Molly Macauly has received a pension from the legislature of Pennsylvania for services rendered in the revolutionary war.  She was a very brave soldier, and when under General Wayne, was accustomed to swing her sabre over her head and huzza for "Mad Anthony" as she called the general.  She held the office of Sergeant and was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine, which led to the discovery of her sex.

Oxford Gazette, Oxford, NY, April 24, 1822

Death

Died in the village [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY] on Saturday last, Capt. Samuel Farnham aged 46 years.

The deceased had long suffered under the pains attendant on a lingering consumption, and for nearly a year past, had been confined to his room.  In health he became "reconciled to his God," and in sickness never shrunk from that dissolution which introduced his soul to a new and untried state of existence.  During the most distressing and painful periods of his illness, his mind was ever calm and placid, and he met death with philosophic fortitude and Christian resignation.

As a member of society, the loss of the deceased is already felt and will be deeply lamented.  Notwithstanding his indefatigable industry and attention to his own business, he was always ready to devote a portion of his time to the improvement and for the benefit of society.  He has left an afflicted wife on whom devolves the responsibility of advising, admonishing and educating her children, who with herself have sustained a loss that is irreparable.

Deaths

In this town [Binghamton, Broome Co. NY] at the residence of her father, Andrew Shaw, Esq. on Friday April 20th, Mrs. Elizabeth Hart wife of Charles G. Hart, Esq in the 24th year of her age.

This young and interesting woman cut down in the bloom of her being - "Ere decay's effacing fingers / Had swept the lines where beauty lingers." was the youngest of three sisters who, one after another, within as many years, have fallen victims to consumption.  She was attacked by the insidious disease about a year ago and with Christian resignation and composure, she awaited it certain issue.

Though prostrated for many weeks with the fatal malady, her mind brightened as her body decayed and with a singular consciousness, she announced to her watching husband, an hour previously, the exact moment of her earthly dissolution.

Without an enemy while living, now dead, she leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to cherish the memory of her social and Christian virtues and to follow her in the "fullness of time," to her mansion in Heaven.

_________________________

It is our unpleasant duty to state that our county has been recently the scene of an appalling tragedy.  On Friday last (April 27) a son of James Houghtaling of Yorkshire, in the town of Lisle, Broome County, [NY], a boy only eight years old, cut off his father's head with an Axe!  The circumstances, as we have learned them, are as follows:  The father had been ploughing his field, and in a state of intoxication, left his team and lay down in a furrow.  The little boy took the -?- to the barn and while the father was thus lying, probably insensible, under the effects of liquor, literally severed his head from his body.  We learn that an elder brother witnessed the fatal act.  The boy, with blood on his person, immediately informed others of the deed and boasted that he had done it because the father had choked him the night before.  We learn that the deceased, though addicted to intemperance, had accumulated considerable property which is thus suddenly left to his family.  Some contradictory and suspicious rumors are afloat which we now forbear to mention.  The facts as related are almost incredible and we await with much interest the development of the truth of the Coroner's jury which was to have assembled the next day (Saturday).  The youthful and precocious destroyer of human life is probably too young to suffer the punishment awarded by the laws of the land to the murderer.  He will, we presume, be sent to some corrective institution where his early, but dangerous, propensities will have a salutary treatment.  The mother and son will be brought to our village today.

On Sunday morning last, near West Laurens [Otsego Co. NY] Benjamin Burrows was found dead.  He had by his side a bottle of the "orful critter," that causes so much misery and trouble to those who love Rum.  He was found by a boy who was out looking at his mink traps.  Quite a number of our readers know Ben.  His death should be a warning to all who use intoxicating liquor as a beverage.

Young man, do you suppose that when Ben commenced tasting of Rum, that he tho't he would ever become a drunkard and die the death of the drunkard?  No, he like you only now and then partook of the social cup.  But what was his end?  He died on the cold ground and for his companion in the hour of death he had the very thing that had dragged him down from the paths of virtue and usefulness.  Oh! young man stop and consider.  You too may die as has Ben.  You are fast treading the same paths which he trod.  Will you not at once stop tippling for the sake of your aged parents, who are doting on you in their old age, your sisters who love you, and above all for your souls sake, banish the maddening cup from your lips forever.  Rum, thou adversary of men's souls how long will thou be permitted thus to degrade our fellow beings and bring them down to the level with brutes. God grant that through his spirit he may work in the hearts of men, and they may arise in their might and put down the selling liquor business.

A man by the name of John Lee fell from Lyon Brook Bridge [Chenango Co. NY], a distance of 160 feet on the 12th and was instantly killed.  He had been drinking and had just enough liquor in him to make him dare to do anything and while going through some pranks on the bridge, fell and was picked up a dead man.  He lived in Eaton [Madison Co. NY].

On Wednesday, 12th inst., two boys of Mr. S.H. Chapin of this town [Fly Creek, Otsego Col NY] and one of Mr. Peter Edgett, were playing together, having been left at home alone.  Charles Chapin the elder boy, went into the barn and got a shot gun that was left loaded.  The Edgett boy aged 8 years took the gun and said he took off the cap and threw it away and then snapped it, when it exploded, the whole charge taking effect in the neck of Harvey Chapin on the left side, just below and grazing the angle of the lower jaw bone, severing the carotid artery on that side and partly the trachea, causing almost instant death.  A Coroner's inquest held by me, rendered a verdict of "accidental death by a gun in the hands of James F Edgett."

This is another instance of the carelessness of leaving a gun loaded in the house where there are small children in a position where they can get at it.  It was without doubt an accident, as the boys had been playing pleasantly all the time they had been together.  It is to be hoped that all will take a lesson form this sad occurrence.  The careless use of firearms is a too frequent cause of serious results and sometimes not altogether as accidental as was this.  J.K.L.  Fly Creek, Oct. 16.

Marriage

On Wednesday evening of this week, at the home of the bride in this village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co. NY], Mr. John L. Clark was united in marriage to Miss Emma M. Marshall, only daughter of Hiram Marshall.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. D.N. Grummon.  The bride was very nicely dressed and we noticed at the reception one or two very elegant presents.  This couple, it seems, have wooed since babyhood and Cupid, who no doubt had an idea of his own, has at last consummated a union, which we trust will never be disturbed in its present harmonies - a union which the friends of both will unite in expressions of congratulation and wishes for their beatific prosperity through all their walk in life.  Among the invited guests were C.M. Priest, L.B. Clark, I.M. Curtis, S.S. Ehrich, Willard Hastings and yours truly.

Deaths

Died in Guilford [Chenango Co. NY] Jan. 15, Amanda [Bradbury] wife of Andrew Bradbury, aged 75 years. In the death of this lady, we are again reminded how rapidly the old and respected citizens of the town are passing away.  Mrs. Bradbury has been a resident of Guilford for over 40 years, for nearly four years has been an invalid and at times her sufferings have been intense.  Her active life was always filled with works and deeds of charity and the poor especially will remember her as their friend.  She leaves a husband and several children, all living in town, except Dr. Matthew Bradbury, of Mexico [Oswego Co. NY], who was here to attend her funeral.

We were shown by J.M. Lull, Esq. on Friday last an old iron kettle, which had come into his possession the day before, which was once the property of his father.  This kettle has quite a history.  In 1776 the father of Mr. Lull lived some three miles north of this village [Morris, Otsego Co. NY].  The Indians becoming troublesome, he was obliged to leave this part of the country for some more thickly inhabited place.  Just before starting he took the above kettle together with several others and buried them in a corn field.  After being absent some five years, he returned; made search for the kettles, but bushes had grown over the field and although he made an instrument and perforated the field over, he could not find his kettles, and he supposed the Indians had dug them up and appropriated them to their own use.  But about fifty years afterwards the kettles were plowed up by Ezra Lull.  The one we saw was brought to the village to be sold for old iron, Mr. Lull getting an eye on the old kettle, thought best to save it for a relic and a reminder of those days that tried men's souls.

BILLINGS:  In Smyrna, N.Y. Jan. 9th, 1879, John F. Billings, having nearly completed his 78th year.

The son of one of the original settlers of Smyrna, John Billings, who came from Somers, Connecticut in 1797.  He was born in Smyrna, February 15th, 1801.  Settling on the farm near the place of his birth, he was married January 19th, 1825, to Miss Lucretia Crawe of Hamilton, N.Y.

Fifty-two years they traveled the journey of life together, when a sudden accident opened for Mrs. Billings the door into eternity.  During the last year of his life, Mr. Billings was a great sufferer and more or less helpless.  Though his disease was of an irritating nature, his last days were marked by unusual patience and resignation.  Of his children, two daughters died in early womanhood, three sons live in their native town, one on the homestead, the other lives in Smyrna village.  Thus, the sons of the original settlers are going away.

On that street settled in an early day [by] Captain Felt.  His son, Asa Felt lived on the same farm, removing to Earlville previous to his death.  A neighbor was John Parsons.  His son Alfred Parsons succeed to the farm and has now removed to the village of Earlville.  Alpheus Hall settled on that street as did Noah Wood.  Solomon Hall succeeded to the homestead of his father Alpheus and died some years since.  Julius Wood lived and died where his father Noah settled.  There are many farms in Smyrna now in the hands of the third generation from those who cleared the primeval forest.  A few of the second generation survive, as Messrs. Harlow Billings, son of Joseph Billings; L.B. Collins, son of Joseph Collins; Thos. L. Wilcox, son of Lillibridge Wilcox; Henry Wilcox, son of Russell Wilcox; John Wilcox, son of John Wilcox, and perhaps a few others. Our fathers, where are they? Do they live forever?

Owing to the crowded state of our columns in Wednesday's issue, we omitted to speak of the funeral of the late Nelson O. Wood, which occurred on Sunday last, from his late residence in North Norwich [Chenango Co. NY].  The services were largely attended by his many friends and acquaintances from various portions of the County.  A special train left this village at one o'clock bearing with it about one hundred and fifty Masons, Knights Templar, and Odd Fellows, each in the regalia of these several organizations to take part in the funeral rites.  Teh services at the house were very impressively conducted by Rev. S. Scoville, at the close which, the last remains of the friend of all were looked upon for the last time, and the body was delivered to Norwich Masonic Lodge for burial in accordance with the request of the deceased.  The long procession of the regaled Brothers and plumed Knights bearing their dead to the tomb was an impressive and noble sight.  Arriving at the Plasterville cemetery, a large concourse of people assembled and reverently witnessed the burial.

Worshipful Master, David H. Knapp conducted the funeral ceremonies in accordance with the ritual of the Order, in a clear ringing voice, so that all the vast throng could unite in its spirit with becoming respect.  All the orders joined in depositing the evergreen and when the ceremony was concluded, Past Master, H.D. Mallory, acting as Chaplain, offered a most beautiful and touching prayer, partly ritualistic and adapted to the circumstances of the case.

The ceremonies concluded, the usual tribute was paid to the friends,2 and the Brothers from Norwich returned to their train and homes.

Minnesota was admitted into the Union as a State on Tuesday by the passage by the House of the Senate bill by a vote of 157 to 38.  Thus, another star is added to the galaxy, the thirty-second State has been born and makes the seventeenth free State in the Union.  Minnesota has been admitted quietly, and in order.  No troubles like Kansas, her people are order loving and law abiding.  Before the close of the present session, Oregon will probably be admitted, as the bill for her admission passed the Senate on the 15th inst., by a vote of 35 to 17.  Thus, the Republic is gradually increasing in power and greatness and consequently in influence.  Our country already stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and will soon embrace the whole continent, whose millions of people will under the star-spangled banner find happiness and prosperity, knowing but one law, one county, one destiny.

Robert Gallup a soldier of the Revolution, died in this village [Greene, Chenango Co. NY] on the 20th ult. of extreme old age.  He was in his 98th year, and up to the hour of his death possessed all his faculties in a remarkable degree.  His services in behalf of our country, and the degree of respect entertained for his character, are fully portrayed in the proceedings of the citizens of our village had in reference to his decease.

Mr. Gallup took up his residence in Plymouth in this county [Chenango Co. NY] in 1807, where he resided for some years.  After a short residence in Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] he came to this village [Greene] where he has continued to dwell until his death.

In pursuance of a resolution of our citizens at a public meeting held on Friday evening last, minute guns were fired, the flag displayed at half mast, and the bells tolled upon the occasion of his corpse leaving this village, on its way to Plymouth for interment.  The body was escorted by a large procession, accompanied with music to the bounds of the corporation.

Sittable honors were paid to the deceased as his remains passed through Oxford and Norwich.  At Norwich the fine Artillery corps of Capt. Tyrrell escorted the body through the town, amidst the booming of cannon.

On Sunday Capt. Tyrrell's Artillery went to Plymouth and assisted in burying the old Hero with appropriate military honors.

Thus, has passed away the last of that gallant band of Patriots who was a resident of this county.  But few remain - scarcely a hundred - of those gallant souls who serve to remind the present generation of the trying times of the past, and as one by one they drop from our sight we feel a mournful satisfaction in knowing that they have witnessed the joyful fruit of their labors and that their last hours are soothed by the grateful efforts of a free and happy people anxious to pay tribute to their valued services.  Lie quiet in your graves, ye heroic men.  Millions yet unborn shall do homage to your worth and speak your names with holy reverence. In Speedsville [Tompkins  Co. NY] on the 7th instant of croup, Rhoda [Blair] daughter of William U. and Matilda Blair, aged 3 years 1 months and 18 days.

The sorrow for the dead is the only sorrow from which we refuse to be divorced.  Every other wound we seek to heal; every other affliction to forget, but this wound we consider it a duty to keep open.  This affliction we cherish and brood over in solitude.  Where is the mother who would willingly forget the infant that perished like a blossom from her arms though every recollection is a pang?  Who would root out such a sorrow from the heart?  Though they sometimes throw a passing cloud over the bright hour of gaiety or spend a deeper sadness over the hour of gloom; yet who would exchange it even for the song of pleasure on the burst of revelry.  No. There is a voice from the tomb sweeter than song.  There is remembrance of the dead to which we turn even from the charms of the living.

To Rhoda

The little crib is empty, / There oft we've seen thee lie, / So beautiful in thy deep sleep, / Emblem of purity. / And O how silent is the place, / Where of late we've heard thy voice, / In gleeful shout or merry laugh / Making our hearts rejoice.

Thy playthings lie around us, / The silent rattle here, / Gay toys and picture books are there / Ah, sure thou must be near, / Thy tiny pair of half worn shoes, / Thy lifelike dress of red / Thy chair and plate are vacant now / Sweet Rhoa art thou dead?

Our trembling hands enclose / Thy bright and clustering curls; / Millions of gold can't buy them, / Nor India's gens or pearls; / All that's left to mortal sight / Of thee, sweet Rhoda now; / Oh holy Father teach our souls / submissively to bow.

Father, forgive our anguish / Thy ways are ever just / Speak comfort to our broken hearts / For thee shall our trust be won / With thee her spirit liveth / So cherished and so dear. / Sent to us for a little while / Our earthly home to cheer.
