Catherine R. Juliand
Chenango American, January 21, 1864
In this village [Greene, Chenango Co., NY], on the 13th inst., Mrs. Catherine R. [Juliand], wife of the Hon. F. Juliand, aged 51 years.

Among the consolations left to bereaved Christian friends in the departure of those they love out of this mortal state, conspicuous is the memory of their talents and virtues.  When those have been marked and noticeable there is a melancholy pleasure in recounting and reviewing them. While the remembrance of those exalted qualities intensifies the pangs of separation, yet in the Christian view of the duty of submission to the Divine Will, we can be thankful for the excellence of character that it was our privilege ot know and witness.  These thoughts suggest themselves to the heart of bereaved affection in contemplating the loss which the Home, the Church and Society have sustained in the decease of the friend here recorded. She was singularly gifted with those qualities of mind and heart which fit their possession to adorn the position which they fill.  In the Active in all the spheres just named, and faithful to the claims which they exacted, she was never weary in the effort to accomplisch the tasks which God in His Providence had assigned her.  Her attachment to the Church was the product of early pious nature in her holy way deepened by an intelligent appreciation of the claims which this sacred relationship involved.  Elevated in all her principles, with an ever strong sense of duty, she shrank from no call which the varied exactions of her position involved.  Countless were her acts of considerate kindness towards her Pastor and his family which are now recalled with tender recollection.  Frail though she was in body, yet alive in all works of home and Christian duty beyond the measure of her physical power.  Blessed with high intelligence with rare conversational powers which enabled her to throw over subjects to which she gave her energies of thought the charm of freshness and interest, she was fitted to exert a leading influence in the circle in which she moved. Blessed with the attributes of a refined nature, the impression of a cultivated taste was visible in all that passed under her controlling eye and hand. As a devoted daughter of the Church we love to contemplate her character. Ever at her place in the sanctuary and at the table of the Lord as duty required, she gave herself to whatever tended to promote the prosperity of the Church and cause of Christ. Beneath the shadow of the Chruch and the Cross was her character opened and the fruits of that piety which such culture generates were visible in the meek, calm humble trust which she evinced as she faded away.  Thus faithful in the duties in the Communion of the Church on earth, she has passed to a reunion with beloved ones gone before, to the joys of the Church triumphant in Paradise.  In her last wearying society, she was calm, unmurmuring, happy clinging simply to the all sustaining [.?.] the force and truth of the language of the Psalmist, "Though, I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil for thou are with me, Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me."  We mourn her vacant place in the Holy Temple, in the household and in the pleasant interchanges of society.  We sympathize with the sorrows of a beloved husband and children, and with the friends to which this painful dispensation extend. We grieve that we are not again to greet her cordial welcome in these earthly shores, but we bow as she did to Him who [.?.] and humbly say, Thy will O God, be done.

Babcock of this town, and a niece, Mrs. H.W. Weeks of Binghamton, also several cousins.  Mrs. Gager was of a kindly disposition and will long be remembered by her friends at South New Berlin.  She will be sadly missed from the home.  Much sympathy is expressed for Mr. Gager and the sister, Mrs. Babcock. The funeral was held Wednesday December 4th, at their late home, Rev. Fred W. Ainslie, pastor of the First Baptist church officiating, with burial at South New Berlin [Chenango Co., NY].  Her pastor read short portions of scripture which were very comforting, followed by the "Thanatops" by William Cullen Bryant:  then followed the verses, "He Knoweth All", which Mrs. Gager requested be read.
"He Knoweth All"
The twilight falls, the night is near,
I fold my work away.
And kneel to One who bends to hear
The story of the day.

The old, old story yet I kneel;
To tell it at Thy call;
And cares grow lighter as I feel
That Jesus knows them all.

Yes, all!  the morning and the night,
The joy, the grief, the loss,
The roughened path, the sunbeam light,
The hourly thorn and cross.

Thou knowest all--I lean my head,
My weary eyelids close,
Content and glad awhile to tread
This path, since Jesus knows.

And he has loved me!  All my heart
With answering love is stirred,
And every anguished pain and smart,
Finds healing in the Word.

So here I lay me down to rest,
As nightly shadows fall,
And lean confiding on his breast
Who knows and pities all.

Herbert E. Ryan, well known and highly respected resident of East Norwich [Chenango Co., NY], expired suddenly at his home late Wednesday afternoon.  Mr. Ryan had not been in the best of health for a month, but the end came unexpectedly.  Mr. Ryan was born in East Norwich, Oct. 19, 1888, and had spent his entire life in that community.  He had been a valued employee of the O.&W. railroad for the past 38 years.  The deceased was the son of William M. and Ethel B. (Sliter) Ryan.  There survive his wife, Jessie McCall Ryan, and six children, Thomas W. of East Norwich and P.F.C. James M. of Camp Livingston La., Nellie M. Ryan, Anna C., Isabel G. and Richard A. Ryan, all of East Norwich, also one brother, Robert E. Ryan of East Norwich, two sisters, Mrs. W. Russell Fryover of Sherburne and Mrs. Clarence Thompson of Norwich.  Mr. Ryan was a member of Norwich lodge of Elks, Amicus Aerie of Eagles and the B. of L.F.&E. of which he was president.  He was also a member of the O.&W. Veterans Association.  News of Mr. Ryan's passing was learned with shock by his many friends.  Popular with his associates in railroad circles, Mr. Ryan possessed a pleasing personality and he had the desirable faculty of making friends and keeping them.  He was a leader in his community neighborhood where his counsel was frequently sought.  Mr. Ryan was always among the first to respond when any of his neighbors were in need.  His untimely passing removes one beloved by all who were fortunate to know him.  Funeral services are to be held from the family home in East Norwich Saturday morning at 9:15 and from St. Paul's church at 10 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Father Charles M. Coveny officiating. Burial will be made in St. Paul's cemetery [Norwich, NY].

Dr. Frederick Eugene Roper
Died September 8, 1941, Norwich, NY
Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Dr. Frederick Eugene Roper, said to be the oldest practicing physician in the county at the time of his death, passed away suddenly at the Chenango Memorial Hospital early this morning, aged 77 years.  Appearing in his usual health, the deceased, an ardent baseball fan, attended both games of the Norwich - Mt. Upton doubleheader yesterday afternoon at Alumni Field, where he remained until the last player was called out. Returning home shortly after 7 o'clock last night, Dr. Roper went for a walk and upon his return complained of illness.  Dr. George L. Manley was called, and upon arrival ordered Dr. Roper removed to the Chenango Memorial Hospital where he died shortly after. Born in Danby [Tompkins Co., NY], Jan. 20, 1864, Dr. Roper graduated from the Ithaca High School and from the Cleveland Homeopathic Collège in 1886.  He first practiced his profession in Cripple Creek, Colo., and later in Deposit and in 1896 he came to Norwich where he has since carried on a general practice.  For the past 20 years he has been attending physician at the Chenango Valley Home.  He was a member of the Chenango County Medical Society and the staff at the Chenango Memorial Hospital, the State Homeopathic Society, the International Homeopathic Society, and the sons of the American Revolution.  He was also a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Chruch of Norwich, the Norwich Club and the Norwich Lodge of Elks.  He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Lillian Roper, one daughter, Mrs. Franklyn W. Daley of Binghamton, three grandchildren, Reba, Rita and Florence Daley, all of Binghamton, a niece, Mrs. Robert Clark of Valley Stream, L.I. and two nephews Dr. Kent Roper of New Haven, Con., and Luther Roper of Clifton Springs. There will be prayer service at the family residence, 5 Henry street, Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock with funeral service at Emmanuel Church at 2 o'clock, the rector, the Rev. Lloyd S. Charters, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery [Norwich, NY].

Dr. Roper was known to hundreds in Norwich.  He was the trusted family physician and friend to many and genuine sorrow stirred the hearts of Norwich residents when his demise was learned.  Dr. Roper carried on a general medical practice and did not aspire toward the surgical trend.  He was faithful to every trust imposed upon him by his patients, gave untiringly of his skill and devotion to the ill, leaving behind him a record that few equal.  he had a long career of service in administering to the ill of Norwich and vicinity and he went about his work in a dignified and wholesome manner without thought of personal sacrifice or future reward.  He was quiet and modest and was held in the highest respect. For more than a score of years Dr. Roper faithfully served as physician at the Chenango Valley Home.  His visits there brought cheer to many of the aged residents of that home and his death will be mourned at that pace as in all other walks of life in this area.
