Four Generations - Johnson/Aldrich family 1910

Four Generations
Utica Saturday Globe, July 1910

Standing:  Mrs. Radzell Aldrich, Mason Aldrich
Sitting:  Mrs. Sabrina Johnson holding Gilbert Aldrich

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  That Norwich seeks to excel in other lines besides those that tend only to commercial progress is evidenced by the large number of families that can show representatives of three or four generations all living.  There are several instances of this sort, within the writer's knowledge, one of the instances being illustrated in the accompanying picture.  The great-grandmother in the group is Mrs. Sabrina Johnson, aged 93, who appears with her daughter, Mrs. Radzell Aldrich, whose son, Mason Aldrich, is the father of the little boy, Master Gilbert Aldrich, aged one year.

Maria Bennett Thayer
Bainbridge Republican, April 16, 1908
Mrs. Maria Bennett Thayer, widow of the late William Thayer of this village, died last Monday morning, April 13, 1908, at her home on Front street aged sixty-five years.  The deceased was a victim to lingering consumption from which she had suffered more or less for seven years.  The past year was one of great excitement to the patient in mind, being at times so happy in the apparent decision that she was on the road to recovery and that there would still be an opportunity to carry out cherished plans for the future, then would follow a relapse of prostration so overwhelming as to convince her that death must come at a not far distant date.  These changing features recurred so often toward the last that Mrs. Thayer was led more and more to think of the uncertainty of human life, and, as the Easter season approached, to anticipate leaving earth and joining the heavenly throng beyond.  Her departure was painless and quiet.  Mrs. Thayer was a most estimable woman, filling her mission on earth, whether in the home circle, among her friends and neighbors, or in the society of her choice, that of the Methodist church.  She had been a member of this church for over forty years and to her it was the joy of her life to assemble among its people, participate in its rites and help to spread its influence.  Though Mrs. Thayer has passed to another world, she has left behind an example of sweetness, purity and religious devotion that her friends will always treasure.  Mrs. Thayer was born in Guilford [Chenango Co., NY] and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Israel Bennett. She was married to William Thayer in 1865, and soon after they came to Bainbridge to live, residing here for the most time since.  Her husband died in the winter of 1906.  Of the immediate family there survives but one daughter, Mrs. Lillian A. Mead, who lived with her parents.  The deceaed left two sisters, Mrs. Czar Prince of Bainbridge and Mrs. George Prouty of Binghamton;  four brothers, E.J. and Hubert L. Bennett of Bainbridge;  Herbert A. Bennett of Plymouth and Riley J. Bennett of Buffalo.  Mrs. E.M. Elwell of Troy, was present at the funeral.  The funeral was held in the M.E. church this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. E.G. VanWoert officiating.  Burial in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY].  Many flowers reposed on the casket expressions of affection from a large number of friends.

Sylvania Bennett Prince
Bainbridge Republican, April 23, 1908
A few weeks since we recorded the death of Czar Prince, a resident of Bainbridge, and to-day we note that of his wife, Sylvania Bennett Prince, who died Friday, April 17, 1908, at her home above the village, aged 63 years.  She had been afflicted for several years with creeping paralysis which gradually sapped her strength and life until she was completely helpless and unable to minister to her husband in his dying hours.  Mrs. Prince knew that death was inevitable, that there was no reprieve from the gradual decay of her physical system, but there was a serenity of mind, a calm acceptance of what the future should bring and a firm reliance upon the Bible teachings of her life.  Thus the pure soul of this sincerely good woman passed into immortality.  The funeral was held at her late home on Monday at 2 o’clock p.m., Rev. G.E. VanWoert of the M.E. church, of which the deceased was a member, officiating.  The burial was in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], the flowers which kind friends had bestowed resting upon the casket.  Mrs. Prince was a native of Guilford [Chenango Co., NY].  She was married to Mr. Prince 35 years ago.  Her home had been for the most part in Bainbridge since that time.  She is survived by three children, Mrs. Anna Roberts of Chenango Forks, Mrs. Grace Ingersoll and George Elliott Prince of Bainbridge.  There remains also a sister, Mrs. George Prouty of Binghamton, another sister, Mrs. William Thayer of Bainbridge, having recently died;  four brohter, Eli J. and Hubert S. Bennett of Bainbridge, Riley Bennett of Buffalo, and Herbert A. Bennett of Plymouth.

Victoria Mae Bennett Proutey
Bainbridge Republican, March 5, 1936
Mrs. Victoria Mae Proutey, 85, passed away at the Bainbridge Hospital, Friday, February 28, where she has been with her daughter, Mrs. Ethel Hodge, for the past ten months.  Her death was caused by heart trouble after having been in poor health for the past two years.  Mrs. Proutey was born in Guilford [Chenango Co., NY], February 10, 1851, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Israel Bennett.  She for many years resided in Binghamton [Broome Co., NY], and later with her brother Riley Bennett in Unadilla.  The funeral was held Sunday, March 1, at Colwell Brothers’ Chapel, with Rev. M.D. Lowen officiating.  Interment was in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY].  Survivers are one brother, Riley Bennett;  a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Hodge, and a son, Earl Proutey, of Binghamton, besides many nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Rev. M.D. Fuller, Pastor of Norwich Broad St M.E. Church - 1910

Rev. M.D. Fuller, D.D.
The New Pastor of the Broad Street M.E. Church, Norwich
Utica Saturday Globe, April 1910

Rev. Dr. M.D. Fuller

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Rev. Dr. M.D. Fuller, who was assigned to the pastorate of the Broad Street M.E. Church at the recent conference in Binghamton, has already made a favorable impression upon the Norwich parishioners, bidding fair to find as warm a place in their hearts as he left among the Pennsylvania Methodists.  Five years ago Dr. Fuller was made presiding elder of the Honesdale district and during that time so endeared himself to all that his departure was deeply regretted not only by people of his own denomination, but all other denominations as well.  A farewell reception was tendered him, his wife and his daughter, Mrs. T.W. Kay, when hundreds of people found opportunity to attend and express regret at their parting and voice the heartiest best wishes for future success and happiness.  Since taking up his work in Norwich Dr. Fuller has preached forceful sermons to large congregations and under his leadership and guidance the members of the Broad Street M.E. Chruch are looking forward to a year of unusual activity and exceptional growth.

Ellen Louisa (Nichols) Robb
Norwich Sun, January 29, 1926
Ellen L. Robb, widow of the late John Robb, died at her home Thursday morning after an illness of about three weeks.  She was born in North Afton [Chenango County, nY], daughter of Samuel G. and Harriet Nichols.  Here she spent her younger days.  Some years after her marriage, the family moved to Norwich during Mr. Robb's term as sheriff, after which they returned to a farm in North Afton.  A few years later they again moved to Norwich making this their home for the past 35 years.  The deceased had not been well for the past two months but did not surrender until failing strength compelled her to do so.  She was always happy and contented in her home, always willing to sacrifice her own strength for the sake of her family's welfare.  She was quiet and uncomplaining, a true, tried, and loving mother, living and exemplifying the life of a Christian mother.  It is in her own home where she will be most sadly missed for where she was, there was home to her immediate family.  Surviving to hold her memory dear and sacred and to sorrowfully  mourn her loss are two daughters, Hattie and Lillie, and four sons, Ira, of Binghamton, John, of Middletown, and Arthur and James of Norwich.  Besides these she leaves one brother, George Nichols of Bainbridge, and several grandchildren and one great grandchild.  The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the family home, 26 Mitchell street, the Rev. Lydia Aylesworth Johnson was born in Chenango county, New York, October 4, 1818.  She was the daughter of Thomas Aylesworth.  Lydia Aylesworth was married to Welcome Johnson in 1838.  Six children were born to them, three daughters and three sons.  They lived in various parts of the state of New York.  In 1865 they moved from Elmira, N.Y. to Washington, D.C.  After some years' residence in that city they moved to Annapolis, Maryland.  They resided there for a few months and then returned to their old [home] at Bainbridge, N.Y., where they stayed three years.  They emigrated to Coming [Corning] Kansas, where Welcome Johnson died in 1894.  From the time of her husband's death Mrs. Johnson made her home with her son and his wife, J.W. and Betsey Johnson, and came to Glendale with them, arriving here Dec. 24, 1906.  She died Dec. 29, 1914, at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 25 days.  For eight years and five days she has been a resident of this city, Glendale, Oregon and valley, and in those years she has wielded a sacred influence over all who have known her.  She was a woman of high and holy Christian character, and was ready at all times to give a reason for the hope she had, and to tell that she had "anchored that hope within the vale."  During the revival meetings in this city two months ago, an afternoon meeting was held in the Johnson home on account that Grandma Johnson was not able to attend at the church.  Besides a number of church members and neighbors there were present Pastor J.K. Howard, Rev. Dr. Knott and Rev. David Oastler.  Grandma Johnson stood up and gave one of the grandest testimonials of her Christian experience ever heard by any of those who were present.  She is gone, but her works of righteousness and her example will live on from shore to shore of America.  In every place she has made her home, her pure life has left an impression for good and for God.

Marvin A. Smith
1844 - 1910

Norwich [Chenango Co., NY]:  Marvin A. Smith died suddenly Wednesday forenoon at his residence on Rexford street, aged 65.  His health had been failing for the past 18 years, and the death of Mrs. Smith which occurred May 15, 1909, was a sad shock to him.  Mr. Smith was born in Guilford [Chenango Co., NY] on October 12, 1844, the son of Rufus and Hannah Lucas Smith.  He had been a resident of Norwich for 30 years.  He learned the cooper's trade which he followed as long as profitable and then turned his attention to carpenter work. At the age of 19 he enlisted in Company G of the Eighth New York Cavalry, and served three years as commissary sergeant, making a creditable record.  he was a member of Smith Post, G.A.R., and stood well among his comrades.  December 16, 1865, Mr. Smith married Miss Delia Furman, of Sherburne, who died last May, There are surviving two daughters, Leah Smith and Mrs. Glen Curtis, and four sons, Louis, Samuel, Fay and Walter, all residents of Norwich, besides three brothers, William, of Geneva, Ill.; John, of McHenry, Ill., and Rufus, of Guilford, and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Fairchild, of Edmeston, and Mrs. P.S. Powers, of Brooklyn.  Funeral services will be held Saturday forenoon at 11, burial taking place at Sherburne [Chenango Co., NY], in charge of the G.A.R.

Sarah Emily (Davis) Aylesworth
Bainbridge Republican, March 1, 1906
Sarah Emily Davis, wife of Emery Aylesworth, of this village [Bainbridge, Chenango Co., NY], died at her home on Front street, Friday afternoon as the sun was setting, aged 61 years.  Mrs. Aylesworth had been in declining health for two years but able to look after her family and the necessary domestic matters until two months ago, when a serious stomach trouble added to the insidious disease, locomotor ataxia, that had gradually been gaining influence over her for years, obliged her to take to her bed.  She lay in an unconscious state from Monday until the Friday she died.  Mrs. Aylesworth enjoyed life and wanted to live but as the weeks wore on she became aware that death was creeping upon her and she made preparations to die.  She calmly gave directions in regard to her funeral, selecting the text to be used which was, “Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man cometh.” Matt 24:44.  She wished her four children, Mrs. Martin Riley, Mrs. H.B. Davenport with husbands and Messrs. Eddy and William Aylesworth to be her pall-bearers.  The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Mr. Odell officiating.  The minister made a beautiful address using the text Mrs. Aylesworth had chosen.  The house was filled with neighbors and friends.  Among the flowers contributed was a beautiful cross from the employees of the D. & H. shops in Oneonta.  The burial was in Green Lawn cemetery [Bainbridge, NY].  Mrs. Aylesworth was born in Greene [Chenango Co., NY] and grew to womanhood there.  She attended the village school, graduated and taught several years prior to her marriage to Mr. Aylesworth, which occurred forty years ago.  Her husband was a prosperous farmer in West Bainbridge, where they resided until coming to Bainbridge twenty-one years ago.  The death of Mrs. Aylesworth has brought great sadness to the home circle.  Her brightness and energy and love will never be forgotten.  Her neighbors will miss her in all the neighborly associations, as well as the M.E. church of which she had been a member for many years.  Besides the husband and four children mentioned, Mrs. Aylesworth is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Yelverton, of West Bainbridge, and two brothers, Charles Davis, of Towanda, Pa., and Hiram Davis, of Corning.
