], was riding with his wife, on the bank of the canal near Mr. Maydole's Hammer Factory, in that village, Wednesday evening, of last week, the horse became frightened, and backed off into the canal.  In consequence of the waste weir being near, the current is swift at the point where they fell in, and the water unfrozen.  Mr. Eldridge called for held, which was immediately rendered, and he was taken out somewhat bruised, but his wife could not be found until after a search of nearly an hour, when her body was fished out near the place where they were precipitated into the water.  Efforts were made for her resuscitation, but without avail.

Chenango American, Greene, NY, January 12, 1850

A shocking and unnatural crime was committed in the southeast part of this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], about two miles from the village, on Friday, the 6th inst.  The particulars of this affair, as developed upon an investigation had before Justice Reynolds, of this village, on Tuesday last, are as follows:  Julia Ann Cady, a married woman, is the mother of a bastard child, born before her marriage with Cady. She is a woman of very unprepossessing appearance, and is a low, degraded being.  She has repeatedly threatened the life of the child, a girl about 4 years old.  About noon on Friday last, the mother and child were alone in the house; the mother took a pail and went to the neighbors, ostensibly to procure a pail of water.  While there her house was discovered to be on fire.  Upon the neighbors assembling, the fire was found to proceed from the bed, and was speedily extinguished. The child was found out doors, badly burned, especially about the arms and head.  The mother accounted for the fact, by saying that some of the neighbors must have put the child in the bed and set the bed on fire. This unreasonable statement, added to the fact that the child's burns did not correspond with having been burned in the bed, and that it had on a sack gown which covered a portion of the burns, and which gown was not burned at all, excited suspicion that the woman herself was the cause of the burning; whereupon her arrest was caused upon a charge of assault with intent to kill.  From the child's own statement and from the evidence adduced and circumstances developed, it appears that the fiendish woman stripped the child of its clothing, and put its head foremost into the stove, holding it there until she supposed it dead; then putting on it the sack gown, she placed it in the bed and set the bed on fire, and went to the neighbors.  The child however recovered itself so far as to escape from the bed and out of doors where it was found.  The child is seriously and perhaps fatally burned, its face being one complete blister.  Mrs. Cady has been committed to jail, to await the action of the Grand Jury.

Vital Records, Greene, NY - November 1859

Chenango American, Greene, NY, November 3, 1859

In Morris, Otsego Co. [NY], on the 12th ult. Capt. Dan Smith, in the 85th year of his age.  The departure from life of a good citizen who has lived to a great age in the respect and esteem of his fellow man, deserves something more than the customary brief obituary [announcement].  Captain Smith was born on the 30th day of May 1774, in Chepachet in the State of Rhode island.  He was cousin to the late Elisha Smith, Esq. of Norwich, and was descended through his mother in a direct line from Elder Charles Brown who was the first Baptist Clergyman of Rhode Island.  He removed in early life on to a lot of land which he had purchased in Plymouth, Chenango Co. [NY], still remembered as "Smith's Clearing."  Selling that, he located in Butternuts, Otsego Co [NY] near Gilbertsville, where he acquired and himself chopped and cleared up 200 acres of land.  In 1809 he established himself on a newly purchased farm one mile south of the village of Morris (then Louisville) where for half a century and until his death he continued to reside.  He there kept for many years a Public House, and it was at his house where the Militia Company were drafted for the war of 1812.  He was one of the seven old citizens of Morris who built the Factories at Morris and engaged in the manufacture of cotton goods, and no man had done more than he to found and sustain that beautiful village.

Captain Smith was married in 1800 to Miss Roxce Donaldson who died in 1857 at the age of 78.  they have had twelve children of whom nine still survive, viz:  Hon. Addison M. Smith, of Morris; J.C. Smith late Surrogate of Kings County; and Lucius Smith of Brooklyn; Rev. Henry R. Smith of Leesburg, Va; Mrs. Ferdinand Walker, of Detroit; Mrs. George J . Peck and Eliza B. Smith of Morris, Edwin Smith, of Sycamore, Ill; and Dan Smith, Jr., of Brooklyn; and all but the two last named were present at his funeral, which was attended on Sunday, the 16th ult. by a very large concourse of citizens.

The deceased discharged throughout his long life the whole duties of a good husband, father, neighbor and citizen; was industrious and prudent, liberal in his aid to the deserving poor and devotedly kind to his family.  Without making an ostentatious profession of religion, he lived in the practice of the Christian virtues.  In his politics he was of the school of Washington, loving the whole country and attached to the Constitution, and the Union as the only means of securing the blessings of liberty.  He had often spoken of death and expressed desire to retain his reason unimpaired to the last, remarking that he did not wish to live through another winter, nor to become infirm and helpless, that he had done with the v..tics of the world and stood ready to go when God called him.  His wishes in this were granted.  He retained his faculties, mental and physical, to his closing days and passed gently and peacefully from the world.  Blessed is the memory of the just.
