JOHNSON:  A boy five years old, son of Mr. Johnson, who occupies the Campbell farm, two miles south of this place [Oneida, Madison Co. NY], was seen entering their barn about ten o'clock on Thursday morning, with a small stick on fire.  It was supposed he was using the fire to light a pipe which he had.  Shortly after smoke was seen issuing from the barn, when efforts were made to find the child and extinguish the flames, both of which however were unsuccessful.  It was supposed at first that the child had accidentally set fire to the barn and frightened at what he had done, had hid himself in the woods nearby.  All efforts to find the little fellow proving unavailing, after the barn had burned down search was made in the smoldering embers when the bones of the boy were found.  There were in the barn only two or three tons of hay and a small amount of straw.  We did not ascertain he loss.

McCALE:  Sarah McCale aged 9 years, daughter of John McCale who resides in this village [Oneida, Madison Co. NY] north of the railroad, came to her death on Tuesday morning under very painful circumstances.  On Tuesday night, while engaged in parching corn, her clothes caught fire and before the flames could be extinguished, her limbs and body were burned in the most terrible manner.  Dr. Spooner was called in, but there was no hope of saving her life. Anodynes were administered and after lingering about 36 hours without much apparent pain she breathed her last. She was a bright and intelligent child, and her sad death has cast a gloom over a bereaved and afflicted household.

Remarkable Longevity

Many years ago, when all west of Hudson River was almost a trackless wilderness, Asa White and wife left his Vermont home and settled in Bainbridge [Chenango Co. NY].  He afterwards removed to Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY] where he resided until his death.  During his residence in Sherburne, he had seven children born unto him, all of whom are still living [in 1879] and whose ages are as follows:

Richmond White, 83; Mrs. Isabell White Merrills, 79; Dr. Devello White, 78; William White, 76; Mrs. Lavinia White Carrier, 73; Mrs. Eunice White Corbin, 69; Mrs. Dr. E.S. Lyman, 65

The aggregate ages of these seven living children, constituting all of Asa's progeny, it will be seen is five hundred and twenty-five years. All are in remarkable health for persons of such great age, and Uncle Richmond says if he has a pair of legs without rheumatism, he would be "just as young as he used to be."  All still reside in Sherburne except William who now resides in Coventry [Chenango Co. NY] and Mrs. Corbin in Bainbridge.  Dr. White is well-known as one of the most successful medical practitioners in this section of the state. The other sons are now farmers and all of the "children" are of the highest respectability and enjoy the confidence and esteem of all who know them. We doubt if a similar case of longevity in a family exists in this section foo the country.  May their circle long remain unbroken.  Chenango Telegraph.

Thess. 4, 14.

The destroying angel has executed a commission which has called the tender mother, the affectionate wife and the sincere friend in the bloom of life and in the midst of usefulness, to walk through the dark valley and shadow of death, without fear of its terrors.  For its paths were illuminated by the countenance of the Saviour.  During a very severe illness, patience and resignation rose superior to the pains of the body and when the spirit obtained its release and winged its way to the mansion of eternal rest, then was it that her friends were left in doubt whether most to mourn her loss or rejoice at her happy exchange of time for eternity. _____________________________

The inquest over the body of John H. Spencer of which we made mention last week, met at the Chenango house in this village [Greene, Chenango Co. NY] last Friday afternoon at one o'clock and spent all the afternoon and evening taking evidence. The witnesses were principally from Sherburne [Chenango Co. NY], and their evidence was relative to the manner in which Spencer lived with Mrs. Root, the woman with whom he lived, the threats made by her and the manner in which Spencer died. They testified that Mrs. Root and Spencer lived very unpleasantly together and that she had frequently threatened his life by shooting, poisoning, etc.  Spencer was taken sick about midnight on Saturday, Dec. 14th, and died about 3 o'clock the following Monday morning.  His symptoms were very similar to those in cases of poisoning by arsenic. Coroner Avery went to Albany last Saturday morning for the purpose of getting a chemical analysis of the stomach, portions of the heart and some of the muscles, in order to ascertain if any arsenic could be found in the system. The inquest was adjourned until next Friday, when the physicians making the autopsy and the chemical analysis will be present and give evidence before the jury.  Public opinion is rather strong against Mrs. Root both in this vicinity and in Sherburne. She was arrested on Tuesday of last week, by Coroner Avery, and is now in Norwich jail.

Chenango American, Greene, NY, Apr. 1, 1880:  On Monday, December 15th, 1879, John B. Spencer, a resident of Sherburne, came to his death after an illness of only twenty-eight hours under circumstances that were very peculiar and very similar to those in cases of poisoning by arsenic.  He was at that time living with Lydia Scott, alias Lydia Root, and had been the most of the time for four or five years.

Mrs. Lodema Spencer, of this village [Greene, Chenango Co. NY] the divorced wife of the deceased, Mrs. Bixby, a sister of Mrs. Spencer, and Eugene Spencer, his son, were notified by friends of theirs of Sherburne of Mr. Spencer's death and went to Sherburne on the following day to attend the funeral.  Mrs. Spencer then believed there had been foul play and desired a postmortem examination of the body and wished to bring the body to Greene for interment, to all of which Mrs. Scott objected very emphatically and declared at first that Mrs. Spencer should not be present at the funeral, but finally allowed her to go to the house.  The body was then buried in Sherburne and remained there until about two weeks ago, when the same three persons caused it to be exhumed and brought to this village [Greene]. Coroner George W. Avery of Norwich was notified and came here on Monday, the 15th inst. to hold an inquest over the body....when about a dozen witnesses from Sherburne and several from this town were sworn.  Their evidence was principally relative to the manner in which Spencer and Mrs. Scott had lived together, the threats made by her and the manner in which spencer died. The testimony showed that Spencer had left Mrs. Scott once about two years ago and said that he did not dare live with her any longer, as he was afraid that she would poison him; that they had always lived unpleasantly together, and that she had repeatedly threatened his life by shooting and poisoning. The testimony of the witnesses also established that Mrs. Scott is a woman with a very low character and terrible temper..../

Dr. Williams was sworn today before the jury and testified that in the analysis made by him of the liver, arsenic was found, and the following affidavit made by Dr. Mosher was read to the jury and offered in evidence:  "Albany City and County, ss:  I, Jacob S. Mosher of the city of Albany, practicing physician and analytical chemist have examined the stomach and viscera of John B. Spencer, furnished me by Dr. George W. Avery, Coroner, and find arsenic contained therein."

The evidence was then closed and after a few moments' deliberation the following verdict was rendered by the jury:  "John B. Spencer came to his death on the morning of the 15th of December last, in the town of Sherburne, county of Chenango and State of New York by arsenical poison, and in the opinion of this jury the said poison was administered to him by Lydia Scott, alias Root, who was then living with him, and in no other way."

Mrs. Scott is confined in Chenango County jail and will have to remain there to await the action of the grand jury. Binghamton Republican.

The Muchly Married

George H. Niles, a young man who for a short time last winter ran a saloon in this village [Oxford, Chenango Co. NY] was arrested on Wednesday of last week upon the charge of bigamy. after several adjournments, his examination was held before Justice Brown on Friday and he was held for the appearance at Court, his bail being placed at $1,000 and he was lodged in the County Jail.

In August 1875, young Niles was married to Miss Olive Cummings of Smithville [Chenango Co. NY] a woman older than himself and not over intelligent but possessed of considerable property left her by her parents.  They lived together up to within a year, perhaps, and in the meantime had managed to squander a good share of the property, which neither party had brains enough to take care of. This winter Niles came to work in a paint shop in this village [Oxford], and became acquainted with Mary E. Matthewson, sister-in-law of Zolmon Lamphere, to whom he was married on the 6th inst.  As soon as his second marriage was made known, there was considerable talk indulged in and Mrs. Niles no. 2 entered complaint and the young man was captured under a bed at a house in the southwest part of the town.  Wife No. 2 says that Niles read her a paper which purported to be a bill of separation and divorce from wife no. 1 and she supposed that he was free to marry again. The paper was produced in Court and is an interesting document which should be preserved.  It is drawn up "according to the laws of the town of Greene, Chenango County, State of New York," and is signed by Olive Niles and witnessed by Simon Bixby. Whether the young man believed that the document was valid, or got it to deceive, remains to be seen.  His appearance would indicate that the former surmise is the nearest correct.  Mrs. Niles No. 1 was not present at the examination, having disappeared it is said.  Oxford Times

Howes, occupied another boat and were but a short distance from them at the time of the accident.  when the boat capsized, Miss Holmes clutched her companion and cried out "Oh Amy," and both sank without rising again.  Mr. Sandford was an expert swimmer and had saved two lives from drowning, but the death grasp of the young girl probably prevented him from saving their lives.  Mr. Howes' boat was within speaking distance and Miss Holmes cried out that her sister was in  the water.   Mr. Holmes saw them going down, pulled up, stripped off his coat and dove after them.  The water was over forty feet deep.  The young man remained down until he was exhausted and had to be helped out, but he saw nothing of the bodies.  The families of the unfortunate young people were notified and grappling for the bodies was commenced at once.  Miss Holmes was a niece of Secretary of State Beach and is described as a lady of rare accomplishments. The bodies have not yet been recovered.

In Toddsville [Otsego Co. NY], Nov. 13th, 1871, Mary Horth Murdock wife of John Murdock in the 23d year of her age.  Mrs. M's illness was peculiarly distressing, adopting by advice (not medical) severe treatment to remove what was supposed to be a cancer, but which proved on a post mortem examination to be a harmless tumor, caused her great suffering and brought her to an untimely grave.  But her friends have the consoling thought that she died in the faith of the Redeemer. Bright visions seemed hovering around her dying moments, judging from expressions that she from time to time made.  A short time previous to her spirit taking its flight, she repeated these words: "Jesus calls, how sweet the sound."  Two ladies sang a part of that beautiful hymn: "Bear me away on your snowy wings," at the conclusion of which she passed over the river to join the happy throng "Where white robed angels stand."  Her husband and relatives feel their loss deeply and have the sympathy of the whole community. [Freeman's Journal, Cooperstown, NY, Nov. 23, 1871]

A Sad Case:  On inquiry into the causes which led to the death of the young married woman of Toddsville , whose obituary notice is published this week, we learned that she consulted with a physician of this village, who assured her that she had nothing to fear from a small tumor on the breast, which some of her relatives thought might be a cancer.  Notwithstanding this, she was induced to consult a "cancer doctor" by the name of McDonald, residing in Middlefield [Otsego Co. NY], who applied a plaster to her breast.  Soon after she was taken sick and was advised by a physician who was called to remove the plaster, as the probable cause. This she, under advice of some of her friends, declined to do. The result was that after wearing it a week she died. Dr. Hills of Exeter, held a Coroner's inquest on the body and the facts in the case revealed on postmortem examination, pointed to the plaster as the cause of her death.  The deceased appeared to have been poisoned by the absorption into the system of some mineral poison. The plaster had been burned up by a relative.  Portions of the body were sent to Doct. Porter of Albany for examination.  McDonald has been arrested and held to bail. When will people learn to take advice in such serious matters only from some regular physician?  As to the tribe of "cancer doctors," no one of them ever effected a cure.  Freeman's Journal
