Obituaries (July 19)

Joseph S. May
Chenango Union, October 14, 1868
At White Store, (Norwich) [Chenango Co., NY], Sept. 9th, Joseph S. May aged 42 years.
All alone in his lowly bed,
The husband and father is sleeping,
And he heeds not the sighs, nor the tears that are shed.
And he hears not the accents of weeping.
In the prime of his strength he was smitten down.
And long were the hours of sorrow.
As the days went by in anguish and pain,
With no hope for the glad tomorrow,
No hope, till the angel of death came near,
And stilled the heart's wild beating
And the sufferer gazed on his foe without fear.
And prayed for a joyful meeting,
With those he loved in a fairer clime.
Where sorrow and sickness shall never
Be suffered to mar the peaceful rest
Of those who are saved forever.

The most severe storm of the season claimed one victim in the sudden death early Saturday of Ernest F. Parker, 52, of 73 West Main [Norwich, Chenango Co., NY] who died at his home following a heart attack.  Mr. Parker, an employee of The Norwich Pharmacal Company was in his usual good health Friday and worked at his employment.  He did a large amount of shoveling Friday night at his residence and that effort is believed to have provoked the fatal illness.  Mr. Parker was born in Potsdam, August 5, 1894, the son of George and Cora (Parkhill) Parker.  A resident of this city for 22 years, he has been a valued employee of The Norwich Pharmacal Company for 21 years.  A veteran of World War I, he was a member of the American legion and Norwich Lodge 302 F. and A. Devine Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Rev. Glenn Wilson, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church will officiate. The body is to rest in the Mt. Mary Jane (Haight) Peck
Chenango Union, September 1, 1881
Mrs. F.H. Peck, who has been very low with typhoid fever, is thought to be better, and hopes are entertained of her recovery.
Chenango Union, September 8, 1881

Mrs. F.H. Peck, whose illness we have mentioned heretofore, died on Saturday last, at about 10 o'clock A.M.  Her disease, which extended through a period of nearly three months was pronounced by the doctors typhoid fever, and her condition was such at times as to give rise to illusive hopes that she would recover--hopes which only made the inevitable harder to bear.  It would be difficult to find a woman in this community who would be more missed than Mrs. Peck will be.  In cases of sickness or death, no one was ever readier with sympathy and assistance than she, and no one could endue the pains of a long sickness with more patience and fortitude than did she, when she came to require the ministraitons of others.  Her age was 57 years.  Her funeral will take place from her late residence on Monday, at two o'clock.
