Marriage

A very happy affair occurred Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 25th, at the house of Mr. William Smith, where a few relatives and friends had been invited to witness the marriage of Miss Dora L. Smith of Oxford [Chenango Co. NY] to Mr. Nelson Niles of Richfield Springs [Otsego Co. NY].  It was two o'clock when the ceremony was performed by Rev. Bishop A. Russell, of Oxford, grandfather of the bride.  The ceremony was performed in a quiet and unostentatious manner, after which the usual congratulations and expressions of good wishes were given, and general good feelings prevailed.  That their wedded life may be one of blissful felicity is the earnest wish of their numerous friends and relatives. The happy pair took their departure for an extended wedding trip, during which they will visit Syracuse and relatives in and around Cooperstown. That their future may be without a cloud is the heartfelt wish of their grandmother.  Mrs. B.A. Russell.

C.F Janes, a former pastor of the Presbyterian Chruch, after which the congratulations of friends followed. Refreshments, choice and suitable for the occasion, were served and the remainder of the evening until a late hour was spent in social ways. Remarkable Family

There is now living in this town [Norwich, Chenango Co. NY] a Mrs. Esther Crandall who has reached the extreme age of ninety-six years and whose health and faculties are remarkably preserved.  She remembers distinctly not only the scenes and incidents of her earlier years but also what has transpired around her up to the present time and can tell more of the ages, history, &c. of her grandchildren, than any person in the family. She is also able to read without glasses.  Mrs. Crandall has had nine children, six of whom are now living; seventy-eight grandchildren of whom forty-eight still live; and one hundred and seventeen great-grandchildren, ninety-nine of whom are still living.  Union.

Marriage

BLORE - MERITHEW:  At the residence of the bride's parents near Rockdale N.Y. [Chenango Co.], Jan. 2, 1879 by Rev. H.G. Harned, Mr. B.R. Blore of Rockdale, Chenango County and Miss Ernie G. Merithew.

Death

One day last week Cyrus McMaster, an old resident of this place [Afton, Chenango Co. NY], met with an accident which caused his death.  He was assisting in removing a hay rigging from a wagon near his barn.  He slipped and fell upon the head and shoulders, sustaining injuries resulting as above.  The funeral obsequies took pace at his late residence on Tuesday. Deceased was about eighty years of age and owned a fine farm on the river just below town.  In his earlier years he dealt quite extensively in lumber, rafting and running it down the river to Philadelphia.  In those days he was considered one of the best pilots on the river.

News Item

As is customary, the family gathering at C.B. Barr's at White Store [Chenango Co. NY], was held on Wednesday, Jan. 1st, 1879.  Besides the members of the family, there were present Mr. and Mrs. B.D. Evans of North Norwich and Miss Altie Cook of Gilbertsville.  The time passed pleasantly and rapidly away, music and singing were enjoyed by all, as was also the bountiful repast, which was duly served and appreciated and judging from appearances as the party returned from the dining room, a happy New Year had in reality commenced.

On an occasion of this kind the mind naturally wanders back over the interval since we last met and the incidents of joy and sorrow follow one another in quick succession, as we crowd three hundred and sixty-five days with their burden of hopes and cares into the space of a few moments.  During the year that has passed, two incidents occurred which cannot be dismissed from the mind.  One, the marriage of F.J. Barr and Miss Bertha Greene, which occurred last January.  While we welcome the addition to our members with fraternal feeling, we are reminded by the absence of one sweet winsome countenance, that little Georgie Curtis has passed from this to a brighter world above and that our broken circle is already united in heaven and one of our number is one of the white robed throng there awaiting us over the river, thus "one by one they are passing over" and we are reminded to lay up our treasure in heaven, that where the treasure is, there the heart may be also.

Birth

Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Scofield, on Pine Hill, were the recipients of a bouncing baby boy on Saturday last. Grandpa Scofield says, as it is the first grandchild that bears his name he feels better about the "word (or name) being forever lost."  May the boy grow up in integrity and fidelity and become as accomplished as "Hiram" of old.  Hiram is his grandpa's name.

Death

Bennettsville, Chenango Co. NY:  The news has reached us of the death of Mrs. John Transue who left this place for Kansas about a year ago.

Biography

Mr. Jeduthun Roe was born at North East, Dutchess County [NY] April 1st, 1787, and is consequently now in the 92d year of his age.  He enlisted in the war of 1812, and after his discharge, was married to Miss Jerusia Griffins, February 29, 1815.  He remained at North East until about the year of 1846, when he purchased a farm on the north side of the river opposite of this village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co. NY], where he moved his family and remained till 1855.  He then sold out to Messrs. Peck & Sornberger and bought a farm on the Unadilla River near East Guilford [Chenango Co. NY], where he remained a few years and again sold out.  He now resides with his youngest daughter, Mrs. Augusta Foster, about two miles east of this place.  His first wife died December 31st, 1851, and he was again married in 1858.  His second wife died some two years ago.  In his form and carriage, he is still erect, and one can mark but little change in his outward appearances for the last twenty years.  He frequently walks to town in preference to the trouble of driving a horse.  He attends to all his own business transactions, in collecting interest and loaning money and is one of the most prompt and exacting of businessmen, and when compared to others in age he has no superior.  He is energetic, with a strong and determined will in what he believes to be right.  Possessing good morals and habits, his life is an example worthy of limitation, and as a "Landmark" of age and experience, will not be readily forgotten.

LEWIS:  In Hesperia, Mich. Nov. 13th, 1878, at the residence of Charles Camp, Mrs. Rhoda Lewis aged 98 years, formerly of Pharsalia [Chenango Co. NY].

The remains of one of our worthy and aged citizens, the late Rhoda Lewis, were this day brought to this place [Pharsalia] for interment from Hesperia, Mich., her late residence.  She was the last one of both her own and her deceased husband's family, all having gone before her several years ago.  She was born in Stonington, Ct., July 1st, 1780, and immigrated to Pharsalia with her parents, Joseph and Rhoda Breed in 1795, and was married to the late William Lewis, December 3d, 1807, with whom she happily lived until his decease, bearing seven children, all of whom are now living, save one.  She resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Judge Camp, at the time of her last illness, which was of short duration, being pleuro-pneumonia, which resulted in death on November 13th, 1878.  She possessed rare mental faculties and physical endurance, retaining them admirably until her death.  Reared in the days when mothers and daughters manufactured from raw material nearly every fabric, both of wearing apparel and household goods, that were needed to make home comfortable and happy, performing all this with neatness and agility; ever industrious ever anxious to assist the needy; a kind, loving mother, a true and able friend in counsel; always directing her energies in the direction of harmony and happiness.  And as we stood around the grave wherein her remains had just been lowered considering all the circumstances that had brought us there under those conditions, our thoughts went back to her recently bereft home whose occupants by whom she was dearly beloved and by whom everything had been done to comfort and perfect her cherished desire, which we had just accomplished by placing her remains beside her husband's who had gone before her twenty-five years ago, and as cousin truly said, we have done all we can.  We have finished that which she has been anxiously waiting to have done for her so many years, and now her spirit has entered that condition of spiritual existence wherein knowledge and wisdom naturally gravitate together, growing better, greater and wiser, gong to and comprehending world's innumerable, that spin their blazon censors around the god of day, for endless ages. Friends, let us be like her, work patiently, wait fearlessly.  It is only a brief period or step, and we will all be there.  Pharsalia, N.Y., Nov. 18, 1878.

Our former townsman, Nelson O. Wood, Esq. met with a serious accident on Monday evening last, soon after his return from this village to his farm near Plasterville.  He had put out his team and while leading one horse from the stable to water, in passing behind the other, the latter kicked, upon which the horse he was leading sprang forward against Mr. Wood, throwing him violently to the floor, and breaking his right hip.  Dr. Lewis, of North Norwich, and Dr Avery of this village were called, who reduced the fracture, and the patient is comfortable.

WOOD:  In North Norwich [Chenango Co. NY] Jan. 8th, Mr. Nelson O. Wood in the 69th year of his age.

On Wednesday evening of last week, Nelson O. Wood expired at his residence in North Norwich, from the effects of injuries received in his horse barn on the evening of December 31st, an account of which we published at the time.  For a few days after the accident it was thought he might recover, but his case took a more alarming turn, pneumonia set in, and notwithstanding the efforts of physicians and friends, death ensued.

Deceased was the only son of the late Newell Wood, who early settled in North Norwich (then Norwich) on the farm upon which Nelson was born and upon which he spent the greater portion of his life, acquiring by unceasing toll a handsome property.  In politics Mr. Wood was a Whig, and afterwards Republican, and repeatedly represented North Norwich in the Board of Supervisors.  Removing to this village several years since, he was chosen Supervisor of Norwich for one year and was for one year a Trustee of the village. Reverses came upon him and within a few years his well earned competency was gone.  He was a poor man, and that through no extravagance on his part, and he returned to the old farm, now owned by another, to end his days in toil and hardship, where he had begun them sixty-nine years ago.

Both in public and private life, Mr. Wood discharged his duties faithfully and well, and although stripped of his hard earnings, his integrity was unquestioned, and he leaves behind him a name untarnished, while his memory will be cherished by a large circle of friends, who knew his worth Deceased was never married, and leaves one sister, the last of the family.

The funeral was held at his late residence, on Sunday afternoon and was attended by Masons and Odd Fellows of this village, of which lodges he was a member, as well as of the Commandery and Encampment.  Members of these orders from other lodges were also in attendance, as also a large number of friends and neighbors. Rev. S. Scoville conducted the services and the remains were interred in the cemetery east of Plasterville [Chenango Co. NY].

Mason and Albert F. Gladding, Esqrs., of this village, were in attendance, as were Judges Murray and Martin, of this Judicial District, Judge Edwards and Ex-Judge Loomis and others, of Binghamton.  Judge Follett, of Norwich; W.R. Osborn, Edward R. Clark and J.S. Wells of Binghamton and J.W. Glover and F.P. Newkirk, of Oxford, acted as pallbearers.  The services at the church were conducted by Rev. R.M. Duff of Oxford, Rev. M.C. Lightner and Rev. R.H. Parke, D.D. of Binghamton, and were very impressive.

News Item

A family called Huckster alias  Hogstead resides in an old house owned by Mr. Ertz about two miles north of this village [Sherburne, Chenango Co. NY], in an out of the way place. the family is (or at least was) composed of Mr. Huckster, wife and four children.  Mrs. Huckster married a man named Cook in Germany before marrying Huckster, by whom she had two children, William and Charles, aged 24 and 20 years respectively.  She afterwards at the decease of Cook, came to this country and united her fortune with Huckster by whom she has two children, the one a boy aged 6 years, the other a girl aged 2 years.  Huckster and his little son were in the habit of going around the town begging.  Now Huckster has mysteriously disappeared and cannot be found.  His wife and her two sons insist that he went to New York two weeks since on legal business.  His little son affirms that Hiram Prince shot his father in the woods. At about Christmas it is reported that his family turned him away, telling him not to return.  However, he did return, and it is alleged has been foully dealt with.  Mrs. Huckster tells several things concerning his disappearance which prove untrue. Again, it is stated that Charles Cook was told by William that the old man had gone to Utica to make rope. A part of Huckster's clothes are at home and as he was poorer than Job's turkey, he must have left home almost naked if he left at all.  No official notice has been taken of the affair as yet. Though Coroner Lyman stands in readiness to take such notice when the facts will warrant. The Darwinian theory would find in Huckster a typical subject of "Evolution," and a subject not many times evolved from Darwin's original.

Chenango Union, Norwich, NY, Feb. 13, 1879:  Huckster has been carried "over the hills to the poor house."  He arrived here Thursday, in a very destitute condition.  His face, hands, feet and a portion of his body, were badly frozen.  On his way to the alms house, it is reported that he called on his family, now residing at North Norwich, and met with a very warm reception.  It seems impossible that a man could endure such suffering in so enlightened a community.  However, he is very ignorant, as well as very lazy.

Death by Lightning:  William C. W. Carruth son of Levi Carruth, Esq. of McDonough [Chenango Co. NY] was instantly killed by a stroke of lightning on Saturday morning last. We learn that young Mr. Carruth, in company with three others, had early repaired to the field for the purpose of securing hay, and that just at the moment when they were about to start for the house, the fatal event took place. A palm leaf hat on the head of Mr. C. was torn to tatters.  The shock prostrated Mr. Aaron Slater, who was about two rods distant, but he immediately recovered. The two other persons, who were a little farther off, though much affected by the shock were not brought to the ground.

Mr. Carruth, who has been thus cut down, was 20 years of age, and was a young man highly respected by all who knew him.

In Oxford [Chenango Co. NY] on Tuesday the 31st of July of consumption, Miss Mary Elizabeth [Willcox] youngest daughter of Ira Willcox, Esq. aged 18 years.

We copy the following tribute to the worth of this young lady from the Oxford Republican:

In the sickness and death of this interesting young lady, our community have been allowed to witness one of those sublime exhibitions of Christian fortitude in affliction and triumph over death, so rarely seen in this world of sin and selfishness.  Surrounded from her infancy with all that could render life desirable, she grew up like a beautiful, fragrant, and delicate flower, the joy and delight of her fond parents and youthful associates.  Modest and retiring in her manners and habits, her character was but little known out of the immediate circle of her family and school mates.  Her mind in its gradual development has appeared to the writer of this brief notice to combine more of the solid and valuable qualities than that of  any other young person of his acquaintance.  She possessed not merely a taste but a passion for literature and her acquisitions in all the branches which constitute a useful as well as an ornamental and polite education were of the first order.

But her discriminating and inquiring mind soon became assured that much was still needed to constitute true happiness, after wealth, aided by science and worldly wisdom had done their utmost.  She sought and found that "pearl of great price."  Jesus Christ and his cross were chosen while yet in the springtime of life and health, by this highly gifted young lady as her only hope and portion forever, and so deliberate and solemn, so fervent and entire was the surrender of her heart to her God and Savior that she seemed to live only to exhibit his glory and do his will.

She possessed uncommon maturity of mind for her age, and her advancement in religious knowledge in the hidden life of the Christian were proportionally rapid and in her few brief years she doubtless accomplished more of preparation for her heavenly home than many Christians who live their three score years and ten.

In her last illness her mind seemed wholly stayed on God and through all the tedious weeks and months of her confinement, she seemed more anxious to reconcile and prepare her friends for what separation which she saw was inevitable, than for her own comfort and recovery, and her attempts, so full of tenderness and holy affection to soothe and console her heart stricken parents and only sister, were among the most touching exhibitions of Christian feeling and natural affection we ever witnessed.

As she drew near the closing scenes, her mind seemed still brighter and clearer and all of her acquaintance who approached her bedside were addressed while her strength lasted in the fervent language of Christian affection and regard.  The world and all mere worldly objects seemed to have lost their place in her heart, and it was apparent to all that she was fitted for a purer moral atmosphere than this world can furnish.

No more. The angel of the Covenant / Was come and faithful to his promise stood / Prepared to walk with her thro' death's dark vale. / And now her eyes grow bright, and brighter still. / Too bright for ours to look upon, suffused / with many tears, and closed without a cloud, / They set as sets the morning star, which goes / Not down behind the darkened west, nor hidden / Obscured among the tempest of the sky / But melts away into the light of heaven."

_________________________

In Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY] o Friday, Aug. 24th, after a short but painful illness, Norman [Redfield] son of Henry and Polly Redfield, aged 15 years.

For a second time within the last few months have the bereaved parents and friends of the deceased been called to part with one of those whom they dearly loved.  first the career of an only daughter was brought to a premature close by that most appalling and fatal disease, consumption.  And while the fountain which their grief for her had opened was yet gushing forth its bitter waters, they have again felt the hand of death among them.

The many virtues of the deceased require this brief tribute to his memory.  In him were combined all we could look for in more mature age.  With the mind of a philosopher, ambitious and energetic in his studies, mild, amiable, lovely and affectionate in disposition, he had won the esteem of all who knew him.  One short week since and he was the companion of the school mates who today with heart felt grief have followed his remains to that place of rest from which there is no return.  It speaks to them in renewed language "be ye also ready."  To his afflicted relatives, we would say look to God for relief.

"A bruised reed he will not break, / Affliction all his children feel, / He wounds them for his mercy's sake, / He wounds to heal."

Death

On the 12th instant, in the forty-fifth year of his age, Mr. James Grantt for some time past the foreman of the City Gazette Office, leaving a wife and large circle of friends to deplore his death.  Mr. Grantt was a man of patient and active industry. He has on a particular occasion composed upwards of thirteen thousand M's in nine hours; a task probably never exceeded.  To his industry Mr. Grantt united honesty and candor in the highest degree, preferring rather to give offence by speaking the truth, than to please by hypocrisy.  In his profession, he never locked up his thoughts but took truth for his rule of conduct.  Yet he never like to engage in squabbles.  A pious protestant and of the Methodist persuasion, he was never spoiled by the society of monks or friars, and though death has erased his name from the living, it is hoped his few errata have been corrected and his name placed on the resister of Heaven, Charleston City Gazette, 19th November.

Today we are in the full vigor of health - tomorrow, where are we?  Our souls, perhaps are hastening to their eternal judge, and our friends are preparing to perform the last said obsequies to our earthly remains.

The deceased has left five small children, four of whom are daughters, who will long mourn the loss of a tender mother, her husband that of an affectionate wife, and the female circle at Greene, have to lament the loss of one of its brightest, best and most excellent members.
