Obituaries (July 19)

Joseph S. May
Chenango Union, October 14, 1868
At White Store, (Norwich) [Chenango Co., NY], Sept. 9th, Joseph S. May aged 42 years.
All alone in his lowly bed,
The husband and father is sleeping,
And he heeds not the sighs, nor the tears that are shed.
And he hears not the accents of weeping.
In the prime of his strength he was smitten down.
And long were the hours of sorrow.
As the days went by in anguish and pain,
With no hope for the glad tomorrow,
No hope, till the angel of death came near,
And stilled the heart's wild beating
And the sufferer gazed on his foe without fear.
And prayed for a joyful meeting,
With those he loved in a fairer clime.
Where sorrow and sickness shall never
Be suffered to mar the peaceful rest
Of those who are saved forever.

Mary Jane (Haight) Peck
Chenango Union, September 1, 1881
Mrs. F.H. Peck, who has been very low with typhoid fever, is thought to be better, and hopes are entertained of her recovery.
Chenango Union, September 8, 1881

Mrs. F.H. Peck, whose illness we have mentioned heretofore, died on Saturday last, at about 10 o'clock A.M.  Her disease, which extended through a period of nearly three months was pronounced by the doctors typhoid fever, and her condition was such at times as to give rise to illusive hopes that she would recover--hopes which only made the inevitable harder to bear.  It would be difficult to find a woman in this community who would be more missed than Mrs. Peck will be.  In cases of sickness or death, no one was ever readier with sympathy and assistance than she, and no one could endue the pains of a long sickness with more patience and fortitude than did she, when she came to require the ministraitons of others.  Her age was 57 years.  Her funeral will take place from her late residence on Monday, at two o'clock.

Obituaries (July 16)

David P. Field
Chenango Union, March 12, 1885
FIELD:  In this town [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY], March 7th, Mr. David P. Field, aged 63 years.

Rockwells Mills [Chenango Co., NY]:  The Union M.E. Church has again met with a great loss in the death of Mr. David Field, one of its most worthy and exemplary members.  When a good man dies the people mourn, and now not only his family but the whole church and community mourn, and extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family in their great affliction.

Unadilla Valley:  The said news of David Field's death falls upon all hearts with deepest pain. A noble, true, Christian man, he will be missed in the church and society, a well as in his family.  His funeral is to be attended March 9th, at his late residence.

Chenango Union, March 19, 1885
The large attendance of citizens from Norwich, New Berlin, Greene, Mt. Upton, Union, etc., at Mr. Field's funeral, spoke eloquently of the esteem in which he was held by the entire community.  Those who had seen his blameless Christian walk for more than forty years, learned how he triumphed over "the last enemy."  It was a scene not soon to be forgotten.  In one room lay his wife, who had not seen his face since both were prostrated by measles, her life wavering in the balance, but she must look upon his face once more alone.  On the beautiful casket lay a sickle of white roses and calla lilies, the gift of Mrs. D.M. Holmes, of Norwich, its fragrance like that of the life just ended. The casket was tenderly borne in the arms of his two brothers to the bedside of the sick wife, and with only his two sons to witness, the last farewell was said.  One lay as if sweetly sleeping, the other with shining face from the conscious presence of Christ and His angels, looked her last upon her best earthly friend. The sting of death was gone.  After a sermon of great power from his pastor, Rev. J. Bradshaw, some of his words of holy triumph were recounted.  Alice, an only and beloved daughter, had passed away twenty-seven years before.  This was the anniversary of her death.  He said twice, "Alice will be here at seven."  The hour struck, and father and daughter were together in Paradise.  Just before his death his sister, seeing his arched, bleeding lips, said to him:
"Shall I wet your lips for you?"
"The Lord does that for me," he answered.
"With the water of life?"
He bowed his head in assent.  "Unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood. And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever," he repeated in holy triumph.
"I wish I could sing," he said.
"What would you sing?" was asked.
"Father all Glorious, O'er all Victorious," he said, waving his hands in triumph and saying "Happy, happy--so happy."
When he seemed drifting far out on eternity's ocean, he was recalled with difficulty.
"Are you comfortable? was asked.
"Sweet, sweet, sweet," was the answer.
"Is Jesus Precious?"
The answer was the same:
"Sweet, sweet, sweet,"
Thus he passed through the portals into the presence of Him he adored.
Mrs. E.J. Richmond

Mary (Shippey) Field
Norwich Sun, April 24, 1905
Mt. Upton [Chenango Co., NY]:  Tidings of the death of Mrs. Mary Field, widow of David Field was a shock to her many friends and to Union church, of which she had long been a valued member.  This is the eighth death of aged members since Rev. F.D. Hartsock entered the pastorate four years ago.  Many have been added to the church during those years, and we trust the old centennial church may complete another century.

Mrs. Mary Field, widow of David Field, died at her home about one mile west of White Store, Tuesday, at 3 p.m., aged 83 years.  Funeral will occur Friday at 12 o'clock, Rev. B. P. Ripley of Mt. Upton, officiating.  Burial at White Store [Chenango Co., NY].

Otsego Journal, April 27, 1905
The death of Mrs. Field occurred at her home with her son Stanley P. Field, two miles west of White Store, on Tuesday afternoon last.  She was born in Norwich, N.Y. [Chenango Co.], eighty three years ago and her long and useful life was spent on the spot where she died after a brief illness, surrounded by those whose loving care had smoothed the pathway of her declining years and enjoying the respect of all who knew her.  Mrs. Field was the daughter of Philemon and Sally Shippey and came of Puritan stock. She was married to David P Field by the Rev. J.C. Ransom of Oxford, May 31, 1870, surviving her husband by many years. The deep and untiring devotedness of her home life, marked by faithful and constant self sacrifice, remain as a blessed memory to those of her family who survive her.  Of her Christian life and her relations to her family and the community the world can only accord the judgment due every true woman, whose life has been a blessing and whose memory is a benediction to those who have known her best.  Mrs. Field is survived by one sister, Cynthia Shippey, also a member of the family, and by two step sons, Stanley P. Field, with whom she resided, and Stephen Olin Field of Norwich.  Mrs. Field had been a member of the Methodist church for sixty yeas, and always faithfully identified with its welfare and best interests. Funeral services occurred from the home on Saturday last at one o'clock, Rev. Wilson Treible, of Norwich officiating. The attendance of relatives and friends was large and was a tribute to the personal worth and to the memory of Mrs. Field, who sleeping beneath a profusion of the choicest and most beautiful flowers of the spring time, was laid at rest in Evergreen Cemetery, White Store, by the side of her husband and other members of the family who had already passed to the other side.

And hopes, so fragrant once, are now dissolved in air.

George E. Burrows
Chenango American, Monday 7, 1861
At his father's residence in this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 20th ult.  Mr. George E. Burrows, aged 30 years.

He has been prostrated three years with a scrofulous disease [tuberculosis], the last two of which he has been enabled to bear his sufferings with patience in hope, through faith in Jesus, of that country where the inhabitant never says "I am sick," and particularly for the last few weeks his Bible has been his companion, and he has delighted to converse of the love of Christ, saying that it was "his meat and drink"; and when struggling with the last enemy he said "he was happy" in answer to questions from friends.

 Anna Sofia "Johnson" Swenson
Died February 26, 1935, South New Berlin, NY
Tuesday morning, February 26, 1935, just as the sun in all its glory was rising over the mountain, the spirit of Anna Swenson took its flight to her heavenly home.  This community was shocked to hear that Mrs. Martin Swenson had passed away. Although in poor health, she was looking forward to the spring time and sunshine to regain her health.  She was always cheerful, a splendid neighbor and friend, and will be missed in the community, but more sadly missed from the home from which she has gone.  Anna Sofia "Johnson" Swenson was born in Sweden, September 13, 1883, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson, where her early life was spent.  As a young woman she traveled quite extensively, having visited Germany, France, England and many other countries.  Coming to America May 1, 1902, she made her home in New York city.  Being a cateress of ability, she spent several years in the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Nickolas Longworth, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dana Gibson, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Stone, and many others.  She has visited nealy every state, making many friends whereever she went. She was united in marriage to Martin Swenson August 18, 1917, and unto them one daughter, Caroline, was born, who, with the husband, are left to mourn for a beautiful wife and mother. She leaves bsides one brother, in Bridgepot Conn., four brothers and one sister in Sweden, several cousins and many friends.  Her funeral was held Friday, March 1, from the Baptist church in South New Berlin, and was largely attended.  Rev. C.H. Skinner spoke words of comfort to the bereaved.  She looked so restful in her beautiful casket, surrounded by the beautiful flowers she loved so much. The burial was in South new Berlin.  The bearers were their friends they have made since coming to this community to live; Alfred Lawson, Leon Lewis, Merton Morse, Robert Cairns, Alfred Anderson.

Lay the casket where the snowflakes pure and white, like angels' wings carpet over the mound with beauty, waiting for the showers of spring, to bring forth the peeping blossoms of the lilies sweet and fair, like the life now passed before us, only waiting over there.  May the mourners in their sorrow look to Him who ruleth all, gaining strength from unseen power, to accept our Master's call.   M.A.M.

Roys Lewis White
Died February 3, 1933, New Berlin, NY
Roys Lewis White, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. George White of White's Pond, died at the family home about 7:30 Friday night. The deceased was graduated from the South New Berlin high school in 1926 since which time he had resided at home.  Besides his father and mother he is survived by nine brothers and sisters, Mrs. Arthur Farrell of Narrowsberg, Ruth, Mason, Sally, Frank, Mary, George, Arvin and Benjamin White who resided at home.  Funeral services were held at the Baptist chuch in this village Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev C. H. Skinner officiating.

Francelia (Burke) Swanson
Died October 28, 1939
Mrs. Carl Swanson, a resident of this community for 52 years passed away at her home just below the village Saturday, October 28, 1939, at about 6 o'clock p.m., death being due to cerebral hemorrhage.  In August she suffered a very severe shock, which affected her entire side and rendered her speechless. She was taken immediately to the Chase Memorial hospital in New Berlin for treatment.  She recovered somewhat and was brought to her home south of this village; but she failed to gain strength.  Mrs. Francelia Swanson was one of several children of Christian Burke and Nellie Harp Burke and was born at East Guilford, N.Y. [Chenango Co.], December 16, 1875, where her early childhood days were spent.  In 1894 she became the wife of Carl Swanson and unto them was born one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Shillabeer.  Beside the husband and daughter, mentioned above, there survive a granddaughter, Miss Gertrude Shillabeer and several nieces and nephews, a brother, Henry Burke of Binghamton, two sisters, Mrs. George Sexsmith of Oneonta, and Mrs. Hattie Hibbard of Harpursville. The deceased was a member of the Baptist church; a home-loving woman who endeared herself to her family and friends. The funeral was held from the late home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the pastor, Rev. Clinton H. Skinner, officiating.  Burial was in Riverside cemetery. There was a large attendance at the funeral of friends and neighbors, and many beautiful floral tributes testified the respect and esteem of the departed.
