Columbus, Chenango Co. NY

The angel of death has again passed by, and three more have fallen by his hand.  Mahala Griffin died last Friday night at the residence of Oliver Myers.  She was ninety-three years of age. The funeral occurred yesterday (Sunday).

Today occurs the funeral of Miss Ella Myers who also died Friday night, aged nineteen years.  For more than a year she had suffered with throat and lung difficulties, which finally terminated in consumption.  In the morning of life, while yet the flush of health was on her brow she became a Christian, and united with the M.E. Church.  "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

Tomorrow the funeral services of the wife of George F. Blackman will be held.  She died at her residence on Saturday morning last, aged 73 years.  A good woman - a mother in Israel - has gone to her reward.  For the greater part of her long life, her everyday walk was a beautiful illustration of the principles of our blessed religion, and when the Reaper came, he found her like a shock of corn fully ripe for the harvest.

Coventry, Chenango Co. NY

Truly this is an afflicted family and they have the sympathy of the entire community - Chenango American

Again, has death entered this bereaved family, culled another flower and borne it from the "chilling blasts of earth" to bloom in paradise.  He never choose a more lovely one and never could his selection be more keenly realized.  But we should not mourn his loss, for death to him was only a kind unknown friend who unlocked with noiseless hand life's flower encircled door to show him those he loved.  With them he is now, as he often used to sing, "Playing on the Golden Harp."

That once happy home is now desolate and lonely - for five lovely children and an affectionate wife have been carried away by the pale horse and his rider.  but it is a consolation to feel that they all have been put on board the life boat - the Atonement of Jesus, and have safely reached the harbor of eternal repose, where:

"Sickness and sorrow, pain and death, / Are felt and fear'd no more.  / Death spreads his withering, wintry arms, / and beauty smiles no more; / Ah: where are now those rising charms / Which pleased our eyes before? / Hope looks beyond the bounds of time, / When what we now deplore / Shall rise in full immortal prime / And bloom to fade no more."

Mr. Francis was born in Greenville, Green Co on May 10th, 1797.  He came in early life to Augusta [Oneida Co. NY] where he spent more than fifty years.  Here he was married to Miss Mercy McMillin, professed the religion of Christ and lived an everyday useful and pious life, beloved and respected.  Nine years ago, he made Munnsville his home, when he at once took his place in the church and society and though his course was not marked with eccentricities and noisy efforts, yet it was steady, reliable, and respected.  His last hours witnessed no joyous ecstasies, but there was peace and conscious safety and the light of a useful and pious life.  Bloomed the darkness of the valley that lay between him and the world of light.

___________________________

It is with the deepest sorrow we find ourselves called upon to record the death of one of our most prominent and respectable citizens, Gen. John M. Messinger who died at his residence in this village on the afternoon of Tuesday last.  Although for some few days preceding his decease his friends felt somewhat alarmed as to the ultimate termination of his sickness, yet not until within a day or two of his death, was the event looked for as so near.  Gen. Messinger was widely known, having for a long period taken an active part in the political, as well as other matters of Madison County [NY].  Originally from Massachusetts, in 1803, we believe, he came to the town of Smithfield [Chenango Co. NY] where he lived for a number of years, afterwards removing to Lenox [Madison Co. NY].

As already remarked, he sustained a prominent position, owing not only to natural ability and practical judgment, but also sharing in a large degree that force of character and indomitable will that always gave him marked influence in society.  Holding several important offices of trust, among which were those of Sheriff and representative to the Legislature, he proved himself honorable in discharging all the duties pertaining thereto.  In political views he was attached to the Democratic party and measures, until 1860, when he felt constrained to sever his connection with that party, since which period he has acted with and given to the Republican party his earnest support. As a citizen, always interested in the growth and welfare of our village, as a neighbor, kind and obliging, as a man upright and respected, his loss will be deeply felt.  His last hours were made peaceful and happy by leaning for support upon the arm of his Redeemer, and his eyes closed in death with hardly a struggle.  The funeral services were attended on Thursday afternoon from his late residence by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.

News Item

Georgetown [Madison Co. NY]:  The shooting of the Cady girl, which was reported last week, occurred near the house of Mr. Lorenzo Van Horn.  Messrs. Van Horn and Cady live about 35 rods apart.  Mr. and Mrs. Van Horn were absent from home.  The girl, Arminda [Cady] had gone over to wash some clothes in a brook about a rod from Mr. Van Horn's residence.  A coroner's jury was empaneled on Sunday evening, Sept. 2d, by Coroner Harris, of Cazenovia. The verdict of the jury was unanimous that the shooting was accidental.  On Thursday, a warrant was issued by A.V. Bentley, Esq. of DeRuyter on complaint of one of the neighbors for the arrest of the boy Frank Van Horn, who fired the gun.  He was arrested on Friday and on Saturday was brought before Esq Bentley of Deruyter, L.B. Kern, Esq. appeared for the people and D.Q. Mitchell, Esq. for the prisoner. The counsel for the defense waived an examination and the boy was committed to jail to await the action of the grand jury. The boy is about 10 years old and rather small of his age.  Cazenovia Rep.

The esteem and affection for the happy couple was attested by a large and costly selection of presents, among which was silver spoons, forks and butter dish, presented by the choir of the M.E. Church.  It was a most enjoyable evening.  The house was beautifully decorated with the choicest flowers, a bountiful supply of provisions were served, while the strains of music and song completed the circle of pleasure.  Hearty congratulations were extended the bride and groom all of which we hope will be realized.

Death

In Westport, Conn., on Tuesday the 5th inst., Franklin Taylor, aged 23.

The deceased was a graduate of Yale College, in the class of '43.  His student life was distinguished by great industry and brilliant promise.  A scholar - a friend - a Christian, he combined all the traits of mind and heart that win the favor of the teacher and attract the society of his fellows.  In a conversation with the writer, he expressed a determination to prepare himself for God's ministry in heathen lands.  But his labor of love has been forbidden him.  He has been preferred to a more blissful service, praising God in heaven.  The pride of '43 is gone.  Let us find comfort in the reflection, that "whom the gods love die young."

Death

At the residence of Maj. Gen Gaines, New Orleans, on the 8th inst. William Wallace Whitney son of Virgil Whitney, Esq. of this village [Binghamton, Broome co. NY] aged 21 years.

The deceased was personally known to a majority of the readers of this paper, and all have enjoyed the perusal of many of the productions of his pen which have appeared in its columns during the last three years, over the signature of "Fritz."  Consequently, neither the virtues which adorned his life, nor the cultivated intellect, which gave him a station among men by many years his seniors in age and intercourse with the world, need an extended notice at our hands.  But the writer of this cannot deny himself the privilege of lingering for a moment over the departure of one, so young, so good, and whose future life was so full of promise, to a large circle of relatives and friends.

In William W. Whitney, talents of the first order were united with industry, energy, great force of character and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.  During the last three years he had been attached to the family of Maj. Gen. Gaines, in the capacity of military Secretary. The relations subsisting between Gen. Gaines and his young friend were of the most intimate and friendly character.  They in fact, regarded each other as father and son and the General frequently expressed his high opinion of his moral and intellectual qualities.  On one occasion when communicating with a mutual friend, he used the following language:

"Of the thousands of talented young men with whom it has been my good fortune to be associated in the public service during a period of forty-five years, many of whom have been on duty near me, and personally and intimately known to me as he has been for years, I am convinced that I have never known a more exemplary, upright man, nor any of his age equal to him in legal and military mind and moral courage."

He had also pursued the study of Law and last winter was admitted to the honors of an Attorney at the bar of the highest court in our nation.  Notwithstanding the arduousness of his consequent duties, he found time for much miscellaneous and literary writing, which has appeared in the columns of several of the first journals in New York, Washington, New Orleans, St. Louis, and other of our Western and Southern cities. An all-wise providence has removed him in the morning of life, and at the commencement of a career of great prospective honor and usefulness.  Let us bow in humble submission to its afflicting dispensation.  He was prepared to meet his God and expressed an entire willingness to exchange this for a brighter and happier world.  May we, who are left emulate his example and practice his virtues.   C.J.O.

Mrs. Belle S. Botham received a dispatch Monday apprising her of the death of her husband by drowning near Buffalo [Erie Co. NY].  She started on the first train for the city.  Another dispatch on Tuesday announced the recovery of the body.  Mrs. Botham spent a few days in Schenevus [Otsego Co. NY] recently and had made arrangements for his wife to travel with him this summer.

The Buffalo Commercial, Buffalo, NY, April 28, 1879:  The Rochester Democrat of this morning has the following:  H.H. Warner, the well-known dealer in safes, received a telegram Saturday afternoon informing him that one of his agents, A.F. Botham had been drowned at Nunda.  Subsequently he learned that Botham and Walter S. Orcutt had been fishing at the lower Portage Falls, and that in some manner the boat got into the rapids and was capsized, Orcutt alone escaping.  The unfortunate young man was only twenty-three years of age and has a wife, although she does not reside in this city [Rochester, Monroe Co. NY].  He had been in Mr. Warner's employ since last jnauary and he left Rochester for Nunda about a week ago. A telegram announcing the sad news has been sent to Mr. Botham's father who is a well-known lawyer is Southbridge, Mass.

Buffalo Weekly Courier, Buffalo, NY, April 30, 1879:  Mr. A.F. Botham of Rochester [Monroe Co. NY] was drowned in the Genesee River below the Portage Falls Saturday afternoon.  Mr. Botham was a commercial traveler, representing Mr. H.H. Warren, dealer in safes at Rochester, and at the time of the accident had gone from Nunda, Livingston County [NY] in company with a gentleman named Wallace of that place, to the Genesee River for the purpose of fishing. The two gentlemen began their amusement and fished up the river until they had almost reached the lower falls, which are about three miles below the railroad bridge at Portage.  At the point where the accident occurred the water ran very swiftly and was very high. the two men entered a boat and attempted to cross the river. When nearly halfway across, the boat was overturned in the rapids and both men thrown into the water. Wallace was washed down stream for some distance and was able to get upon a huge rock which projected from the water.  Botham was also washed down in the flood and has not since been seen.  Yesterday nearly a hundred men worked all day dragging for the body, but their efforts were not successful. The water was very high and very muddy, making the work slow and very difficult.

Buffalo Weekly Courier, Buffalo, NY, May 7, 1879:  the deceased entered Mr. Warner's employ in January last, previous to which time he had been working for the Wilcox & Gibbs sewing machine company.  He was only twenty-three years of age and was a married man.  His wife formerly worked in Sibley, Lindsay & Carr's but left there some time ago and went to visit some friends in Schenevus, Otsego County, N.Y.  In the overcoat thrown off by the drowned man was a letter addressed to his wife and fifty dollars in money.  His father is a lawyer living in Southbridge, Mass. and immediately on receipt of the unwelcome news a telegram was sent to him.  Yesterday an answer was received from Southbridge stating that his wife's friends would give him sepulcher, a somewhat extra-ordinary message for a parent to send.  Up to the present writing no news has been received from the wife. Telegrams were sent to Schenevus and to friends in Albany, but without receiving any answer.  It was subsequently ascertained that his wife was visiting friends in Syracuse and telegrams were dispatched to the Syracuse papers requesting the publication of the accident in order to catch the wife's eye.  So far, all efforts to find the body have proved unavailing and it is possible that some days will elapse before it is recovered.

Rejoicing in the Valley of the Chenango

The following extracts from a letter dated Oxford, Chenango Co. [NY] 25th inst. show the spirit which pervades the valley, since the passage of the bill authorizing the construction of the Chenango Canal.  Argus

"I will endeavor to give you some little description of the expressions of joy in the valley of the Chenango on the arrival of the news of the final passage of the canal bill.  The stage started from Utica on Saturday morning with an elegant flag, bearing an eagle with spreading wings on a white ground with a crimson border, and above the eagle was emblazoned in large crimson letters, "Chenango Canal."  This was carried thru to Binghamton in good style.

"When we struck the Valley, we met an escort from Norwich, headed by more than one hundred horsemen, elegantly mounted, and bearing two standards of colors.   Next followed a sleigh, drawn by four fine horses, fitted out in Rider's best style.  In this sleigh we took our seats.  This was again followed by almost a countless number of our citizens in sleighs.  the whole cavalcade moved on under the orders of our friend, esq. Smith, until we reached the elevation north of the village of Norwich, when the roaring of cannon, the ringing of bells, and the shouts of the citizens commenced and in twenty minutes, the village was brilliantly illuminated.

"In Norwich we met a boat from Oxford, mounted on two sleighs, with a flying flag and drawn by four horses, in which (after shaking hands with our friends at Norwich) we took passage for Oxford, where we witnessed the same demonstrations of joy as at Norwich.

"When we ascended the hill at Morse's with the sound of the bugle, the four bells in Oxford commenced ringing, the cannon roared and the whole valley seemed to ring with the buzzes of its citizens.

"P.S. it be said that Hamilton village has exceeded all the rest."

Death

Died on the morning of the 15th instant, At Richfield [Otsego Co. NY] on his return from the last Herkimer Circuit Court, Isaac Seelye, Esq. of this village [Cherry Valley, Otsego Co. NY] in the fifty-fifth year of his age.  He was attacked suddenly by a paralytic stroke and expired in about forty-eight hours.  He was the Senior Member of the Bar of this County.  Although Mr. Seelye possessed talents and requirements which eminently qualified him to fill any public station, yet so far from soliciting, he always declined public employments.  His untiring zeal for the interest of his clients, his extensive practice, his distinguished talents in his profession, and his virtues and excellent qualities as a member of society, render this Dispensation of Divine Providence an event which will be long and deeply deplored by this community - while in his afflicted and excellent family the loss of a kind and tender husband, and a most affectionate parent, is truly irreparable, and can only be alleviated by a resignation to the will of Heaven and the consolations of Religion

From the New Berlin Herald of the 20th inst.

Execution:  Yesterday the unhappy and ill-fated George Dennison expiated his awful crime on the gallows and terminated by an ignominious death, at the early age of twenty-six years, a career of vice, intemperance and depravity.

At an early hour the streets were thronged with an immense concourse of people who had assembled from all quarters to witness the execution.  At half past 11 o'clock, the prisoner, clad in the mournful habiliments of the grave, was taken from the gaol; took his seat on his coffin, in a sleigh, attended by sheriff Franklin, his deputies and ex-sheriff Welch, and a number of the clergy, and proceeded under a strong escort of military to the place of execution.

He ascended the gallows with a firm and elastic step and seated himself on the fatal drop.  A very impressive prayer was then offered up to the Throne of Grace by the Rev. Mr. Sprague, of Sherburne, after which the prisoner in a full and clear tone read an address to the assembled multitude, in which he traced his awful fate to the influence of ardent sprits and solemnly implored all who hear him to abandon forever that deadly and destructive habit; stated that he had once been a member of the temperance society, but soon abandoned it, and persisted in intemperance till it has brought him to his present deplorable condition and concluded by declaring his innocence of willful and deliberate murder, forgiving all his enemies as he hoped to be forgiven.

After he had concluded, Elder Swan addressed the people in an able and eloquent manner, and was succeeded by the Rev. Mr. Bogue of Norwich, and Birdsell of Coventry.  the Sheriff then adjusted the rope, the cap was drawn over the prisoner's eyes and after a fervent prayer by Rev. Mr. Bogue, the fatal drop fell, and Denison was launched into eternity!  During the whole ceremony at the gallows, the wretched man remained firm and apparently unmoved, exhibiting not the slightest indication of weakness, until the rope was adjusted by the Sheriff, when he was observed to be in tears. They were but for a moment, however, he recovered his composure and died without a struggle.

The Marshall of the day, Col. Hughston, discharged his arduous duties to the satisfaction of all, and although the number present could not have been under 10o,000 and has been estimated by competent judges at 15,000, the most strict order and decorum was observed and no accident's of any kind occurred during the day.

The body, after hanging 35 minutes, was taken down and delivered to the friends of the prisoner, by whom it was taken to Columbus [Chenango Co. NY] where, we understand, a funeral sermon is this day to be delivered.
