Obituaries (July 14)

George E. Burrows
Chenango American, Monday 7, 1861
At his father's residence in this town [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 20th ult.  Mr. George E. Burrows, aged 30 years.

He has been prostrated three years with a scrofulous disease [tuberculosis], the last two of which he has been enabled to bear his sufferings with patience in hope, through faith in Jesus, of that country where the inhabitant never says "I am sick," and particularly for the last few weeks his Bible has been his companion, and he has delighted to converse of the love of Christ, saying that it was "his meat and drink"; and when struggling with the last enemy he said "he was happy" in answer to questions from friends.

 Anna Sofia "Johnson" Swenson
Died February 26, 1935, South New Berlin, NY
Tuesday morning, February 26, 1935, just as the sun in all its glory was rising over the mountain, the spirit of Anna Swenson took its flight to her heavenly home.  This community was shocked to hear that Mrs. Martin Swenson had passed away. Although in poor health, she was looking forward to the spring time and sunshine to regain her health.  She was always cheerful, a splendid neighbor and friend, and will be missed in the community, but more sadly missed from the home from which she has gone.  Anna Sofia "Johnson" Swenson was born in Sweden, September 13, 1883, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson, where her early life was spent.  As a young woman she traveled quite extensively, having visited Germany, France, England and many other countries.  Coming to America May 1, 1902, she made her home in New York city.  Being a cateress of ability, she spent several years in the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Nickolas Longworth, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dana Gibson, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Stone, and many others.  She has visited nealy every state, making many friends whereever she went. She was united in marriage to Martin Swenson August 18, 1917, and unto them one daughter, Caroline, was born, who, with the husband, are left to mourn for a beautiful wife and mother. She leaves bsides one brother, in Bridgepot Conn., four brothers and one sister in Sweden, several cousins and many friends.  Her funeral was held Friday, March 1, from the Baptist church in South New Berlin, and was largely attended.  Rev. C.H. Skinner spoke words of comfort to the bereaved.  She looked so restful in her beautiful casket, surrounded by the beautiful flowers she loved so much. The burial was in South new Berlin.  The bearers were their friends they have made since coming to this community to live; Alfred Lawson, Leon Lewis, Merton Morse, Robert Cairns, Alfred Anderson.

Lay the casket where the snowflakes pure and white, like angels' wings carpet over the mound with beauty, waiting for the showers of spring, to bring forth the peeping blossoms of the lilies sweet and fair, like the life now passed before us, only waiting over there.  May the mourners in their sorrow look to Him who ruleth all, gaining strength from unseen power, to accept our Master's call.   M.A.M.

Francelia (Burke) Swanson
Died October 28, 1939
Mrs. Carl Swanson, a resident of this community for 52 years passed away at her home just below the village Saturday, October 28, 1939, at about 6 o'clock p.m., death being due to cerebral hemorrhage.  In August she suffered a very severe shock, which affected her entire side and rendered her speechless. She was taken immediately to the Chase Memorial hospital in New Berlin for treatment.  She recovered somewhat and was brought to her home south of this village; but she failed to gain strength.  Mrs. Francelia Swanson was one of several children of Christian Burke and Nellie Harp Burke and was born at East Guilford, N.Y. [Chenango Co.], December 16, 1875, where her early childhood days were spent.  In 1894 she became the wife of Carl Swanson and unto them was born one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Shillabeer.  Beside the husband and daughter, mentioned above, there survive a granddaughter, Miss Gertrude Shillabeer and several nieces and nephews, a brother, Henry Burke of Binghamton, two sisters, Mrs. George Sexsmith of Oneonta, and Mrs. Hattie Hibbard of Harpursville. The deceased was a member of the Baptist church; a home-loving woman who endeared herself to her family and friends. The funeral was held from the late home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the pastor, Rev. Clinton H. Skinner, officiating.  Burial was in Riverside cemetery. There was a large attendance at the funeral of friends and neighbors, and many beautiful floral tributes testified the respect and esteem of the departed.
